1. Population dynamics of Asphondylia sphaera Monzen (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae), a species that induces fruit galls on Ligustrum japonicum (Oleaceae), was studied from 1970 to 1996 in broad‐leaved evergreen forests in Kagoshima, southern Japan. The numbers of fruit galls and emerging adults fluctuated greatly from year to year along with alternate year flowering of the host plant. 2. To detect density‐dependent and independent forces operating on the A. sphaera population and to assess the relative strength of top‐down and bottom‐up effects, we used the method of Key‐factor/key‐stage analysis, which allowed us to avoid various problems of the conventional key‐factor analysis. 3. Five factors and seven stages were distinguished in the life tables. Key‐factor/key‐stage analysis indicated that the number of flower buds made the largest contribution to the annual changes in total survival rate by operating through the proportion of eggs and first instars that survived abortion of host flower buds and flowers, which contributed most to density‐dependency. 4. The population dynamics of A. sphaera has been strongly influenced by the bottom‐up effects of both the abundance of flower buds and the abortion of flowers of L. japonicum. 5. A top‐down effect of Bracon asphondyliae Maeto (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) was weakly density‐dependent and contributed less to the total survival rate. Abiotic factors, such as summer and winter temperatures and the effect of typhoons were negligible.  相似文献

We conducted an ensemble modeling exercise using the Terrestrial Observation and Prediction System (TOPS) to evaluate sources of uncertainty in carbon flux estimates resulting from structural differences among ecosystem models. The experiment ran public‐domain versions of biome‐bgc, lpj, casa , and tops‐bgc over North America at 8 km resolution and for the period of 1982–2006. We developed the Hierarchical Framework for Diagnosing Ecosystem Models (HFDEM) to separate the simulated biogeochemistry into a cascade of three functional tiers and sequentially examine their characteristics in climate (temperature–precipitation) and other spaces. Analysis of the simulated annual gross primary production (GPP) in the climate domain indicates a general agreement among the models, all showing optimal GPP in regions where the relationship between annual average temperature (T, °C) and annual total precipitation (P, mm) is defined by P=50T+500. However, differences in simulated GPP are identified in magnitudes and distribution patterns. For forests, the GPP gradient along P=50T+500 ranges from ~50 g C yr?1 m?2 °C?1 (casa ) to ~125 g C yr?1 m?2 °C?1 (biome‐bgc ) in cold/temperate regions; for nonforests, the diversity among GPP distributions is even larger. Positive linear relationships are found between annual GPP and annual mean leaf area index (LAI) in all models. For biome‐bgc and lpj , such relationships lead to a positive feedback from LAI growth to GPP enhancement. Different approaches to constrain this feedback lead to different sensitivity of the models to disturbances such as fire, which contribute significantly to the diversity in GPP stated above. The ratios between independently simulated NPP and GPP are close to 50% on average; however, their distribution patterns vary significantly between models, reflecting the difficulties in estimating autotrophic respiration across various climate regimes. Although these results are drawn from our experiments with the tested model versions, the developed methodology has potential for other model exercises.  相似文献

The recovery process of Messor aciculatus (Fr. Smith) harvester ant colonies from habitat disturbance by construction work in an urban park was investigated from 1989 to 1994. Colonies located in 1989 were considered to be survivors of the disturbance, and colonies located for the first time after 1990 were considered to be recruits. The colonies continuously increased in number after the disturbance, and the population size more than doubled just after the disturbance. Analyses of the nest site distribution of colonies in 1989 and 1994 suggest that landform modification destroyed some of them, and that the changed nest site distribution in 1989 affected the distribution in 1994, or, in other words, the disturbance indirectly affected the nest distribution 5 years later. Analyses of the nearest neighbor to each colony suggested that established colonies would obstruct newly recruited colonies around their nests. Construction may open up space for recruitment colonization by removing established colonies, and may also create suitable conditions by destruction of original vegetation, or returning vegetation to the early stages of plant community succession. As a result, the disturbance may facilitate the subsequent recruitment of new colonies and rejuvenate the population.  相似文献

We isolated 12 polymorphic microsatellites from the noxious red‐tide‐causing alga Chattonella ovata. These loci provide a class of highly variable genetic markers, as the number of alleles ranged from four to 12, and the observed and expected heterozygosities ranged from 0.238 to 0.850 and from 0.310 to 0.889, respectively. These loci are useful for revealing the genetic structure of and gene flow among C. ovata populations.  相似文献

Intraspecific encephalization of the lion and the tiger is investigated for the first time using a very large sample. Using cranial volume as a measure of brain size, the tiger has a larger brain relative to greatest length of skull than the lion, the leopard and the jaguar. The Asian lion has a relatively much smaller brain compared with those of sub-Saharan lions, between which there are few differences. The Balinese and Javan tigers had relatively larger brains compared with those of Malayan and Sumatran tigers, even although these four putative subspecies occupy adjacent ranges in south-eastern Asia. Differences in brain size do not appear to correlate with any known differences in behaviour and ecology and, therefore, may reflect only chance differences in intrageneric and intraspecific phylogeny. However, captive-bred big cats generally have a reduced brain size compared with that of wild animals, so that an animal's life history and living conditions may affect brain size and, hence, functional or environmental explanations should be considered when linking brain size differences to intraspecific phylogenies.  © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2009, 98 , 85–93.  相似文献

