The harmonic radar: a new method of tracing insects in the field   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
ABSTRACT.
  • 1 A novel technique for tracing the movements of insects in the field is described.
  • 2 The detection system is based on radar technology originally developed for locating avalanche victims. The key of the system is a tiny electronic diode that, glued to the insect, can reflect microwave beams emitted by portable detection equipment.
  • 3 The technique has been successfully tested in a field-tracing experiment with carabid beetles. The results show that these insects are capable of dispersing surprisingly long distances in a relatively short period of time.

The Swedish moose was analysed for genetic variability at major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I and class II DQA, DQB and DRB loci using restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) and single strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) techniques. Both methods revealed limited amounts of polymorphism. Since the SSCP analysis concerned an expressed DRB gene it can be concluded that the level of functional MHC class II polymorphism, at least at the DRB locus, is low in Swedish moose. DNA fingerprinting was used to determine if the unusual pattern of low MHC variability could be explained by a low degree of genome-wide genetic diversity. Hybridizations with two minisatellite probes gave similarity indices somewhat higher than the average for other natural population, but the data suggest that the low MHC variability cannot be explained by a recent population bottleneck. However, since minisatellite sequences evolve more rapidly than MHC sequences, the low levels of MHC diversity may be attributed to a bottleneck of more ancient origin. The selection pressure for MHC variability in moose may also be reduced and we discuss the possibility that its solitary life style may reduce lateral transmission of pathogens in the population.  相似文献

Forty-six species of the genus Dolichoiulus , all endemic, occur on the Canary Islands The highest number of species occur on the largest, highest island (Tenerife); fewest occur on Lanzarote, Fuerteventura (low, xeric), El Hierro and La Palma (small, remote). Most of the Dolichoiulus species live on one island only, as in other endemic Canarian species swarms. The scarcity of pluri-insular Dolichoiulus species, in connection with information on phylogeny, suggests that speciation has mainly taken place within individual islands. Distribution patterns are partly governed by habitat differences between species, but vicariance patterns between species living in the same kind of habitat are evident on La Gomera and Tenerife. Dolichoiulus species occur in all kinds of natural habitats. Laurisilva and cave species are generally paler than other species. In the laurisilva of eastern Tenerife, microhabitat differentiation between species is pronounced. In some, but far from all, cases, species coexisting in the same microhabitat are of different sizes. The ancestral colonizing species of Dolichoiulus is/are hypothesized to have been small and to have lived in coastal habitats. Colonization of higher altitudes was usually accompanied by an increase in body size. Invasion of the laurisilva was usually accompanied by a habitat shift from the ground layer to logs.  相似文献

The extent to which species richness patterns of the major palm subfamilies in the Americas are controlled by lineage history was studied. Based on the fossil record, we suggest that the subfamily Coryphoideae has followed a boreotropical dispersal route into Central and South America, whereas Calamoideae (tribe Lepidocaryeae), Ceroxyloideae and Arecoideae have Gondwana/South America-biased histories. However, Arecoideae has been present and diverse in both South and Central America at least since the early Tertiary. We used regression analyses to evaluate the relative importance of environmental factors and spatial variables (as substitutes for historical or other non-environmental factors) as determinants of geographical variation in species richness for each subfamily. Given the different lineage histories, we hypothesized that: (1) coryphoid richness should be least strongly controlled by the modern environment and exhibit a strong non-environmental bias towards Central and North America, reflecting its boreotropical invasion route, (2) calamoid species richness should exhibit a non-environmental bias towards South America, reflecting its long African–South American history, and (3) arecoid species richness should be most strongly environmentally determined, reflecting the long arecoid residency in both Central and South America. The regression analyses confirmed the hypothesized effects of lineage history on the geographical patterns in species richness. Hence, modern species richness patterns in the New World palm subfamilies strongly reflect their divergent biogeographical histories.  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 151 , 113–125.  相似文献

Siphonocryptus compactus Pocock, 1894 (Sumatra), is redescribed from type and fresh material. Siphonocryptus latior sp. n. (Malaya) is described. Hirudicryptus gen. n. (monotypic) is erected, type-species Siphonocryptus canariensis Loksa, 1967 (Canary Islands, Madeira). Arguments for monophyly of Siphonocryptidae (= Siphonocryptus + Hirudicryptus ) and for a sister-group relationship between Siphonocryptidae and all other Polyzoniida arc presented. The strongly disjunct distribution area of the family is compared with other disjunct distributions involving the Canary Islands and Madeira.  相似文献

