The transport of abscisic acid in cotyledonary petiole sectionsof cotton seedlings was investigated using (2-14C)-ABA in adonor-receiver system. Using the intercept technique, a transportvelocity of 22.4 mm/hr was determined. This velocity was foundto be independent of the length of the petiole or of the concentrationof ABA applied. In a 24-hr period 70% of the applied ABA movedthrough the tissue sections. No polarity was found in any ofthe studies. The capacity of the transport system decreased with increasingage of the tissue and with increasing time of pre-exposure toABA. When metabolism of the tissue was restricted by cold temperature,low-O2 tension or DNP treatment, transport was inhibited 80to 98%.The distribution of ABA in the petiole during transportwas also investigated. Assimilation and growth of Picea sitchensis seedlings maintainedat three light intensities were examined in relation to previously-reporteddata on tracheid development in this species. Increases in photosynthetic efficiency with decreased lightlevel failed to compensate completely for reduced total amountsof incident radiation as judged from assimilate distributionpattern and growth rate. Incorporation of assimilate into reservesand new growth declined with decreased light level, while theextent of turnover materials generally increased. Most treatment differences in relative dry weight distributionappeared to result from a combination of differences in growthrate and changes in growth pattern. The proportion of dry weightin branches and roots increased with increased light intensitywhile that in stems and the hypocotyl decreased At the two highest light levels tested, both absolute stem growthrate and total wall accumulation appeared to be independentof substrate availability. This situation contrasts with thatobserved in older material and it is suggested that the initialindependence reflects the temporary existence of a high ratioof functional foliage to stem and cambial material during thefirst year of growth. Since tracheid diameter showed a consistent, positive relationshipwith assimilate status, it is suggested that substrate levelcan exert an important modifying influence on cell expansion.  相似文献

Two coir netting windbreaks, each 7 m tall and 46 m long, were erected in a pear and an apple orchard, to try to increase the number of insect pollinators present at blossom time. The flying insects were sampled with suction traps and insects visiting trees were sampled by examining marked clusters of blossom. The mean aerial density was calculated for each of the forty-two taxa, mainly families, identified from the aerial population. There were about 50% more insects flying in the pear than in the apple orchard. The distribution of flying insects was greatly affected by the windbreaks, and the sheltered zone contained three times as many of most species, and more than three times as many Chironomidae, Psychodidae and Bibionidae as elsewhere. Small flies were the most abundant insects in the air, in both orchards. In the pear orchard large insects comprised only about 7 % of the total aerial population, of which honeybees constituted 0–7% and wild bees 0–3%. By contrast, large insects accounted for a greater proportion of the population on blossom. The reasons for this are discussed. On apple blossom Syrphidae and honeybees were the insects most often seen, and on pear blossom Bibionidae and Mycetophilidae.  相似文献

1. The effects of small-scale variation in the nature of a river bed upon the colonization dynamics of benthic invertebrates were explored through a series of microhabitat implants placed in a small river in southern Ontario. The implants presented variations in the levels of four microhabitat features: substrate particle size, current regime, added food and light. The sixteen possible combinations of these variables were replicated five times, for a total of eighty implants.
2. After 14 days of exposure, some of the controlled variables had been modified and a number of other variables (sand, fine (FPOM) and coarse (CPOM) particulate organic matter) had been added by the river.
3. Benthic diversity differed among the implants, with sand and CPOM accounting for 15.5% of the variation. Benthic density was more uniform and was weakly related only to added food. Application of the CANOCO program to the data set suggested that, in general, the environmental variables manipulated in this study were not the key factors influencing colonization, although they may have been important in non-linear combination.
4. A number of important positive associations were evident among colonizing species, some of which are thought to reflect those of predator and prey.
5. Control of colonization appears to be through multiple factors (abiotic, biotic, autochthonous, allochthonous) that differ in nature according to species, and which underline the complexity of selection responses of individual taxa to local variations in bed structure. Researchers must acknowledge this multifactorial organization and dynamic nature if workable models of lotic community structure and development are to be forthcoming.  相似文献

Phylogenetic relationships based on 801 base pairs (bp) of the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene are examined for eight genera and 28 species of the akodontine tribe of South American murid rodents. The akodontine tribe comprises some 35% of the total diversity of the subfamily Sigmodontinae, but the current taxonomy at virtually all levels is uncertain because of inadequate generic diagnoses and assessments of variation and trends in traditional morphological characters. Monophyly of the tribe cannot be resolved by the sequence data, based on comparisons to outgroup taxa in three other tribes (Oryzomyini, Phyllotini, and Thomasomyini). However, highly corroborated monophyletic units within the group are obtained in a variety of both parsimony and distance analyses. These include a redefined and numerically dominant genus Akodon (with Microxus and Hypsimys as synonyms), Bolomys, Lenoxus, Oxymycterus, and a strongly supported assemblage that includes the central Andean Chroeomys and 'Akodon' andinus and the southern Abrothrix, 'Akodon' olivaceus, and the long-clawed mice of the genera Notiomys, Geoxus, and Chelemys. Sequence divergence within species is typically less than 5%, although levels can reach 10% for some highly polytypic forms. Divergence among genera within the tribe reaches 35% in corrected estimates, a level that is as great as that among representatives of different tribes. Changes in the current classification of akodontines are suggested based on these data, and the timing and place of origin of the tribe and its radiation is discussed.  相似文献
