Evidence for the occurrence of conspecific nest parasitism (CNP) in Pied Avocets Recurvirostra avosetta is presented. Clutches of more than four eggs had obviously been produced by more than one female but were incubated by only one pair each. Minimum estimates for the frequencies of parasitized clutches and parasitic eggs were 3.3% and 1.3% respectively. CNP increased in frequency in colonies with higher nest densities. The frequency of CNP was unaffected by the rate of nest failures early in the season. On average, parasitic eggs were laid earlier in the season than the majority of non-parasitic eggs. Parasitic Avocets usually deposited their eggs during the laying period of host nests. Parasitized nests had significantly longer incubation periods than unparasitized nests. Hatching success in supernormal clutches was insignificantly reduced compared with four-egg clutches. The annual breeding success of individuals with parasitized clutches was considerably (but not significantly) higher than those of non-parasitized individuals. This was probably due to the fact that parasites chose to deposit their eggs in dense colonies whose members had significantly higher breeding success than the individuals in loose colonies. In colonies with a high rate of CNP, the frequency of clutches of more than five eggs increased. These clutches had little chance of survival.  相似文献

The reproductive status of female otters ( Lutra lutra ) was determined from an examination of 518 carcasses collected from Eastern Germany between 1950 and 2001. In Germany otters mate throughout the year. Significant seasonal differences are evident with a distinct peak in summer. Females were in breeding condition between the ages of three and 15 years, with the majority between six and nine years. The mean litter size at birth was 2.36, which was the lowest when compared with other inland populations. There were no significant differences in litter size for regions, seasons or age. Prenatal losses account for 26.31%. The mortality between birth and first appearance of cubs following their mother is about 29%. An effective reproduction rate of 78.4% was deduced from the known age structure of the sample and the proportion of breeding females. Reproductively active females show a significantly higher body condition than non-reproductive females. Behavioral patterns of inter-crab communications as shown inagonistic and sexual interactions are investigated in 26 generawithin 9 aquatic and semi-terrestrial families of brachyurans.The investigation includes a review of literature and the author'sobservations. Species of the aquatic families, Dromiidae, Leucosiidae, Majidae,Parthenopidae, Cancridae, Portunidae, and Xanthidae, displayagonistic activities mostly with more or less extended chelipeds.An encounter leads often to physical interactions, such as strikingblows or grasping with chelae. Many of the semi-terrestrialocypodids and grapsids, however, display with flexed chelipeds,showing the opponent the outer side of the chelae in a shield-likemanner. Encounters usually follow a formalized set of patternsand only occasionally do they lead into a "wild fight". Concerning sexual activities in many aquatic forms, a male catchesand holds or cages a female between its legs for several daysduring the mating period. In many semi-terrestrial grapsidsand ocypodids, patterns of up-down display of chelipeds havebeen observed during agonistic encounters, as well as duringinitial stages of mating. In other forms a special display ofchelipeds occurs in courtship. In agonistic and sexual activities of aquatic forms intern-crabcommunication seems to depend mainly on tactile and possiblychemical stimuli. In the semi-terrestrial forms that have beeninvestigated, mechanisms of communication are based predominantlyon optical information.  相似文献

High resolution palynological and geochemical data of sediment core GeoB 3910‐2 (located offshore Northeast Brazil) spanning the period between 19 600 and 14 500 calibrated year bp (19.6–14.5 ka) show a land‐cover change in the catchment area of local rivers in two steps related to changes in precipitation associated with Heinrich Event 1 (H1 stadial). At the end of the last glacial maximum, the landscape in semi‐arid Northeast Brazil was dominated by a very dry type of caatinga vegetation, mainly composed of grasslands with some herbs and shrubs. After 18 ka, considerably more humid conditions are suggested by changes in the vegetation and by Corg and C/N data indicative of fluvial erosion. The caatinga became wetter and along lakes and rivers, sedges and gallery forest expanded. The most humid period was recorded between 16.5 and 15 ka, when humid gallery (and floodplain) forest and even small patches of mountainous Atlantic rain forest occurred together with dry forest, the latter being considered as a rather lush type of caatinga vegetation. During this humid phase erosion decreased as less lithogenic material and more organic terrestrial material were deposited on the continental slope of northern Brazil. After 15 ka arid conditions returned. During the humid second phase of the H1 stadial, a rich variety of landscapes existed in Northeast Brazil and during the drier periods small pockets of forest could probably survive in favorable spots, which would have increased the resilience of the forest to climate change.  相似文献

The possibility of carbon (C) being locked away from the atmosphere for millennia is given in hydromorphic soils. However, the water-table-dependent feedback from soil organic matter (SOM) decomposition to the climate system is less clear. At least three greenhouse gases are produced: carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O). These gases show emission peaks at different water table positions and have different global warming potentials (GWP), for example a factor of 23 for CH4 and 296 for N2O as compared with the equivalent mass of CO2 on a 100-year time horizon. This review of available annual data on all three gases revealed that the radiative forcing effect of SOM decomposition is principally dictated by CO2 despite its low GWP. Anaerobic SOM decomposition generally has a lower potential feedback to the climatic system than aerobic SOM decomposition. Concrete values are constrained by a lack of data from tropical and subarctic regions. Furthermore, data on N2O and on plant effects are generally rare. However, there is a clear latitudinal differentiation for the GWP of soils under anaerobic conditions compared with aerobic conditions when looking at CO2 and CH4: in the tropical and temperate regions, the anaerobic GWP showed a range of 25–60% of the aerobic value, but values varied between 80% and 110% in the boreal zone. Hence, particularly in the vulnerable boreal zone, the feedback from ecosystems to climate change will highly depend on plant responses to changing water tables at elevated temperatures.  相似文献

A diverse group of Ludlovian Monograptus species is characterized by the retarded growth of thecal hoods, either proximally [ M. colonus (Barrande), M. chimaera (Barrande) and M. haupti Kühne] or throughout the rhabdosome [M. micropoma (Jaekel)]. In all these species the hoods are secondary structures, i.e. later growth additions to the thecae. By contrast, in the Devonian Monograptus species the thecal hoods are primary structures, i.e. the outward extension of the dorsal thecal wall. and are formed by undelayed growth that typically is completed before growth of the succeeding theca begins. It is among Ludlovian ( M. uncinatus Tullberg) and Pridolian ( M. simih Přibyl) forms with homologous hoods that the roots of the majority of the Devonian Monograptus species might be found. The Ludlovian M. micropoma and M. haupti should not be affiliated to the group of Monograptus vomerinus (Nicholson), which is highly characteristic of, and restricted to, the late Llandovery and Wenlock graptolite faunas.  相似文献
