L. Peipsi is one of the richest fish lakes in Europe. Planktivorous smelt dominates in the fish fauna. The abundance of zooplankton fluctuates between 43 600–2241 500 ind m–3, with the average 974 000 ind m–3, biomass ranges from 0,09–3,69 g m–3, with the average 1,86 g m–3. Since the 1960s the abundance of rotifers has risen considerably while the mean zooplankter weight (B/N) has decreased from 0.005 mg to 0.004 mg. Zooplankton production (herbivores 20.6, predators 1.8, whole zooplankton community 22.4 g C m–2 per period between May and October) can be considered high. Predatory zooplankton eats on an average 50% of the production of herbivorous zooplankton; about 50% of the whole zooplankton production (PFilt + Pred) reaches fishes. The production of herbivorous zooplankton constitutes 10.1% of primary production. This ratio indicates a direct relationship between zoo- and phytoplankton in the food chain; the detrital food chain seems of little importance. About 6% of phytoplankton energy reaches fishes. The transformation of energy in the food web is efficient. On the basis of zooplankton L. Peipsi can be considered a moderately eutrophic or meso-eutrophic lake.  相似文献

A striking reduction in the levels of glucose 1,6-diphosphate and an increase in cyclic GMP were found in muscle from dystrophic mice. Concomitant to these changes, the allosteric activity of phosphofructokinase was found to be markedly reduced. These findings could offer an explanation for the observed reduction in glycolysis in the dystrophic muscle.  相似文献

We assessed long-term impacts of multiple stressors and their interaction on the zooplankton community of the large, eutrophic, cyanobacteria-dominated Lake Peipsi (Estonia, Russia). Stressor dataset consisted in time series (1997–2018) of temperature, nutrients, pH, water transparency, phytoplankton biomass and taxonomic richness. The best predictors were selected with random forests machine-learning algorithms and the subsequent models were constructed with generalized linear modeling. We also aimed to identify graphical thresholds representing non-linear, marked responses of abundance or biomass to stressors. Temperature was the dominant stressor for explaining zooplankton abundance and biomass, followed by cyanobacteria biomass, total nitrogen concentration and water transparency. The effect of water temperature was positive, whereas the effect of cyanobacteria became negative after their biomass exceeded a threshold of?~?2 mg l?1. However, the two stressors together had antagonistic effects on zooplankton, causing a decrease in biomass and abundance. For zooplankton, critical thresholds of total nitrogen (~?700 μg l?1), total phosphorus (~?70 μg l?1), and water transparency (~?1.4 m) after which zooplankton metrics changed drastically, were determined. These findings show that although lake warming alone could be positive for zooplankton, the necessity of reducing interacting stressors that influence harmful cyanobacteria growth and biomass, especially nitrogen loads, must be considered.

Mucosal wound healing in adults has been reported to feature diminished scar formation compared to healing skin wounds. We sought to determine if the expression pattern of chaperonin containing T-complex polypeptide (CCT) subunits in mucosal wounds and fibroblasts is different from that observed in skin wounds and fibroblasts. We found that CCT-beta is the only subunit message to be reduced in wounded mucosa versus unwounded control, and this reduction was confirmed at the protein level. In contrast, mRNA levels of CCT-zeta, -delta, -eta, and -epsilon were significantly increased in mucosal wounds. The increase in CCT-eta was also confirmed at the protein level. Expression levels of CCT-alpha, -beta, -delta; -epsilon, and -theta mRNAs were significantly increased in adult mucosal fibroblasts in culture compared to skin-derived fibroblasts. Western blot analyses confirmed a modest increase in CCT-beta in adult mucosal fibroblasts relative to skin fibroblasts, but CCT-eta protein was unaffected. These differences may contribute to the reported difference in healing outcomes between these two tissue types.  相似文献