Abstract Managers of recovering wolf (Canis lupus) populations require knowledge regarding the potential impacts caused by the loss of territorial, breeding wolves when devising plans that aim to balance population goals with human concerns. Although ecologists have studied wolves extensively, we lack an understanding of this phenomenon as published records are sparse. Therefore, we pooled data (n = 134 cases) on 148 territorial breeding wolves (75 M and 73 F) from our research and published accounts to assess the impacts of breeder loss on wolf pup survival, reproduction, and territorial social groups. In 58 of 71 cases (84%), ≥1 pup survived, and the number or sex of remaining breeders (including multiple breeders) did not influence pup survival. Pups survived more frequently in groups of ≥6 wolves (90%) compared with smaller groups (68%). Auxiliary nonbreeders benefited pup survival, with pups surviving in 92% of cases where auxiliaries were present and 64% where they were absent. Logistic regression analysis indicated that the number of adult-sized wolves remaining after breeder loss, along with pup age, had the greatest influence on pup survival. Territorial wolves reproduced the following season in 47% of cases, and a greater proportion reproduced where one breeder had to be replaced (56%) versus cases where both breeders had to be replaced (9%). Group size was greater for wolves that reproduced the following season compared with those that did not reproduce. Large recolonizing (>75 wolves) and saturated wolf populations had similar times to breeder replacement and next reproduction, which was about half that for small recolonizing (≤75 wolves) populations. We found inverse relationships between recolonizing population size and time to breeder replacement (r= —0.37) and time to next reproduction (r= —0.36). Time to breeder replacement correlated strongly with time to next reproduction (r=0.97). Wolf social groups dissolved and abandoned their territories subsequent to breeder loss in 38% of cases. Where groups dissolved, wolves reestablished territories in 53% of cases, and neighboring wolves usurped territories in an additional 21% of cases. Fewer groups dissolved where breeders remained (26%) versus cases where breeders were absent (85%). Group size after breeder loss was smaller where groups dissolved versus cases where groups did not dissolve. To minimize negative impacts, we recommend that managers of recolonizing wolf populations limit lethal control to solitary individuals or territorial pairs where possible, because selective removal of pack members can be difficult. When reproductive packs are to be managed, we recommend that managers only remove wolves from reproductive packs when pups are ≥6 months old and packs contain ≥6 members (including ≥3 ad-sized wolves). Ideally, such packs should be close to neighboring packs and occur within larger (≥75 wolves) recolonizing populations.  相似文献

Protoplasts, enzymatically isolated from cell suspension cultures of Daucus carota, have been grown in small Petri-dishes. After enzyme treatment and washing the protoplasts were plated in agar media. Growth and divisions were viewed through the bottom of the Petri-dishes with a light microscope. Different osmotic stabilizers were tested with respect to their ability to promote wall formation and growth of the protoplasts. Combinations of sucrose, sorbitol and “Modopeg” gave the best results. Electron micrographs of cultured protoplasts revealed normal as well as abnormal nuclear conditions.  相似文献

The agglutinating effects of Concanavalin A (Con A) on protoplasts isolated from cell suspensions of Daucus carota were studied. Con A was shown to agglutinate the plant protoplasts in a manner similar to the way some animal cells are agglutinated. The agglutination process is dependent on the Concanavalin A concentration, protoplast density, treatment time, the temperature, and the membrane condition, α-D-Methylgluco-pyranosid completely inhibited Con A induced agglutination. The results are discussed in relation to membrane structure and morphology.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Fungus-growing termites live in an obligate mutualistic symbiosis with Termitomyces fungi. The functions of the fungal symbiont have been hypothesised to differ between species and to range from highly specific roles of providing plant-degrading enzymes complementary to termite gut enzymes, to non-specific roles of providing protein-rich food to the termites.
2. Termite species with unspecialised fungal symbionts are predicted to be associated with a wider range of symbionts than species with specialised symbionts. Recent DNA data have confirmed this prediction, but evidence for differences in functional specificity has been sparse and indirect.
3. Here the consequences of symbiont interaction specificity are experimentally tested by reciprocally exchanging the fungal symbionts of sympatric colonies of Macrotermes natalensis and Odontotermes badius , which were inferred to have specialised and non-specialised symbionts respectively.
4. As expected, survival of O. badius termites on M. natalensis fungus was not significantly worse than on their own fungus, but survival of M. natalensis termites on O. badius fungus was significantly reduced.
5. This asymmetric result confirms that symbiont roles differ significantly between macrotermitine genera and indicates that symbiont transplantation experiments are a powerful tool for testing the functional details of mutualistic symbioses.  相似文献
