Trade-offs arise when two functional traits impose conflicting demands on the same design trait. Consequently, excellence in one comes at the cost of performance in the other. One of the most widely studied performance trade-offs is the one between sprint speed and endurance. Although biochemical, physiological and (bio)mechanical correlates of either locomotor trait conflict with each other, results at the whole-organism level are mixed. Here, we test whether burst (speed, acceleration) and sustained locomotion (stamina) trade off at both the isolated muscle and whole-organism level among 17 species of lacertid lizards. In addition, we test for a mechanical link between the organismal and muscular (power output, fatigue resistance) performance traits. We find weak evidence for a trade-off between burst and sustained locomotion at the whole-organism level; however, there is a significant trade-off between muscle power output and fatigue resistance in the isolated muscle level. Variation in whole-animal sprint speed can be convincingly explained by variation in muscular power output. The variation in locomotor stamina at the whole-organism level does not relate to the variation in muscle fatigue resistance, suggesting that whole-organism stamina depends not only on muscle contractile performance but probably also on the performance of the circulatory and respiratory systems. 相似文献

Phenotypic performance in different environments is central to understanding the evolutionary and ecological processes that drive adaptive divergence and, ultimately, speciation. Because habitat structure can affect an animal’s foraging behaviour, anti-predator defences, and communication behaviour, it can influence both natural and sexual selection pressures. These selective pressures, in turn, act upon morphological traits to maximize an animal’s performance. For performance traits involved in both social and ecological activities, such as bite force, natural and sexual selection often interact in complex ways, providing an opportunity to understand the adaptive significance of morphological variation with respect to habitat. Dwarf chameleons within the Bradypodion melanocephalum-Bradypodion thamnobates species complex have multiple phenotypic forms, each with a specific head morphology that could reflect its use of either open- or closed-canopy habitats. To determine whether these morphological differences represent adaptations to their habitats, we tested for differences in both absolute and relative bite performance. Only absolute differences were found between forms, with the closed-canopy forms biting harder than their open-canopy counterparts. In contrast, sexual dimorphism was found for both absolute and relative bite force, but the relative differences were limited to the closed-canopy forms. These results indicate that both natural and sexual selection are acting within both habitat types, but to varying degrees. Sexual selection seems to be the predominant force within the closed-canopy habitats, which are more protected from aerial predators, enabling chameleons to invest more in ornamentation for communication. In contrast, natural selection is likely to be the predominant force in the open-canopy habitats, inhibiting the development of conspicuous secondary sexual characteristics and, ultimately, enforcing their overall diminutive body size and constraining performance. 相似文献

Given the ever-increasing anthropogenic changes to natural ecosystems, it is imperative that temporal changes in genetic diversity be monitored to help safeguard the future viability of species. Capensibufo rosei is a small, range-restricted bufonid from South Africa, believed to have experienced an enigmatic decline likely due to the suppression of natural fires and the loss of grazing animals from some areas. Without these disturbances, their habitat becomes overgrown, which might affect the characteristics of their breeding pools. Since the 1980s, four breeding sites have been lost, presumably due to loss of breeding habitat through encroachment of vegetation. Currently, there are only two known populations [Cape of Good Hope (CGH) and Silvermine nature reserves] both within Table Mountain National Park. Consequently, this species may be vulnerable to stochastic events and genetic erosion through the loss of metapopulation connectivity. To assess the genetic status of this species, genetic diversity within both populations was quantified for two time periods using 11 microsatellite markers. Despite evidence of severe population bottlenecks, both populations possess levels of diversity similar to other anurans, and Silvermine has greater diversity than CGH. A close examination of the data revealed both populations to be genetically dynamic through time, with the loss and gain of rare alleles. Both populations also experienced a slight increase in overall diversity between sampling periods. While the latter was not statistically significant, the monitoring period was perhaps too short to understand changes in diversity over time. These results will form the baseline for future monitoring to better understand this threatened and declining species and to track genetic erosion or recovery. 相似文献

Many animals show unique morphological and behavioural adaptations to specific habitats. In particular, variation in cranial morphology is known to influence feeding performance, which in turn influences dietary habits and, ultimately, fitness. Dietary separation is an important means of partitioning ecological niches and avoiding inter‐ and intraspecific competition. Consequently, differences in dietary resources may help explain phenotypic divergence in closely‐related species occupying different habitats, as well as sexual dimorphism. We test this hypothesis on five phenotypic forms of a recent radiation of dwarf chameleons (Bradypodion) that vary extensively in habitat use and cranial morphology. By examining stomach contents, the dietary composition of each phenotypic form is compared to investigate potential differences in feeding strategies. Overall, chameleons in the present study exhibit considerable dietary overlap (at both inter‐ and intraspecific levels), indicating that diet is not a major driver of variation in cranial morphology within this radiation. However, the stomachs of closed‐canopy females were found to contain more prey items than male stomachs, possibly indicating that females require a greater caloric intake than their male counterparts. 相似文献

A comparison of test statistics for assessing the effects of concomitant variables in survival analysis 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In data analysis involving the proportional-hazards regression model due to Cox (1972, Journal of the Royal Statistical Society, Series B 34, 187-220), the test criteria commonly used for assessing the partial contribution to survival of subsets of concomitant variables are the classical likelihood ratio (LR) and Wald statistics. This paper presents an investigation of three other test criteria with potentially major computational advantages over the classical tests, especially for stepwise variable selection in moderate to large data sets. The alternative criteria considered are Rao's efficient score statistic and two other score statistics. Under the Cox model, the performance of these tests is examined empirically and compared with the performance of the LR and Wald statistics. Rao's test performs comparably to the LR test in all the cases considered. The performance of the other criteria is competitive in many cases. The use of these statistics is illustrated in a study of coronary artery disease. 相似文献

Preparation and properties of an improved photoaffinity ligand for the N-formyl peptide receptor 总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
A new superior photoaffinity ligand for the N-formyl peptide receptor was prepared by derivatization of N-formyl-Met-Leu-Phe-Lys with a commercially available heterobifunctional crosslinking agent. The product, N-formyl-Met-Leu-Phe-N epsilon-(2-(p-azidosalicylamido)ethyl-1,3'- dithiopropionyl)-Lys was readily synthesized and radiolabelled, and had increased specificity and stability as compared to previously used photoaffinity ligands. The ligand rapidly associated with the receptor with high affinity (Kd = 0.28 nM). Once bound, it was virtually non-dissociable (in the absence of photolysis) in an experimental time-frame (t1/2 (off) = 154 min). The covalent incorporation of the photoaffinity ligand into the receptor upon irradiation was complete within 5 min, minimizing cell damage, and the efficiency of covalent incorporation was approx. 40%. The derivative had enhanced biological activity, having an ED50 for superoxide anion production of 0.23 nM, 27-fold lower than its parent peptide. This derivative of the N-formyl peptide was useful for up to 3 months after radiolabelling, showing a progressive decline in specific activity during storage in the dark at 4 degrees C. The enhanced stability, reproducibility and solubility of the photoaffinity ligand is expected to aid in the purification of the N-formyl peptide receptor and will prove a useful tool for analysing receptor-mediated processes. 相似文献
