Cicer L. (Leguminosae: Papilionoideae) consists of 42 species of herbaceous or semi-shrubby annuals and perennials distributed throughout the temperate zones of the Northern Hemisphere. The origin and geographical relationships of the genus are poorly understood. We studied the geographical diversification and phylogenetic relationships of Cicer using DNA sequence data sampled from two plastid regions, trnK / matK and trnS - trnG , and two nuclear regions, the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and external transcribed spacer (ETS) regions of nuclear ribosomal DNA, from 30 species. The results from the phylogenetic analyses of combined nuclear and chloroplast sequence data revealed four well-supported geographical groups: a Middle Eastern group, a West-Central Asian group, an Aegean–Mediterranean group, and an African group. Age estimates for Cicer based on methods that do not assume a molecular clock (for example, penalized likelihood) demonstrate that the genus has a Mediterranean origin with considerable diversification in the Miocene/Pliocene epochs. Geological events, such as mountain orogenesis and environmental changes, are major factors for the dispersal of Cicer species. The early divergence of African species and their geographically distinct region in the genus suggest a broader distribution pattern of the genus in the past than at present.  © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2007, 154 , 175–186.  相似文献

RECOMBINATION-deficient (Rec?) mutants of E. coli express pleiotropic alterations of various phenotypes such as increased ultraviolet light sensitivity, altered patterns of DNA degradation after irradiation, inability to support growth of certain λ phage mutants and many others in addition to reduced recipient ability in mating with Hfr bacteria1. Yet the primary function of any one of the genes responsible for these alterations has not been elucidated. In this paper, the characteristics of recB and recC mutants having temperature-sensitive functions are described. Particular attention is paid to the properties of the ATP-dependent deoxyribonuclease which is known to be missing in recB and recC mutants2–5.  相似文献

We conducted an ensemble modeling exercise using the Terrestrial Observation and Prediction System (TOPS) to evaluate sources of uncertainty in carbon flux estimates resulting from structural differences among ecosystem models. The experiment ran public‐domain versions of biome‐bgc, lpj, casa , and tops‐bgc over North America at 8 km resolution and for the period of 1982–2006. We developed the Hierarchical Framework for Diagnosing Ecosystem Models (HFDEM) to separate the simulated biogeochemistry into a cascade of three functional tiers and sequentially examine their characteristics in climate (temperature–precipitation) and other spaces. Analysis of the simulated annual gross primary production (GPP) in the climate domain indicates a general agreement among the models, all showing optimal GPP in regions where the relationship between annual average temperature (T, °C) and annual total precipitation (P, mm) is defined by P=50T+500. However, differences in simulated GPP are identified in magnitudes and distribution patterns. For forests, the GPP gradient along P=50T+500 ranges from ~50 g C yr?1 m?2 °C?1 (casa ) to ~125 g C yr?1 m?2 °C?1 (biome‐bgc ) in cold/temperate regions; for nonforests, the diversity among GPP distributions is even larger. Positive linear relationships are found between annual GPP and annual mean leaf area index (LAI) in all models. For biome‐bgc and lpj , such relationships lead to a positive feedback from LAI growth to GPP enhancement. Different approaches to constrain this feedback lead to different sensitivity of the models to disturbances such as fire, which contribute significantly to the diversity in GPP stated above. The ratios between independently simulated NPP and GPP are close to 50% on average; however, their distribution patterns vary significantly between models, reflecting the difficulties in estimating autotrophic respiration across various climate regimes. Although these results are drawn from our experiments with the tested model versions, the developed methodology has potential for other model exercises.  相似文献

