Alnus maritima is a shrub that associates with N2-fixing Frankia in the wetlands in which it is native. Despite low concentrations in waterlogged soils, O2 is critical to the maintenance of this symbiosis, and Frankia-infected nodules exist on roots of plants in native stands. The objective of the present study was to determine how root-zone O2 concentration influences N2 fixation and the anatomy of nodules on A. maritima. Root zones of plants inoculated with soil from native stands were exposed to eight O2 concentrations. Nitrogenase activity increased with increasing O2 concentration. Photosynthetic rate, plant dry mass, leaf N content, and nodule fresh mass were maximal in plants maintained with 15–25% O2 in the root zone. Nodule counts were maximal on roots maintained at 10% and above 25% O2, and nodules that developed at ≤ 2% O2 were < 2 mm in diameter and single-lobed. Mean total area of air spaces within nodules decreased, and mean area per space increased, with increasing O2 concentration. Seasonal and O2-dependent nodule pigmentation was observed. Our data illustrate that O2 is critical to the development of functional symbioses, and that nodules of this species, which are submersed in nature, possess mechanisms for responding to their low-O2 environment.  相似文献

1. It is well recognised that non-indigenous species (NIS) can affect native communities via the 'spillover' of introduced parasites. However, two other potentially important processes, the 'spillback' of native parasites from a competent NIS host, where the latter acts as a reservoir leading to amplified infection in native hosts, and the 'dilution' of parasitism by a NIS host acting as a sink for native parasites, have either not been tested or largely overlooked.
2. We surveyed the helminth parasite fauna of native New Zealand fish in Otago streams that varied in the abundance of introduced brown trout Salmo trutta , to look for evidence of spillback and/or dilution. Spillover is not an issue in this system, with trout introduced as parasite-free eggs.
3. Seven native parasite species were present across 12 sites; significant inverse relationships with an index of trout abundance (i.e. dilution) were documented for three species infecting the native upland bully Gobiomorphus breviceps , and one species infecting the native roundhead galaxias Galaxias anomalus .
4. An inverse relationship between bully energy status and infection intensity of one parasite species suggests that parasite dilution could have positive effects on bully populations. Our failure to detect similar relationships for the other parasites does not preclude the possibility that dilution is beneficial to native fish, since parasites may have subtle or unmeasured impacts.
5. The parasite dilution patterns reported are compelling in that they occurred across several native host and parasite species; as such they have important implications for invasion ecology, providing an interesting contrast to the largely negative impacts reported for NIS. Mechanisms potentially responsible for the patterns observed are discussed.  相似文献

1. Specialisation in host plant use is strongly correlated with speciation in many plant‐feeding insects. Specialised taxa, however, could be restricted in host range due to limits in ecological availability of host plant species rather than trade‐offs in using alternate host species. 2. Moths in the genus Prodoxus are extreme specialists on Yucca and speciation is closely tied to host plant shifts. However, many Yucca ranges are allopatric. This study examined whether the bogus yucca moth Prodoxus decipiens is limited in host range because of biogeographic factors or due to differences in the characteristics of host plant species. 3. In a common garden, local P. decipiens moths that use Yucca filamentosa were exposed to individuals of five Yucca species, two that are known hosts of P. decipiens in other parts of its range and three that are used by its sister species, Prodoxus quinquepunctellus. 4. Local moths were attracted to flowers of all Yucca species and females attempted oviposition in the flowering stalks of all species. However, larvae successfully completed development to diapause in only one of the five host plant species. Larval development on non‐natal Yucca species was significantly reduced compared with the local host. 5. The results suggest that differences in host plant characteristics among Yucca species would result in strong natural selection during a host shift. Thus, specialisation in host plant use is probably due to trade‐offs involved with using novel host plant species as well as ecological availability.  相似文献

1. Parts of the Namibian landscape show extensive surface perturbation in the form of long‐lived, yet dynamic ‘fairy circles'. While exerting profound ecological effects on 7.3% of the land surface, the origin and nature of these large bare discs embedded in an arid grassland matrix remains unresolved. 2. We found no evidence to support the current hypothesis of a termite origin for fairy circles but instead observed a strong spatial association between fairy circles and large nests of the ant Black pugnacious ant Anoplolepis steingroeveri Forel, with much higher ant abundances on the circles compared with the matrix. 3. Aggression trials showed that different colonies of A. steingroeveri were located on different circles, and that the species was polydomous. 4. Fairy circles and Pogonomyrmex ant nests both have a bare disc surrounding the nest, are overdispersed (evenly spaced), and are associated with elevated soil moisture. Fairy circle soils exhibited a five‐fold increase in soil moisture when compared with the matrix. 5. Senescent Stipagrostis obtusa (Delile) Nees seedlings were only observed on the circles and not in the matrix, and were found to have a reduction in both root length and number of roots. 6. Anoplolepis steingroeveri excavated the root system of both S. obtusa seedlings on the disc and Stipagrostis ciliata (Desf.) de Winter grasses on the perimeter of the circles, where they tended honeydew‐secreting Meenoplidae bugs that fed on grass roots and culms. The bugs occurred almost exclusively on grasses associated with the circles. This ant–bug interaction is a possible mechanism for the observed reduction in root length and number of senescent grass seedlings on the circles.  相似文献

