The extent to which species richness patterns of the major palm subfamilies in the Americas are controlled by lineage history was studied. Based on the fossil record, we suggest that the subfamily Coryphoideae has followed a boreotropical dispersal route into Central and South America, whereas Calamoideae (tribe Lepidocaryeae), Ceroxyloideae and Arecoideae have Gondwana/South America-biased histories. However, Arecoideae has been present and diverse in both South and Central America at least since the early Tertiary. We used regression analyses to evaluate the relative importance of environmental factors and spatial variables (as substitutes for historical or other non-environmental factors) as determinants of geographical variation in species richness for each subfamily. Given the different lineage histories, we hypothesized that: (1) coryphoid richness should be least strongly controlled by the modern environment and exhibit a strong non-environmental bias towards Central and North America, reflecting its boreotropical invasion route, (2) calamoid species richness should exhibit a non-environmental bias towards South America, reflecting its long African–South American history, and (3) arecoid species richness should be most strongly environmentally determined, reflecting the long arecoid residency in both Central and South America. The regression analyses confirmed the hypothesized effects of lineage history on the geographical patterns in species richness. Abstract. Combined gas chromatography-mass spectrometry has been used to identify 3-indole acetic acid in an extract from protoplasts of barley. In addition, a study has been made of the effect of light on the rate of catabolism of [2-14C]-3-indole acetic acid by protoplasts, a chloroplast-rich fraction and a crude cytoplasmic preparation from barley leaves. While light enhanced the rate of catabolism of [2-14C]-3-indok acetic acid by protoplasts and, to a lesser degree, by the chloroplast-rich fraction, it did not affect the catabolic activity of the crude, cytoplasmic fraction. These findings, when considered along with the data of Sandberg, Jensen & Crozier (1983), imply that the rate of turnover of 3-indole acetic acid, in both protoplasts and chloroplasts, is more rapid in light than it is in darkness.  相似文献

Juvenile trees of temperate and boreal regions cease growth and set buds in autumn in response to short day-lengths (SD) detected by phytochrome. Growth cessation and bud set are prerequisites for the development of winter dormancy and full cold hardiness. In this study we show that the SD-requirement for bud set and cold hardening can be overcome in hybrid aspen (Populus tremula L. × tremuloides Michx.) by low night temperature and inhibition of gibberellin (GA) biosynthesis. Bud set and increased cold hardiness were observed under normally non-inductive long day-length (LD) in wild-type plants, when exposed to low night temperature and paclobutrazol. In addition, the effect of PHYA overexpression could be overcome in transgenic plants, producing bud set and cold acclimation by treatment with: SD, low night temperature and paclobutrazol. After cold acclimation, the degree of bud dormancy was lower for wild-type plants prior treated with LD and transgenic plants (overexpressing PHYA), than SD-treated, wild-type plants. Thus, low night temperature in combination with reduced GA content induced bud set and promoted cold hardiness under normally non-inductive photoperiods in hybrid aspen, but was unable to affect development of dormancy. This might suggest separate signalling pathways from phytochrome regulating the induction of cold/cold hardiness and bud dormancy in hybrid aspen or alternatively, there might be one pathway that fails to complete its action in the transgenic and paclobutrazol treated plants.  相似文献

1. When the rat livers are perfused under the conditions of these experiments with rat blood diluted with saline, the livers remain capable of removing colloidal chromic phosphate normally for 4 hours or more; that is, the reticuloendothelial system continues to function normally. 2. Good rates of bile flow continue, generally for 4 hours. 3. The livers incorporate radioactivity from the amino acids methionine, lysine, and histidine at rapid rates for 1 or 2 hours. Thereafter the rates fall. 4. The specific activity of the free lysine and histidine in the perfusate falls rapidly during the experiments (to 25 or 35 per cent of its original value at 10 minutes). 5. The fall in rate of incorporation of radioactivity is attributable to the fall in amino acid specific activity. 6. Addition of a complete amino acid mixture to the perfusate does not appear to have any stimulatory effect on incorporation of radioactivity from labelled amino acids. 7. With lysine, on the assumption that incorporation is due to new protein formation, there is a rate of synthesis equivalent to 230 mg. of plasma protein per 100 gm. of rat per day. This result is in agreement with turnover data obtained from rats in vivo. 8. The results emphasize once again the importance of precursor specific activity in the interpretation of metabolic experiments with labelled amino acids.  相似文献

1. Effects of the frequency and duration of flooding on the structural and functional characteristics of riparian vegetation were studied at four sites (n = 80, 50 × 50 cm, plots) along medium‐sized naturally meandering lowland streams. Special focus was on rich fens, which – due to their high species richness – are of high priority in nature conservation. 2. Reed beds, rich fens and meadows were all regularly flooded during the 20‐year study period, with a higher frequency in reed bed areas than in rich fen and meadow areas. In rich fens, species richness was higher in low frequency flooded areas (≤3 year?1) than in areas with a high frequency of flooding (>3 year?1) or no flooding, whereas species richness in reed beds and meadows was unaffected by flood frequency. 3. The percentage of stress‐tolerant species was higher in low intensity flooded rich fen areas than in high intensity and non‐flooded areas, indicating that the higher species richness in low frequency flooded rich fens was caused by competitive release. We found no indication that increased productivity was associated with high flooding frequencies. 4. We conclude that the restoration of morphological features in stream channels to increase the flooding regime can be beneficial for protected vegetation within riparian areas, but also that groundwater discharge thresholds and critical levels for protected vegetation should be identified and considered when introducing stream ecosystem restoration plans.  相似文献

1. The specific respiration rate of 13 chironomid taxa and Chaoborus were measured to test the hypothesis of the relation between a species' ability to regulate their oxygen uptake and their distributional patterns among nine study lakes in British Columbia, Canada.
2. Respiration patterns of individual taxa were modelled using piecewise linear regression with break point and simple hyperbolic functions. Three types of respiration curves were identified: (i) classical oxy-conformers (e.g. littoral Cricotopus ) which cannot sustain a sufficient oxygen uptake with decreasing oxygen availability; (ii) oxy-regulators (e.g. profundal Chironomus ) which can regulate and maintain a constant respiration until a certain critical point and (iii) oxy-stressors ( Micropsectra ) which increase their respiration rate with decreasing oxygen availability until a critical point.
3. Respiration was measured at two different temperatures (10 and 20 °C), and over the range of oxygen saturation conditions studied here (0–90%) mean Q 10 values varied from 1.3 to 2.5.
4. The results show that different chironomid taxa have varying sensitivity to low oxygen concentrations and different respiratory responses to increased temperature. The critical point increased to higher oxygen saturation for six taxa, decreased for one taxon and was unchanged for two taxa.
5. The results illustrate one of the possible biological mechanisms behind the use of chironomids as temperature and climate indicators in palaeoecological studies by exploring the link between temperature and respiration physiology.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Malarial parasites infecting mammalian hosts are considered to be homolactate fermentors at their asexual intraerythrocytic developmental stage; however, existing ultrastructural and biochemical evidence suggest that their acristate mitochondria could be involved in energy metabolism. In the present study, inhibitors of mitochondrial function including compounds which act on NADH and succinate dehydrogenases, electron transport and mitochondrial ATPase, as well as uncouplers, were found to inhibit the growth and propagation of the human parasite Plasmodium falciparum in in vitro cultures at concentrations that specifically affect mitochondrial functions. Direct measurement of parasite protein and nucleic acid synthesis in synchronized cultures showed that throughout the parasite life cycle both processes were inhibited, the latter process being more sensitive. These results strongly suggest that intraerythrocytic malarial parasites require mitochondrial energy production.  相似文献
