The application of microsatellites in evolutionary studies requires an
understanding of the patterns governing their evolution in different
species. The finding that homologous microsatellite loci are longer, i.e.,
containing more repeat units, in human and in other primates has been taken
as evidence for directional microsatellite evolution and for a difference
in the rate of evolution between species. However, it has been argued that
this finding is an inevitable consequence of biased selection of
longer-than-average microsatellites in human, because cloning procedures
are adopted to generate polymorphic and, hence, long markers. As a test of
this hypothesis, we conducted a reciprocal comparison of the lengths of
microsatellite loci in cattle and sheep using markers derived from the
bovine genome as well as the ovine genome. In both cases, amplification
products were longer in the focal species, and loci were also more
polymorphic in the species from which they were originally cloned. The
crossing pattern that we found suggests that interspecific length
differences detected at homologous microsatellite loci are the result of
biased selection of loci associated with cloning procedures. Hence,
comparisons of microsatellite evolution between species are flawed unless
they are based on reciprocal analyses or on genuinely random selection of
loci with respect to repeat length.

Quantifying the impact of polyphagous invertebrate predators in controlling cereal aphids and in preventing wheat yield and quality reductions 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Exclusion barriers were used to manipulate numbers of polyphagous invertebrate predators so that their impact on cereal aphids and consequently wheat yield and quality could be examined. Experiments were conducted within the framework of the LINK Integrated Farming Systems Project which allowed comparisons to be made between the integrated and conventional farming systems under examination on a study farm in Hampshire, UK. Only in 1995 were the numbers of aphids per tiller, the aphid peak and rate of increase to the peak significantly greater in the exclusion areas where the density of polyphagous predators had been reduced. The maximum increase in aphids as a result of excluding polyphagous predators was 31%, which was equivalent to 130 aphid days. However, the polyphagous predators did not reduce the number of tillers infested. The relatively low impact of polyphagous predators was attributed to the aphid population phenology and greater effects may have been found had aphids infested the crops earlier in their development. Sowing date was shown to govern the time over which a crop may be susceptible to yield loss from aphids, with later-drilled crops being more susceptible to late-summer aphid infestations. Aphid numbers rarely affected grain yield but were found to be related to some grain quality parameters, but reducing polyphagous predators had no direct impact on grain yield or quality even where the aphid burden increased. The peak period of activity and density differed between the species of Carabidae, Staphylinidae and Araneae consequently influencing their relationship with the aphids. Some negative correlations were found between these groups of polyphagous predators and aphids. Species composition and abundance differed between fields thereby influencing the level of aphid predation. The exclusion barriers were most effective at reducing numbers of Carabidae although numbers of Staphylinidae and Araneae were also reduced. Overwintering polyphagous predator density and composition was compared within a mid‐field overwintering refuge (“beetle bank”) and two conventional hedgebanks over a 5‐year period. During the study predator densities in the beetle bank were similar to or greater than those in the conventional hedgebanks. Whilst predator densities remained relatively stable in both of the hedgebanks over time, densities fluctuated significantly within the beetle bank. Many of the species recorded on the beetle bank are considered to be important predators of cereal aphids. The results are discussed in terms of the implications of creating such a habitat for the biological control of cereal aphids. 相似文献

ABSTRACT Survival is an important parameter for understanding population dynamics of mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) and other large herbivores. To understand long-term dynamics it is important to separate sampling and biological process variation in survival. Moreover, knowledge of correlations in survival across space and between young and adults can provide more informed predictions of survival in unsampled areas. We estimated survival of fawn, yearling, and adult mule deer from 4 spatially separated regions of Colorado, USA, from 1997 to 2008. We also estimated process variance in survival across time for each age and site using Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods. Finally, we estimated correlations in survival among sites and ages with MCMC methods. Average winter fawn survival was 0.721 (SD = 0.024) for the 4 regions. Average winter adult female survival was 0.935 (SD = 0.007). Annual adult female survival ranged from 0.803 (SD = 0.017) to 0.900 (SD = 0.028) for the 4 regions, excluding hunting mortality. The correlation between fawn and adult female survival was high, 0.563 (SD = 0.253). Correlations in winter fawn survival were higher between populations at the same latitude than they were for populations to the north and south. We used survival estimates from our analysis to inform prior distributions for a Bayesian population dynamics model from one population in Colorado and compared that model to one with noninformative prior distributions. Population models including informative prior distributions based on our results performed better than those noninformative prior distributions on survival, providing more biologically defensible results when data were sparse. Knowledge of process distributions of survival can help wildlife managers better predict future population status and understand the likely range of survival rates. 相似文献

ABSTRACT The theory of communication networks offers functional arguments for the evolution of unobtrusive signals in birds. The vulnerability of interacting conspecifics to predation and to eavesdropping by neighbours during both territorial disputes and courtship would select for short range signals such as the quiet songs of birds. In addition to suggesting contexts in which quiet songs should be used, we use our knowledge of the physics of sound transmission to make predictions about the physical structure of such songs relative to the well studied full songs.
