Leaves of eucalyptus ( Eucalyptus urophylla ) were infiltrated with a cell suspension of the incompatible pathogen Acidovorax avenae pv. avenae and showed a typical hypersensitive response within 24h. Necrotic leaf areas were excised, vacuum infiltrated with 40% ethanol and left under continuous agitation at room temperature for 24h. The diffusate was concentrated, partitioned with ethyl-acetate, concentrated to dryness and resuspended in a small volume of methanol. The biological activity of extracts was evaluated by an agar diffusion method against noncompatible bacteria ( A. avenae pv. avenae and Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. manihotis ) and fungi ( Penicillium sp. and Aspergillus sp. ). Inhibition haloes, when present, were always larger in extracts from leaves infiltrated with the incompatible bacterium than the water control. Thin layer chromatography resolution of crude extracts from leaves infiltrated with both incompatible pathogen cell suspension and water, followed by bioautography with Thieleviopsis paradoxa, consistently rendered, in both situations, a large, diffuse inhibition halo near the origin, assumed to be due to preformed antimicrobial substances. However, extracts from leaves infiltrated with the living cells of the incompatible pathogen gave rise to a smaller, second inhibition halo, near the front, that was interpreted as being one or several phytoalexins.  相似文献

1. The longitudinal effects of herbivory on stream periphyton assemblages were examined in laboratory stream channels, each of which consisted of an upstream chamber, which either contained snail grazers or not, and downstream chambers, none of which contained grazers. Periphyton assemblages of two ages (0–21 days old and 21–42 days old) were sampled in both upstream and downstream chambers to detect proximate (i.e. localized) and longitudinal (i.e. downstream) effects of herbivory. 2. Both proximate and longitudinal effects were detected, although they differed in their impact on the periphyton assemblage. Periphyton biomass and cell accumulation were lower in grazed than in ungrazed upstream chambers throughout the experimental period. Accumulation rates on initially bare tiles were substantially higher downstream of grazed than of ungrazed chambers, but grazing had no effect on cell densities in established (21–42 day old) assemblages downstream. 3. Longitudinal effects of herbivory were not due to quantitative differences in the flux of propagules or nutrients from grazed and ungrazed chambers. Although not tested in this study, it is hypothesized that differences in the physiological condition of exported propagules may have contributed to differences in downstream colonization rates in grazed and ungrazed streams. 4. The magnitude of longitudinal impacts of herbivory and the importance of different causal mechanisms are predicted to vary depending on the standing crop and productive capacity of the periphyton assemblages as well as the consumptive demand of the herbivore guild.  相似文献

  • 1 We examined the potential selective pressures exerted by different types of predators on morphological prey defences using the case-building larvae of the limnephilid caddisfly, Limnephilus frijole. The predators were a predaceous minnow, Gila pandora, and an aeschnid dragonfly naiad, Oplonaeschna armata.
  • 2 The influence of larval case design on vulnerability to predators was evaluated in a series of laboratory experiments. Larval L. frijole were collected from a stream without fish or dragonflies. In the laboratory, larvae still occupying their field-built cases were exposed to the two predators, with which L. frijole co-occurs in other streams. Following 24 h exposure of caddisfly larvae to a specific predator, the pre-trial case length, case strength, case width, and case composition of victims and survivors were compared.
  • 3 Principal components analysis (PCA) indicated substantial independent variation for all four case parameters in the study population. The cases of larvae surviving exposure to either dragonfly naiads or fish were significantly stronger and wider than cases of victims of predation. Cases of survivors were also longer and had a greater mineral fraction than those of victims, but differences were either marginally significant or not significant.
  • 4 These results demonstrate that specific aspects of case design affect the vulnerability of caddisfly larvae. In addition, predaceous fish and predaceous invertebrates, using different predation techniques, may exert similar selective pressures on these defenses. Case aspects influencing vulnerability in these experiments are broadly consistent with natural variation in case design associated with predator-rich and predator-free habitats for related caddisfly species.