Of 27 monoclonal antibodies identified to react, by indirect immunofluorescent antibody staining, with specific cells and tissues of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, we report here three monoclonal antibodies pertaining to the gonadal tissues. One antibody defines an antigen that is distributed over the entire embryo at earlier development and later becomes unique to the gonad, including mature oocytes. The antigens recognized by the other two are distributed asymmetrically in the posterior region of the fertilized egg's cytoplasm destined to become the germline precursor cell. Each antigen is successively segregated only to the germline precursor cells of the developing embryo and, postembryonically, is uniquely localized around the germline cell nuclei of the larvae and adults.  相似文献

The proportions in which two eumelanin monomers, namely 5,6-dihydroxyindole-2-carboxylic acid (DHICA) and 5,6-dihydroxyindole (DHI), compose the eumelanin polymer are believed to determine properties of the pigment including its color. These proportions are, however, not well elucidated for naturally occurring eumelanins, largely because of methodological difficulties. In this study we estimate the content of DHICA-derived units in mammalian eumelanins using a combination of two analytical techniques: 1) quantitation of DHICA-derived eumelanin by measuring the yield of pyrrole-2,3,5-tricarboxylic acid (PTCA index) and 2) spectrophotometrical quantitation of total (DHI + DHICA) eumelanin at 350 nm (A350 index). The ratio of PTCA/A350 measured for melanins synthesized from DHI and DHICA mixed in various molar proportions correlates well with the content of DHICA in synthetic polymers. Using this relationship as a standard curve we estimated the proportion of DHICA-derived units in mammalian eumelanins from hair and melanoma cells and found it to be much higher in rodent pigments (58.8%-98.3%; two species, mouse and hamster were examined) as compared to human eumelanins (19.2%-41.8%; one Caucasian and one Oriental individual were examined). No relationship between proportion of DHICA-derived units in eumelanin and hair color is found. The latter seems to be determined predominantly by the ratio of pheo- to eumelanin synthesis.  相似文献

The population structure of variation in a nuclear actin intron and the control region of mitochondrial DNA is described for humpback whales from eight regions in the North Pacific Ocean: central California, Baja Peninsula, nearshore Mexico (Bahia Banderas), offshore Mexico (Socorro Island), southeastern Alaska, central Alaska (Prince Williams Sound), Hawaii and Japan (Ogasawara Islands). Primary mtDNA haplotypes and intron alleles were identified using selected restriction fragment length polymorphisms of target sequences amplified by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR–RFLP). There was little evidence of heterogeneity in the frequencies of mtDNA haplotypes or actin intron alleles due to the year or sex composition of the sample. However, frequencies of four mtDNA haplotypes showed marked regional differences in their distributions (ΦST = 0.277; P < 0.001; n = 205 individuals) while the two alleles showed significant, but less marked, regional differences (ΦST = 0.033; P < 0.013; n = 400 chromosomes). An hierarchical analysis of variance in frequencies of haplotypes and alleles supported the grouping of six regions into a central and eastern stock with further partitioning of variance among regions within stocks for haplotypes but not for alleles. Based on available genetic and demographic evidence, the southeastern Alaska and central California feeding grounds were selected for additional analyses of nuclear differentiation using allelic variation at four microsatellite loci. All four loci showed significant differences in allele frequencies (overall FST = 0.043; P < 0.001; average n = 139 chromosomes per locus), indicating at least partial reproductive isolation between the two regions as well as the segregation of mtDNA lineages. Although the two feeding grounds were not panmictic for nuclear or mitochondrial loci, estimates of long-term migration rates suggested that male-mediated gene flow was several-fold greater than female gene flow. These results include and extend the range and sample size of previously published work, providing additional evidence for the significance of genetic management units within oceanic populations of humpback whales.  相似文献

The effects of whey proteins from bovine milk on melanogenesis in cultured human melanocytes were examined. Among the major protein components of milk whey including β-lactoglobulin (BLG), α-lactalbumin, serum albumin, and IgG, only BLG exhibited the depigmenting effect at a concentration of 1 mg/ml. Also, BLG suppressed the activity of tyrosinase in these cells. Retinol, to which BLG is known to bind, slightly increased the pigmentation of the cells at concentrations in the range of 1–100 nM, and retinoic acid, a metabolite of retinol, exhibited a strong pigmentation-promoting effect within the same concentration range. Treatment of the cells with 1 mg/ml BLG completely abrogated the pigmentation induced by these A vitamins. These results demonstrate a novel biological activity of BLG and suggest that this activity is dependent on its ability to bind retinol.  相似文献

Middle Eocene–early Oligocene ostracode faunal changes in northwestern Kyushu of southwestern Japan are identified in this study. Ostracodes occur from shelf deposits of five formations: the middle Eocene Okinoshima, the upper Eocene Funazu, the uppermost Eocene–lowermost Oligocene Kishima, the lowermost Oligocene Itanoura, and the lower Oligocene Waita Formations. The middle Eocene–earliest Oligocene ostracodes were characterized by warm-water genera, indicating tropical, subtropical and Tethyan genera, whereas the late early Oligocene ostracodes do not include warm-water taxa, consisting of temperate realm genera. The middle Eocene–earliest Oligocene ostracodes do not include remarkable changes of species composition, in contract with equatorial Pacific radiolarians and West Coast USA molluscs. Ostracodes suggest that distinct climatic cooling did not occur in the southwestern Japan during the middle Eocene–earliest Oligocene.  相似文献
