We present a phylogenetic and taxonomic study of the morphology and biology of the terminal‐instar larval stage of 19 species representing all the genera of Torymidae parasitoids of gall wasps in Europe, with the single exception of Megastigmus. The genera studied include Adontomerus Nikol'skaya, Idiomacromerus Crawford, Chalcimerus Steffan & Andriescu, Glyphomerus Förster, Pseudotorymus Masi and Torymus Dalman. We primarily used chaetotaxy and some head structures. The terminal‐instar larvae of all studied species are thoroughly described for the first time and illustrated with SEM images. We provide diagnostic characters for the family and the genera studied, and keys to genera and species for the identification of torymid larvae associated with cynipid galls. The majority of the torymid larvae studied are solitary monophagous parasitoids. Finally, to assess the potential use of larval characters in systematic studies of the family, a phylogenetic analysis of the studied taxa based on 42 larval morphological characters is proposed and compared with the current taxonomy of Torymidae. 1. Freshwater shrimps often dominate the biomass of tropical island streams and are known to have strong effects on stream ecosystem structure and function, but little effort has been dedicated toward quantifying basic energetic and life history attributes such as growth, production and longevity. Such information is critical for understanding both the role of shrimps in ecosystem dynamics and the gravity of threats to shrimp populations posed by human activities such as shrimp harvesting, dam construction and water withdrawal. 2. We quantified growth rates and secondary production of dominant freshwater shrimps for 3 years in two Puerto Rican headwater streams that differ in food web structure because of the presence or absence of predatory fishes that are excluded from reaches above waterfalls. Using growth data, we constructed a minimum longevity model to explore the likely minimum life spans of the two dominant taxa (Atya spp. and Xiphocaris elongata). Finally, we used a bioenergetics model to quantify annual consumption rates of major basal resources by the two taxa. 3. Daily growth rates ranged from ?0.001 to 0.011 day?1, were inversely related to body size, and were higher for small individuals of X. elongata than Atya spp. Mean annual shrimp biomass and secondary production were an order of magnitude higher in the stream that lacked predatory fishes (biomass: 4.34 g AFDM m?2; production: 0.89 g AFDM m?2 year?1) than in the stream with predatory fishes (biomass: 0.12 g AFDM m?2; production: 0.02 g AFDM m?2 year?1). Production : biomass ratios ranged from 0.01 to 0.38. 4. Our longevity model predicted a minimum life span of 8 years for Atya spp. and 5 years for X. elongata in the stream lacking predatory fishes. In contrast, due to a larger average size of X. elongata in the stream with predatory fishes, our model predicted a minimum life span of 11 years. Actual life spans of these taxa are likely to be much longer based on long‐term observations of marked individuals. 5. Estimated consumption rates from the bioenergetics model indicated that Atya spp. and X. elongata are important processors of organic matter resources in streams where they occur at high densities. Atya spp. and X. elongata appeared capable of consuming a large proportion of algal and insect production and the proportion of direct leaf litter inputs consumed was also appreciable (c. 40–60%). However, the consumption of suspended fine particulate organic matter (SFPOM) by Atya spp. is probably only a minor proportion of total SFPOM flux in these streams. 6. Our study suggests that geomorphic features such as waterfalls may play an important role in controlling the distribution and production of freshwater shrimps through their effects on predatory fish movement. Spatial differences in shrimp densities result in landscape‐scale variation in the significance to ecosystem processes of these long‐lived organisms, particularly as processors of major organic matter resources. 相似文献