Few data are available to validate the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's (IPCC) emission factors for indirect emissions of nitrous oxide (N2O). In particular the N2O emissions resulting from nitrogen leaching and the associated groundwater and surface drainage (EF5-g) are particularly poorly characterized. In situ push–pull methods have been used to identify the fate of NO3 in the groundwater. In this study, we adapted a previously published in situ denitrification push–pull method to examine the fate of 15N2O introduced into the subsoil–groundwater matrix. Enriched 15N2O was manufactured, added to groundwater via a closed system in the laboratory, and then introduced into the groundwater–subsoil matrix in an upland-marsh transition zone of a salt marsh and a forested alluvial riparian zone. Conservative tracers (SF6 and Br) and 15N2O were injected into the groundwater and left for 1–4 h after which the groundwater was sampled. Added 15N2O behaved in a conservative manner at one site while the other site showed variability with some injections showing significant consumption (3–8 μg N2O-15N kg−1 soil day−1) of 15N2O. Our results show that the fate and dynamics of N2O in groundwater are complex and variable and that these dynamics should be considered in the development of improved IPCC inventory calculations.  相似文献

1. Monitoring at fortnightly to monthly intervals of a very shallow, lowland lake over 24 years has enabled the time course of recovery from nutrient enrichment to be investigated after high external P loading of the lake (>10 g P m?2 year?1) was reduced between 1977 and 1980. 2. The lake showed a relatively rapid response during the spring and early summer, with a reduction in phytoplankton biomass occurring after 5 years when soluble reactive phosphorus concentration was <10 μg L?1. 3. However, during the later summer the response was delayed for 15 years because of sustained remobilisation of phosphorus from the sediment. The greater water clarity in spring and a gradual shift from planktonic to benthic algal growth may be related to the reduction in internal loading after 15 years. 4. Changes in the phytoplankton community composition were also observed. Centric diatoms became less dominant in the spring, and the summer cyanobacteria populations originally dominated by non‐heterocystous species (Limnothrix/Planktothrix spp.) almost disappeared. Heterocystous species (Anabaena spp. and Aphanizomenon flosaquae) were slower to decline, but after 20 years the phytoplankton community was no longer dominated by cyanobacteria. 5. There were no substantial changes in food web structure following re‐oligotrophication. Total zooplankton biomass decreased but body size of Daphnia hyalina, the largest zooplankton species in the lake, remained unchanged, suggesting that the fish population remained dominated by planktivorous species. 6. Macrophyte growth was still largely absent after 20 years, although during the spring water clarity may have become sufficient for macrophytes to re‐establish.  相似文献

The average duration of survival of 15 cases of childhood leukemia treated with corticotropin and cortisone was 6.8 months. This survival was the same as observed among 59 children who received no treatment, or treatment with x-ray, or blood transfusion alone. Despite the fact that objective evidence of remission was observed in 7 of 15 children treated with corticotropin and cortisone, the remissions were not reflected by a longer duration of life. Treatment of childhood leukemia with corticotropin and cortisone appears to be a palliative measure, without significant effect on the duration of life.  相似文献

Abstract Seed production in the endemic New Zealand mistletoe Peraxilla tetrapetala (Loranthaceae) has been shown to be consistently pollen limited, but to date there has been no test of whether the species is also seed limited. If it is not seed limited, then pollen limitation may have no effect on population size. We tested for seed limitation by sowing seeds onto host trees at high and low densities at two sites, and following survival for up to 69 months. Our rationale was that unless there is strong density‐dependent seedling mortality sufficient to negate increases in seed supply, the species would be seed limited. We simultaneously measured pollen limitation at both sites using pollen augmentation. Peraxilla tetrapetala was strongly pollen limited at both sites over 7 years at Ohau (mean Pollen Limitation Index 0.62), and 12 years at Craigieburn (mean PLI 0.44), before and during the seed‐limitation study. There was no significant overall negative effect of density on survival in sown P. tetrapetala seeds over 42–69 months. There was a significant positive effect: seeds were more likely to adhere to branches when sown at high densities. This initial advantage to high‐density seeds was gradually eroded by slightly (but non‐significantly) lower survival rates of adhered seeds at high density. By the end of the study there was no significant difference in overall survival in high and low density plantings. This means that P. tetrapetala was apparently both pollen limited and seed limited at both our sites. Hence, reduced densities of native bird pollinators caused by introduced mammalian carnivores are likely to reduce the density of adult mistletoes in the next generation. However, the generality of this result may be affected by the fact that mistletoes do not have a dense ‘seedling shadow’ under the parent mistletoe.  相似文献
