Populations of the crustose red alga Lithophyllum incrustans were analysed for their age structure and reproductive characteristics. Two different types of age structure were observed, and shown to be associated with different surface area to volume ratios of the rock pools from which the populations were sampled. Geographic clines and surface area to volume ratios of the pools influenced the reproductive effort and the proportion of sexual plants in the populations. The relationship between temperature, salinity, surface area to volume ratio of the pools and the life history of the alga is discussed.  相似文献

Increasing the concentration of CO2 in the air from the usual300 ppm to 1, 000 ppm in growth rooms with temperatures of 20°C during the 16-h light period and 15° C during the 8-hdark period increased the total dry weight of sugar-beet, barley,and kale by about 5o per cent. A further increase in CO, concentrationto 3, 300 ppm increased dry weight slightly more. These effectsoccurred with light intensities ranging from 3.7 to II.6 caldm–2 min–1 of visible radiation supplied by a mixtureof fluorescent and tungsten lamps, and were only slightly greaterwith the brighter light. Extra CO2 also increased leaf area,though relatively less than dry weight, and the number of barleyshoots but not of sugar-beet or kale leaves; it decreased leaf-arearatio, specific leaf area, and the ratio of tops to roots. Maizewas taller with extra CO2. Net assimilation rates in 1, 000 and 3, 300 ppm CO2 were about20 and 30 per cent respectively greater than in 300 ppm. Uptakeof CO2 in the light by complete tops and single leaves alsoincreased with increase in CO2 concentration. Photosynthesisof leaves of plants recently transferred to a new CO2 concentrationdepended only on that concentration and not on the originalone. Doubling the light intensity from 3.7 to 7.7 cal dm–2min–1 affected dry weight, leaf area, net assimilationrate, etc., similarly to a tenfold increase in CO2 concentration.  相似文献

1. In temperate climates, dung is often colonised by several species of endocoprid (dwelling) dung beetles which use pats for feeding, shelter, and reproduction. 2. Endocoprid beetles aggregate even when offered patches (dung pats) of consistent age, size, and origin, suggesting that beetles themselves might influence the attractiveness of patches to members of their own species. Both pheromones, and physical changes to the structure of dung pats caused by colonising beetles have been suggested as mechanisms facilitating intraspecific aggregation, but neither of these hypotheses have been empirically tested. 3. Using a common European dung beetle (Aphodius fossor L.), we conducted a simple choice experiment designed to test whether (i) earlier colonisation by conspecifics could alter dung attractiveness and (ii) whether attraction was influenced by sex‐specific signals. 4. We found that female beetles are repelled by dung colonised by conspecific females and are attracted to dung colonised by conspecific males. Male beetles show no evidence of attraction or repellence for dung colonised by either sex. Neither in females nor males was uncolonised dung found to be significantly more or less attractive than predicted by non‐preference. 5. Our results suggest that for A. fossor male‐produced signals may support mate finding in patchy environments, and that female‐produced signals may serve to discourage subsequent colonisation by additional females.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. The main stream and tributaries of a 145 km reach of the Moisie River, Quebec, were examined for temperature, conductivity, pH, dissolved organic carbon (DOC),%DOC>100,000 nominal molecular weight (NMW), optical density (OD350), and the ratio of OD400 to OD600 (E4:E6).
2. Dissolved organic carbon concentrations correlated closely with OD350 ( r 2=0.92, P <0.001). However,%DOC>100,000 NMW did not correlate with the E4:E6 ratio.
3. Except for a slight increase in%DOC> 100,000 NMW ( r 2=0.37, P <0.05), no change in any characteristic occurred down the length of the Moisie River, despite consistently higher levels of DOC in the tributaries.
4. Results suggest that high concentrations of DOC in tributary waters are rapidly removed within the main river channel. These results are discussed in terms of both biotic and abiotic models of in-strcam processing.  相似文献

The medium and large ground finches of the Galapagos archipelago Geospiza fortis and G. magnirostris are distinguished by their different body size and bill dimensions on most of the islands where they both occur. On the island of Indefatigable this distinction is not complete and a group of birds with intermediate bill dimensions is present. The origin of this group could be explained by sympatric divergence of G. fortis or by hybridization, between this species and G. magnirostris . Although the conditions for sympatric divergence are severe it seems likely that strong disruptive selection for different optimal bill sizes may be operating on G. fortis , due to the presence of several ecological niches, separate categories of size and hardness of seeds the birds eat. It is suggested that islands in the Galapagos archipelago, and perhaps other oceanic islands, may provide conditions extremely conducive to sympatric divergence, or even sympatric speciation.  相似文献

Rates of net photosynthesis of the flag leaves of 15 genotypesof wheat and related species were measured throughout theirlife, using intact leaves on plants grown in the field. At thestage when rates were maximal, they were in general highestfor the diploid species, intermediate for the tetraploidspeciesand lowest for Triticum aestivum (means of 38, 32 and 28 mgCO2 dm–2 h–1 respectively). Rates were stronglynegatively correlated with leaf area, leaf width and the meanplan area per mesophyll cell and positvely correlated with stomatalfrequency and number of veins per mm of leaf width. The differencesamong species in these attributes were mainly related to ploidylevel. It was not possible to determine the relative importanceof each anatomical feature, though the changes in stomatal frequencyhad only slight effects on stomatal conductance and the observeddifferences in rates of photosynthesis were much greater thanwould be expected from those in stomatal conductance alone. There was genetic variation in rates of light dependent oxygenevolution of isolated protoplasts and intact chloroplasts butno difference attributable to ploidy. The mean rate, 91 µmolO2 mg–1 chlorophyll h–1, equivalent to 3.9 mg CO2mg-1chlorophyll h-1 was considerably less than the rate of photosynthesisin comparable intact leaves, which was 7.2 mg CO2 mg–1chlorophyll h–1. The total above-ground dry matter yields were least for thewild diploids T. urartu and T. thauodar and the wild tetraploidT. dicoccoides, but the other wild diploids produced as muchdry matter as the hexaploids. The prospects of exploiting differences in photosynthetic ratein the breeding of higher yielding varieties are discussed. Feeding by honeyeaters was found to maintain nectar at low levels at three sites studied on Kangaroo Island in May-June 1978. The productivity of nectar at a site and position in a dominance hierarchy appeared to determine which bird species used each site. Correa was the main nectar source in the poorest area and produced 0.05 kJ m?2 per day. The small eastern spinebill was the most abundant honeyeater. The purple-gaped honeyeater also occurred but fed mostly on honeydew. The medium sized New Holland honeyeater was common and territorial in the second area, where Banksia marginata and B. ornata inflorescences and Adenanthos flowers produced 0.7 kJ m?2 of nectar per day. Spinebills and crescent honeyeaters also visited flowers and were sometimes chased by New Holland honeyeaters. The richest site was a flowering Eucalyptus cosmophylla tree (5.1 kJ m?2 of nectar per day). A red wattlebird, the largest honeyeater, held a territory in part of this tree and chased other honeyeaters from the territory. New Holland, crescent and purple-gaped honeyeaters fed on flowers in other parts of the tree. The spinebill was absent. We conclude that nectar was partitioned along a spectrum of rich to poor sources. Larger more aggressive species used and sometimes defended the richest sources while the smaller birds used the poorer sources.  相似文献