Comparison of the diversity and community structure of Coleoptera (Passalidae) collected in Los Tuxtlas, Veracruz, Mexico, in primary and secondary tropical forest has been carried out. The saproxylophagous beetles studied can be differentiated according to their presence in three distinct microhabitats of rotting logs: underbark, sapwood—heartwood and microhabitat generalists. Over the 2-year study period, 12 passalid species were recorded (six Passalini and six Proculini) represented by a total of 2971 individuals, collected from 234 rotting logs. The rarefaction method, the lognormal species—abundance relationship, and the nonparametric jackknife method were used to compare species richness between the habitats. The data were also fitted to log series, truncated lognormal, geometric, and broken-stick species abundance models to detect changes in community structure. The community composition of Passalidae in Los Tuxtlas did not differ ostensibly between the primary and secondary forests. Neither the mean number of individuals nor the biomass per log differed significantly. Furthermore, there were no significant differences between the two habitats in terms of the number of underbark, sapwood/heartwood, and microhabitat generalist species. Different richness estimators indicated that the primary forest community is only slightly richer. The slight decrease in richness of the secondary forest is related to a decrease in dominance by certain species, as well as to a more balanced abundance distribution, which is adequately described by the broken-stick model. Complementary explanations for this pattern may be: (1) that logging reduces the abundance of dominant species, thus preventing competitive exclusion in the secondary forest; and (2) that passalid diversity is not regulated by the diversity of tree species. 相似文献

Morphological variation of the Y chromosome has been observed in different populations. This variation is mostly related to the heteromorphic Yq12 band, which is composed of a variable block of constitutive heterochromatin. The Yqh+ heteromorphism has a worldwide frequency of 2.85% and is considered clinically innocuous. The aim of this study was to identify the ancestry of the Yqh+ heteromorphism present in individuals from western Mexico. For this purpose, 17 Y-chromosome single nucleotide polymorphisms were analysed by multiplex polymerase chain reaction and SNaPshot assays. In 28 Yqh+ males, only five haplogroups were observed; with a haplogroup diversity of 0.4841 ± 0.1094, which was less than that observed in a study of unselected Mexican mestizo population. Differences were specifically conferred by the high frequencies of haplogroups R1b1 and P*(xQ,R), and by the absence of the Amerindian haplogroup Q (Q*(xQ1a3a) plus Q1a3a) from the Yqh+ group. This study suggests a post-1492 incorporation for Yqh+ chromosomes into the Mexican northwestern population. 相似文献

Recent studies of female insects indicate that reproductive activities, such as mating and oviposition, can impair immune ability. Using the two tropical damselfly species Argia anceps Garrison and Hetaerina americana (Fabricius), egg production and phenoloxidase (PO) activity, a key enzyme in insect immunity, are measured in mating, ovipositing and perching females in December and March. Perching females of both species have fewer eggs compared with mating and ovipositing females, which suggests that perching females are not engaged in reproduction. There is seasonal variation in egg number for the three categories in H. americana but not in A. anceps, which can be interpreted in terms of adaptive changes in egg production depending on female–male interactions in the former species but not in the latter species. There is no difference in PO activity among mating, ovipositing or perching females within either species, although measurements in December and March indicate distinct seasonal changes. Juvenile Hormone (JH) is known to reduce the effectiveness of the immune system by favouring the use of resources for reproduction. A possible role for JH is examined in H. americana, using the JH analogue methoprene to manipulate hormone activity, revealing that PO activity is reduced in methoprene‐treated H. americana females. Thus, although the results of the present study are indicative of possible hormone‐driven changes in PO, there is not necessarily a down‐regulation of immune function (as determined by PO activity) during mating or oviposition. The results complement some recent studies countering the idea that reproductive activities reduce the immune ability in insects. 相似文献

