1. An extensive series of PONAR grabs was used to determine the distribution and abundance of unionid clams in the freshwater tidal Hudson River. 2. The five species of unionids collected were distributed very unevenly within the river. Mean river-wide density and biomass of unionids were 8.0m?2 and 6.2 g DM m?2 (shell-free)., respectively. 3. The environmental variables that we measured (water depth, distance from shore, sediment granulometry and organic content, presence or absence of macrophytes, and the chlorophyll a and particulate organic matter content of the water) explained little of the variation in abundance of unionids. 4. The distributions of the various species of clams did not differ significantly with respect to the environmental variables measured. 5. We estimate that unionids filter a significant amount of water (0.14m3 m?2 day?1, on average) in the Hudson River estuary, roughly equivalent in magnitude to downstream flushing. 6. We project that unionids will serve as a major substratum for the settlement of the zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha), which is now invading the estuary. We emphasize that unionids may play important non-trophic roles in large river ecosystems.  相似文献

Cocoon spinning was analysed, using video recording and playback, in eighteen Nearctic black fly species, comparing nine Simulium species, six Eusimulium species, Stegopterna mutata, Cnephia dacotensis and Prosimulium mixtum. Fourteen behavioural characters were revealed that produced twenty-two equally parsimonious trees (CI = 0.93, RI = 0.96). Another tree was constructed on the basis of five characters relating to the cocoon structure (end-product characters). The goal of the study was to determine whether characters relating to behavioural components of black fly cocoon spinning or those based on end-products of the behaviour are superior for revealing phylogenetic relationships. This was accomplished by comparing both data sets to a phylogeny constructed with the use of cytological and morphological characters. If taxa are grouped according to end-products (the cocoons) there are some spurious groupings. The behavioural analysis only required one extra step to duplicate the morphological and cytological tree. In the case of black flies, it is more informative to use characters resulting from the analysis of the cocoon spinning behaviour than cocoon morphology.  相似文献

Museum specimens, particularly old collections, typically lack comprehensive field data and determination of substrate, sampling biases, etc., is problematic. Diversity at the generic level of all identifiable latest Cretaceous (Campanian–Maastrichtian) echinoderm remains in major museum collections from the Mons (southern Belgium) and Danish (Jylland (Jutland) and Sjælland (Zealand)) basins were compared to those of the Liège-Limburg Basin. The last-named has been studied in detail, including microscopical analysis of ossicles picked from bulk samples. Echinoids of the Mons Basin show similarities to those of the Liège-Limburg Basin, but crinoids, asteroids and ophiuroids remain poorly known from the former. Echinoderms of the Danish Basin resemble those of similar chalk lithofacies in the Liège-Limburg Basin, despite significant geographical separation. These disparities can be explained, at least in part, by collector bias in sampling methodology, although differences in substrate presumably also had an influence.  相似文献

Epidemic attacks of Phytophthora parasitica on papaya fruits developed during wet, windy weather, but declined rapidly when the weather became dry. During rain, abundant sporangia were liberated from the mycelial mats on infected fruits, but none was trapped in dry air. Collar rots and tree collapse caused by root rot occur irrespective of spray treatments and previous aerial infections on the same tree: they are no more prevalent in blocks with abundant aerial infections than in blocks with none. Basal rots occurred earlier and more frequently on plantings near abandoned diseased fields: they were scattered randomly and appeared before aerial infections. It is suggested that new outbreaks might be initiated from seeds of infected fruit, in which chlamydospores have been found, or from infected nursery seedlings. Drosophila spp. were found to be occasional vectors of sporangia. Control of aerial infections was obtained with maneb, basic copper sulphate, captan or difolatan. Spraying only the upper half of the acropetally developing fruit cluster gave much better control than spraying only the lower fruits.  相似文献