The abundance and biomass of ciliates, rotifers, cladocerans and copepods were studied in Lake Peipsi and Lake Võrtsjärv, both of which are shallow, turbid and large. Our hypothesis was that in a large shallow eutrophic lake, the ciliates could be the most important zooplankton group. The mean metazooplankton biomass was higher in Peipsi than in Võrtsjärv (mean values and SD, 1.8 ± 0.7 and 1.3 ± 0.6 mg WM l?1). In Peipsi, the metazooplankton biomass was dominated by filtrators that feed on large-sized phytoplankton and are characteristic of oligo-mesotrophic waters. In Võrtsjärv, the metazooplankton was dominated by species characteristic of eutrophic waters. The planktonic ciliates in both lakes were dominated by oligotrichs. The biomass of ciliates was much greater in Võrtsjärv (mean 2.3 ± 1.4 mg WM l?1) than in Peipsi (0.1 ± 0.08 mg WM l?1). Ciliates formed about 60% of the total zooplankton biomass in Võrtsjärv but only 6% in Peipsi. Thus, the food chains in the two lakes differ: a grazing food chain in Peipsi and a detrital food-chain in Võrtsjärv. Consequently, top-down control of phytoplankton can be assumed to be much more important in Peipsi than in Võrtsjärv. When the detrital food chain prevails, the planktonic ciliates become the most important zooplankton group in shallow, eutrophic and large lake. Neglecting protozooplankton can result in serious underestimates of total zooplankton biomass since two-thirds of the zooplankton biomass in Võrtsjärv comprises ciliates.  相似文献

Neural activity when people solve verbal problems with insight   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
People sometimes solve problems with a unique process called insight, accompanied by an “Aha!” experience. It has long been unclear whether different cognitive and neural processes lead to insight versus noninsight solutions, or if solutions differ only in subsequent subjective feeling. Recent behavioral studies indicate distinct patterns of performance and suggest differential hemispheric involvement for insight and noninsight solutions. Subjects solved verbal problems, and after each correct solution indicated whether they solved with or without insight. We observed two objective neural correlates of insight. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (Experiment 1) revealed increased activity in the right hemisphere anterior superior temporal gyrus for insight relative to noninsight solutions. The same region was active during initial solving efforts. Scalp electroencephalogram recordings (Experiment 2) revealed a sudden burst of high-frequency (gamma-band) neural activity in the same area beginning 0.3 s prior to insight solutions. This right anterior temporal area is associated with making connections across distantly related information during comprehension. Although all problem solving relies on a largely shared cortical network, the sudden flash of insight occurs when solvers engage distinct neural and cognitive processes that allow them to see connections that previously eluded them.  相似文献

Pressure-related deep tissue injury (DTI) is a life-risking form of pressure ulcers threatening immobilized and neurologically impaired patients. In DTI, necrosis of muscle and enveloping adipose tissues occurs under intact skin, owing to prolonged compression by bony prominences. Modeling the process of DTI in the buttocks requires knowledge on viscoelastic mechanical properties of the white adipose tissue covering the gluteus muscles. However, this information is missing in the literature. Our major objectives in this study were therefore to (i) measure short-term (H(S)) and long-term (H(L)) aggregate moduli of adipose tissue covering the glutei of sheep, (ii) determine the effects of preconditioning on H(S) and H(L), and (iii) determine the time course of stress relaxation in terms of the transient aggregate modulus H(t) in nonpreconditioned (NPC) and preconditioned (PC) tissues. We tested 20 fresh tissue specimens (from 20 mature animals) in vitro: 10 specimens in confined compression for obtaining the complete H(t) response to a ramp-and-hold protocol (ramp rate of 300 mms), and 10 other specimens in swift indentations for obtaining comparable short-term elastic moduli at higher ramp rates (2000 mms). We found that H(S) in confined compression were 28.9+/-14.9 kPa and 18.1+/-6.9 kPa for the NPC and PC specimens, respectively. The H(L) property, 10.3+/-4.2 kPa, was not affected by preconditioning. The transient aggregate modulus H(t) always reached the plateau phase (less than 10% difference between H(t) and H(L)) within 2 min, which is substantially shorter than the times for DTI onset reported in previous animal studies. The short-term elastic moduli at high indentation rates were 22.6+/-10 kPa and 15.8+/-9.4 kPa for the NPC and PC test conditions, respectively. Given a Poisson's ratio of 0.495, comparison of short-term elastic moduli between the high and slow rate tests indicated a strong deformation-rate dependency. The most relevant property for modeling adipose tissue as related to DTI is found to be H(L), which is conveniently unaffected by preconditioning. The mechanical characteristics of white adipose tissue provided herein are useful for analytical as well as numerical models of DTI, which are essential for understanding this serious malady.  相似文献