1. Predators select a prey according to its energetic and nutritional composition. Generalist predators avoid, whereas specialists often specialise on well‐defended prey. The aim of this study was to find the suitability of woodlice prey for generalist and specialist predators by comparing their handling efficiency. 2. Laboratory experiments were performed in which specialist and generalist predators were reared on monotypic diets comprising one or other of two woodlice species that differ in their defensive strategies: rollers (Armadillidium) and clingers (Porcellio). A control group was reared on a mixture of arthropods (excluding woodlice). Three spider predators were used that differ in their adaptations to deal with woodlice prey: a woodlice specialist, Dysdera crocata; an oligophagous generalist, Pholcus phalangioides, that also captures woodlice; and a euryphagous generalist, Tegenaria domestica, that does not feed on woodlice. The frequency of capture was recorded and various fitness parameters were measured, namely survival, growth rate, and ontogenetic development. 3. It was found that the specialist, D. crocata, performed best on the Porcellio diet, and similarly well on Armadillidium and mixed diets. The two generalists, P. phalangioides and T. domestica, had poor performance on both woodlice diets but performed well on the mixed diet. 4. Information on Diptera community, seasonality and successional patterns in every geographical region is fundamental for the use of flies as forensic indicators of time of death. In order to obtain these data from the Lisbon area (Portugal), experiments were conducted during the four seasons of the year, using piglet carcasses as animal models. Five stages were recognized during the decomposition process. The stages, besides visually defined, could be separated taking into account the occurrence and abundance of the specific groups of Diptera collected. In general, the bloated stage recorded higher abundance and species‐richness values. Seventy‐one species were identified, belonging to 39 families, in a total of 20 144 adult Diptera collected. Autumn yielded the highest values of species richness, whereas winter had the lowest. In all seasons of the year, Calliphoridae was the dominant family; Muscidae and Fanniidae were very abundant as well. Calliphora vicina Robineau‐Desvoidy, Calliphora vomitoria (Linnaeus), Chrysomya albiceps (Wiedemann), Lucilia ampullacea Villeneuve, Lucilia caesar (Linnaeus), Lucilia sericata (Meigen) (Calliphoridae), Hydrotaea ignava (Harris), Muscina prolapsa (Harris), Synthesiomyia nudiseta (van der Wulp) (Muscidae), Piophila megastigmata McAlpine, Stearibia nigriceps (Meigen) (Piophilidae) and Nemopoda nitidula (Fallén) (Sepsidae) were revealed to be very important members of the Diptera community collected. The necrophagous behaviour, demonstrated by their immatures, using carrion as a food source makes them useful forensic indicator species. Also of relevance is the presence of Chrysomya megacephala (Fabricius), S. nudiseta and P. megastigmata, foreign species established in the local carrion communities. Abstract In this article, the more usual mandible fracture areas are located by identifying the highest stress lines using a three-dimensional (tetrahedral) finite element method. By taking into account the temporomandibular contact and the inertia effects, the mathematical model is considered to be a dynamic Signorini's problem, that is, a dynamic variational inequality which is discretized in time following Newmark's method. So, in each time step a stationary variational inequality is solved by a penalty-duality algorithm. 1. An increasing number of studies have addressed the mechanisms by which plant inter‐specific variation influence interactions at higher trophic levels, but little is known about the underlying plant traits driving these dynamics. 2. Here we investigated the effects of host plant species on herbivore‐parasitoid interactions and the underlying traits driving such effects. For this, we measured the abundance of seed‐eating bruchids and their parasitoids across seven sympatric populations of the bean species Phaseolus coccineus and Phaseolus vulgaris in Central Mexico. To investigate the mechanisms underlying differences between bean species in bruchid‐parasitoid interactions, we carried out two laboratory experiments to test whether bruchid and parasitoid performance differed between plant species. We also measured seed size and phenolic compounds to investigate if seed traits mediate bruchid‐parasitoid interactions by influencing herbivore susceptibility or resistance to parasitoids. 3. Field surveys revealed that the rate of parasitoid recruitment to bruchids was significantly higher on P. vulgaris than on P. coccineus. Subsequent laboratory bioassays indicated that bruchids developed more slowly and exhibited lower fitness on P. vulgaris seeds than on P. coccineus seeds. Accordingly, we found that bean species differed in seed size, with P. vulgaris having smaller (less nutritious) seeds, which explains why bruchid development was slower on this plant species. 4. These results provide a mechanism for why bruchids exhibited higher parasitism rates on seeds of P. vulgaris in the field which could be due to Slow‐Growth/High‐Mortality effects, a smaller physical refuge provided by the seed, or both factors.