The proportions in which two eumelanin monomers, namely 5,6-dihydroxyindole-2-carboxylic acid (DHICA) and 5,6-dihydroxyindole (DHI), compose the eumelanin polymer are believed to determine properties of the pigment including its color. These proportions are, however, not well elucidated for naturally occurring eumelanins, largely because of methodological difficulties. In this study we estimate the content of DHICA-derived units in mammalian eumelanins using a combination of two analytical techniques: 1) quantitation of DHICA-derived eumelanin by measuring the yield of pyrrole-2,3,5-tricarboxylic acid (PTCA index) and 2) spectrophotometrical quantitation of total (DHI + DHICA) eumelanin at 350 nm (A350 index). The ratio of PTCA/A350 measured for melanins synthesized from DHI and DHICA mixed in various molar proportions correlates well with the content of DHICA in synthetic polymers. Using this relationship as a standard curve we estimated the proportion of DHICA-derived units in mammalian eumelanins from hair and melanoma cells and found it to be much higher in rodent pigments (58.8%-98.3%; two species, mouse and hamster were examined) as compared to human eumelanins (19.2%-41.8%; one Caucasian and one Oriental individual were examined). No relationship between proportion of DHICA-derived units in eumelanin and hair color is found. The latter seems to be determined predominantly by the ratio of pheo- to eumelanin synthesis.  相似文献

A field experiment was conducted with a non-irrigated waterstress treatment and an irrigated control using four sorghum(Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) cultivars. We investigated the effectsof water deficits on leaf water relations, osmotic adjustment,stomatal conductance, cuticular conductance, cell membrane stability(CMS) measured by the polyethylene glycol (PEG) test, epicuticularwax load (EWL), cytoplasmic lipid content, solute concentrationin cell sap, and growth. Osmotic adjustment was observed under water deficit conditions.Lower osmotic potential enabled plants to maintain turgor anddecreased the sensitivity of turgor-dependent processes. Sugarand K were identified as the major solutes contributing to osmoticpotential in sorghum. Sugar and K concentrations in cell sapincreased by 37·4% and 27%, respectively, under waterdeficit conditions in favour of decreasing osmotic potential.Stomatal conductance and cuticular conductance were lower inthe non-irrigated plants. A wide range in CMS among four cultivarswas observed. CMS increased with increasing water deficits.EWL increased on leaves of water deficient plants and was positivelycorrelated with cuticular conductance and CMS. Membrane phospholipidcontent increased in water-stressed plants. CMS as measured by the PEG test, was influenced by EWL, cuticularthickness, and osmotic concentration of leaf tissues. The cultivarswhich maintained higher CMS, higher EWL, lower cuticular conductance,higher turgor and higher osmotic adjustment under water deficitconditions were identified as drought tolerant. The effects of whey proteins from bovine milk on melanogenesis in cultured human melanocytes were examined. Among the major protein components of milk whey including β-lactoglobulin (BLG), α-lactalbumin, serum albumin, and IgG, only BLG exhibited the depigmenting effect at a concentration of 1 mg/ml. Also, BLG suppressed the activity of tyrosinase in these cells. Retinol, to which BLG is known to bind, slightly increased the pigmentation of the cells at concentrations in the range of 1–100 nM, and retinoic acid, a metabolite of retinol, exhibited a strong pigmentation-promoting effect within the same concentration range. Treatment of the cells with 1 mg/ml BLG completely abrogated the pigmentation induced by these A vitamins. These results demonstrate a novel biological activity of BLG and suggest that this activity is dependent on its ability to bind retinol.  相似文献

The projected increase of atmospheric CO2 concentration ([CO2]) is expected to increase rice yield, but little is known of the effects of [CO2] at low temperature, which is the major constraint to growing rice in cool climates. We grew rice under two levels of [CO2] (ambient and elevated by 200 μmol mol?1) and two nitrogen (N) fertilization regimes in northern Japan in 2003 (cool weather) and 2004 (warm weather) in the field in a free‐air CO2 enrichment (FACE) system. Elevated [CO2] significantly increased grain yield in both years in both N regimes, but the magnitude of the increase differed between years: 6% in 2003 vs. 17% in 2004, with a significant interaction between [CO2] and year. This difference resulted from responses of spikelet number and ripening percentage to elevated [CO2]. Enhancement of dry matter production and N uptake at heading by elevated [CO2] was smaller in 2003 than in 2004, although at maturity there was no difference between years. No significant interaction between N regime and [CO2] was detected in yield and yield components. The results suggest that yield gain due to elevated [CO2] can be reduced by low temperature.  相似文献