The regulation and nitrate inhibition of nodule formation insoybean, Glycine max (L.) Merr., was further examined usingthe nodulation mutants of cv. Enrei. The non-nodulating mutantsEn115, Enl282, and En1314 produced extremely few markedly-curledroot hairs which were all devoid of infection threads, and invariablyfailed to initiate sub-epidermal cell divisions (SCDs) in theroot cortex. A considerable number of arrested SCDs was foundbefore nodule emergence in Enrei, but not in En6500 which hadsignificantly more SCDs that progressively increased at moreadvanced stages of nodule ontogeny. These observations indicatethat autoregulation acts by blocking the developmental stagebefore nodule emergence. In both Enrei and En65OO, the maturationof emerged nodules was restricted by a late-acting nodulationcontrol mechanism that is apparently unrelated to autoregulation.Reciprocal wedge-grafts of plants inoculated at sowing showedthat the control of the supernodulating phenotype resides inthe shoot, while the non-nodulating phenotype is strictly root-controlled.The nodulation phenotype of the current non-nodulating mutantsresults not from an alteration of the autoregulatory mechanism,but from mutation that exerts a root-localized effect that blocksSCDs which trigger the autoregulatory mechanism. Reciprocalgrafting experiments on Enrei and En6500 seedlings grown undervarious nitrate levels suggest that nitrate inhibition of nodulation,like autoregulation, is shoot-controlled. Since these two processesare invariably expressed together, they are probably causallyrelated, acting synergistically to regulate nodule formationin soybean. These results indicate that the regulation and nitrateinhibition of nodulation in the nodulation mutants of cv. Enreiare similar to those of cv. Bragg nodulation mutants. SYNOPSIS. For reef fish in temperate marine regions, such componentsof local assemblage diversity (i.e., within a reef) as speciesrichness, total fish density, and rank order of abundance canremain relatively constantthrough time. Long-term data (17 years)for assemblages on 2 reefs in Southern California revealed that,despite high turnover in rare species, overall species richnesswas affected only moderately by major oceanographicdisturbances.This resilience of the assemblage is in marked contrast to hightemporal variation in densities exhibited by many local populationsof individual species, and it suggests that measurements ofdiversity to indicate status of an assemblage should be usedwith caution. Here we consider various processes and factors,together with the spatial and temporal scales over which theyoperate, that can influence local diversity (and its estimation)of reef fishes. Mechanisms that can "buffer" local diversityof reef fishes include dispersal of young that inter-connectssubpopulations, high "inertia" in relative abundance and populationstructures (especially for long-lived species), and broad ecologicalrequirements of many species. These considerations suggest thatthe effect of disturbances on local diversity of reef fisheswill depend in part on the magnitude, duration, frequency andspatial scale of the perturbation. While long-term data arefew, available information suggests that, due to life historycharacteristics of the fish and the spatial and temporal scalesat which disturbances are likely to occur, assemblages of temperatemarine reef fish might be relatively resilient to environmentalperturbations  相似文献

Holocene lingulid brachiopods are well-known burrowing organisms. Fossil lingulid burrows have been reported from rocks in Europe and North America that range from Ordovician and Devonian through Pennsylvanian. However, the latest authoritative compendium on trace fossils, The Treatise on Invertebrate Paleontology (1975). makes no mention of lingulid burrows. The obvious reason for this omission is that the burrows, although important paleontologically and ichnologically, have never been named formally thereby making it awkward to include them in faunal lists. The monotypic genus Lingulichnites is proposed to remedy this problem. The type specimens are from Upper Devonian rocks in northeastern Ohio.  相似文献

The relative abundance of suspension- and deposit-feeding organisms in fossil communities has been used to interpret water turbulence in ancient environments. Trophic analysis of modern molluscan communities of San Francisco Bay and of Pliocene macroinvertebrate communities of the Kettleman Hills, California, suggests that the method is only partly valid for inshore environments, which may be more complex than those previously studied. Factors other than water turbulence must explain some differences in trophic proportions. Epifaunal communities consist largely of suspension-feeding organisms regardless of other environmental factors, and relict sediments or sediments out of equilibrium with the normal hydrologic conditions in the area may lead to erroneous interpretations. Analysis of the total benthic macroinvertebrate communities of the southern California shelf indicates that the trophic proportions of the potentially fossilizable part of each community are not the same as the total community and is not always diagnostic of the environment.  相似文献

Secretory granules containing a hybrid protein consisting of the regulated secretory protein tissue plasminogen activator and an enhanced form of green fluorescent protein were tracked at high spatial resolution in growth cones of differentiated PC12 cells. Tracking shows that granules, unlike synaptic vesicles, generally are mobile in growth cones. Quantitative analysis of trajectories generated by granules revealed two dominant modes of motion: diffusive and directed. Diffusive motion was observed primarily in central and peripheral parts of growth cones, where most granules diffused two to four orders of magnitude more slowly than comparably sized spheres in dilute solution. Directed motion was observed primarily in proximal parts of growth cones, where a subset of granules underwent rapid, directed motion at average speeds comparable to those observed for granules in neurites. This high-resolution view of the dynamics of secretory granules in growth cones provides insight into granule organization and release at nerve terminals. In particular, the mobility of granules suggests that granules, unlike synaptic vesicles, are not tethered stably to cytoskeletal structures in nerve terminals. Moreover, the slow diffusive nature of this mobility suggests that secretory responses involving centrally distributed granules in growth cones will occur slowly, on a time scale of minutes or longer.  相似文献

In attempting to analyze the precolonial Moroccan Rif in terms of the segmentary lineage model, David Hart overlooked the fact that violence in this region typically involved brothers and the sons of brothers in competition for inherited land, which was a commodity controlled by individuals, not lineages. What Hart depicted as a segmentary lineage system was actually a network of factions that cut across genealogical lines. Moreover, the political impact of the Moroccan state on the precolonial Rif was far more important than Hart suggested.  相似文献