The environmental conditions that allow the growth of Barley Mitchell grass, Astrebla pectinata, and the development of the Australian plague locust, Chortoicetes terminifera, are similar. A single fall of more than 20 mm rain and a mean monthly maximum temperature above 23°C ensures sustained growth of Barley Mitchell grass and hatching of eggs of the Australian plague locust. Curly Mitchell grass, Astrebla lappacea, is found in heavier clay soils and requires about 40 mm to respond. Both Mitchell grasses normally remain green for about 2 months after rain which is slightly longer than the duration of locust development to the adult stage. As a result, locusts in Mitchell grass areas can complete their development to migration and laying on a single substantial fall of rain: an adaptation of critical importance in the arid zone where follow-up rain is unlikely. Under similar circumstances, ephemerals like Button grass, Dactyloctenium radulans, are dry in approximately 6 weeks. The locusts are usually at the late nymphal stage by this time and even though Mitchell grass is still quite green, nymphal growth is retarded, resulting in adults which are smaller than normal. These adults are able to accumulate the fat needed for migration by feeding on the dry green Mitchell grasses. In the absence of dry green or green Mitchell grass, the locusts persist locally and die without laying unless there is further rain.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. The pedunculate oak, Quercus robur L., suffers high annual levels of spring defoliation in Wytham Woods, Oxon. The two major defoliators, Tortrix viridana L. and Operophtera brumata L., sometimes reach high enough densities to completely defoliate trees.
2. Experiments with larvae of both species enclosed on oak trees in Wytham Woods suggest considerable potential for intra- and interspecific competition between T. viridana and O. brumata.
3. T. viridana and O. brumata consume equivalent amounts of leaf tissue per unit caterpillar density. Despite this, O. brumata is the superior competitor, measured by mortality during the larval feeding period.
4. Evidence is presented that T. viridana larvae depend upon the protected microclimate of leaf rolls to maintain water balance, and that leaf damage may disrupt the construction of, and microclimate within, leaf rolls. O. brumata may therefore be competitively superior because it indirectly interferes with the water balance of T. viridana.
5. The importance of interspecific competition in the dynamics of T. viridana and O. brumata populations is discussed. Stochastic mortality factors acting on first instar larvae of both species probably make intense competition a rare event.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Studies of inter-specific competition in parasitoids have largely focused on the outcome of within-host competition and the behavioural mechanisms by which female parasitoids prevent competition. Another, less well studied, possibility is oviposition preceded by 'heterospecific ovicide', the destruction of the other species' egg. Heterospecific ovicide essentially eliminates within-host competition.
2. This study investigated the mechanisms and outcome of within-host competition in Encarsia formosa and Encarsia luteola , solitary endoparasitoids of whitefly pests. These species are known to commit ovicide of conspecific eggs.
3. Competition experiments indicated that the offspring of second-ovipositing females had an apparent advantage in competition, regardless of whether the second female was E. formosa or E. luteola .
4. Observations of ovipositor movement through the cuticle of host whitefly nymphs showed that both species often committed heterospecific ovicide and then oviposited or host-fed. Multiparasitism and heterospecific host discrimination were less common and absent respectively.
5. Heterospecific ovicide appears to explain the second-female advantage in competition between these species. Second-female advantage is contrary to the paradigmatic view of multiparasitism, where the first-ovipositing female has an advantage in competition or one of the species consistently prevails in competition.  相似文献

Abstract 1. Anthropogenic increases in nitrogen deposition are impacting terrestrial ecosystems worldwide. While some of the direct ecosystem‐level effects of nitrogen deposition are understood, the effects of nitrogen deposition on plant–insect interactions and on herbivore population dynamics have received less attention. 2. Nitrogen deposition will potentially influence both plant resource availability and herbivore population growth. If increases in herbivore population growth outstrip increases in resource availability, then increases in the strength of density dependence expressed within the herbivore population would be predicted. Alternatively, if plant resources respond more vigorously to nitrogen deposition than do herbivore populations, a decline in the strength of density dependence would be expected. No change in the strength of density dependence acting upon the herbivore population would suggest equivalent responses by herbivores and plants. 3. A density manipulation experiment was performed to examine the effect of nitrogen deposition on the interaction between a host plant, Asclepias tuberosa, and its herbivore, Aphis nerii. Aphid maximum per capita growth rate (Rmax), carrying capacity (K), and the strength of density dependence were measured under three nitrogen deposition treatments. The effect of nitrogen deposition on the relationship among these three measures of insect population dynamics was explored. 4. Simulated nitrogen deposition increased aphid per capita population growth, plant foliar nitrogen concentrations, and plant biomass. Nitrogen deposition caused Rmax and K to increase proportionally, leading to no overall change in the strength of density dependence. In this system, potential changes in the negative feedback processes operating on herbivore populations following nitrogen deposition appear to be buffered by concomitant changes in resource availability.  相似文献
