1. Intrinsic competition was compared in three species of braconid wasps, the solitary Meteorus pulchricornis Wesmael, and the gregarious Cotesia kariyai (Watanabe) and Cotesia ruficrus Haliday in caterpillars of their common host, the armyworm Mythimna separata Walker. Competition was determined in pair‐wise contests consisting of simultaneous and subsequent parasitisms at various time intervals between the first and second attacks (<1, 24, 48, 72, and 96 h). 2. The experiment revealed that the solitary M. pulchricornis parasitoid was generally superior over the other two gregarious Cotesia species, although, in some cases C. kariyai out‐competed M. pulchricornis when ovipositing first. In contrast, irrespective of the time interval between parasitism and multiparasitism, C. ruficrus always lost in competition with M. pulchricornis. 3. Remarkably, both C. kariyai and C. ruficrus occasionally emerged from the same multiparasitised caterpillar when the time interval between the first and second attacks was small. However, cumulative brood sizes of both species were generally less than when C. kariyai and C. ruficrus developed alone, suggesting that some competition did occur between these two species. 4. Inter‐specific ‘resource sharing’ amongst parasitoid larvae has rarely been described in the literature. In the present study, the conditions in which ‘resource sharing’ in parasitoids can evolve are discussed. Further, we describe differing host usage strategies in parasitoids and how these can affect the outcome of aggressive larval competition.  相似文献

All extant populations of Hebe speciosa (Plantaginaceae), a threatened endemic New Zealand shrub, were investigated using the amplified fragment length polymorphism technique (AFLP). Genetic diversity indices varied significantly among geographical regions and were positively correlated with population size. Among-population genetic differentiation was high (mean pairwise ΦST = 0.47), implying complex historical relationships between disjunct populations and negligible contemporary gene flow. Southern populations exhibited extremely low genetic diversity relative to those found in Northland, suggesting that these populations may be more recent in origin. Patterns of genetic relationship among some populations indicate pre-European Māori dispersal and cultivation. The three northernmost populations were found to contain the majority of the species' remaining genetic diversity and thus, should be a focus for future conservation management. Some southern sites may also be culturally significant as evidence of Māori trade and cultivation of Hebe speciosa .  © 2005 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2005, 149 , 229–239.  相似文献

Female-limited colour polymorphism occurs in many damselfly species, where one morph resembles the male (andromorph) and the other is dissimilar (gynomorph). Explanations for this phenomenon vary, but most assume that andromorphism has arisen in odonates, as a response to excessive male harassment. Here, we quantify the extent of continental and seasonal variation in female morph frequencies in a widely-distributed damselfly and ask whether the spatiotemporal patterns in andromorph frequency can be understood on the basis of sexual harassment theory. We sampled the damselfly, Nehalennia irene (Hagen) among regions across Canada, and at several sites, over the reproductive season, within Central Canada. Andromorph frequencies ranged from 0 to > 90% across Canada. In particular, sites in Western Canada had consistently high andromorph frequencies, whereas andromorph frequencies among Central sites were lower and variable and, among Eastern sites, were lower still (except one site) and relatively invariant. For populations in Central Canada, both andromorph frequencies and population densities varied significantly over time, reaching a peak mid-season. As expected, morph frequency covaried significantly with estimates of male harassment in some cases, but estimates of male harassment did not consistently account for variation in morph frequencies within all regions. Additional factors such as genetic drift may influence morph frequency at the edge of a species' range. Future work also should test, and attempt to explain causation, for seasonal variation in morph frequency.  © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 90 , 501–508.  相似文献

1. River restoration projects usually aim at improving the physical habitat for aquatic organisms. The extent to which biogeochemical processes and microbial activities are intensified in restored river reaches remains uncertain. 2. Here, we investigated the relationships between the distribution and composition of organic carbon (OC), bacterial secondary carbon production and extracellular enzymatic activity (EEA) in the ground water below a restored riparian section of the River Thur, Switzerland, relative to a channelised section. The spatiotemporal variability in the stable C isotopic ratio, dissolved OC polydispersity (the distribution of molecular mass in a mixture of molecules) as well as bacterial abundance, EEA and secondary production were investigated in different process zones. 3. At high river discharge, humic as well as low molecular weight amphiphilic substances infiltrated into the subsurface in a zone dominated by the pioneer plants Salix viminalis (willow bush). Concurrently, bacterial abundance, EEA and secondary carbon production increased at this location. 4. The willow plants leached bioavailable substrates into the ground water when the water table was high. The flood‐driven soil–groundwater coupling stimulated EEA and bacterial secondary production of the suspended groundwater bacterial community. 5. Establishing riparian habitat diversity adds hot spots of OC inputs during flood events, potentially providing valuable ecosystem services (e.g. degradation of organic pollutants) that accompany.  相似文献

Abstract We have begun a long-term ecological research project to address questions about the impact of multiple disturbances on the species richness of communities and whether multiple disturbances are additive or interactive. A protected water catchment area was chosen, which is subjected to fires, sand mining and clearing, and for which detailed records are available. The study area, at Tomago (32°52′S, 151°45′E), has forest, woodland, shrubland and swamp on a sand substrate, with the vegetated dunes forming part of a coastal embayment. Forty-four sites were located in forested areas that had undergone disturbance by either fire, sand mining or clearing. Sites of each disturbance type were grouped into four age classes: less than 1 year since disturbance, nominally 1991; 5 years, nominally 1986; 11 years, nominally 1980; and 17 years, nominally 1974. A set of burned sites, with the time of the last fire matched to the times of the other disturbances, was used as the control response. In this paper we describe the study area and sites, then examine the effects of each single disturbance on vegetation structure. Canopy cover increased with time and type of disturbance, with 17 year old cleared or mined sites similar to the cover of 11 year old burned sites. In the first two years after disturbance, burned sites had significantly more understorey vegetation than cleared or mined sites, but by 5 years all three were similar. The data presented here show that regeneration of mined sites at Tomago is substantially slower than regeneration following disturbance by fire, with the regeneration of cleared sites intermediate but closer to mining than fire. After 17 years regeneration, cleared and sand mined sites had not returned to the vegetation structure of the pre-disturbance state. Understorey height and the amount of vegetation on cleared or mined sites have not achieved the levels in the original forest, although canopy cover did seem to have reached pre-disturbance levels. Current rehabilitation techniques are more sophisticated than those used 17 years ago and continued monitoring of sites currently being rehabilitated may show a faster return to pre-disturbance states. Having established the hierarchy and nature of the response to each single disturbance here, we are now in a position to investigate the impact of multiple disturbances.  相似文献

Contemporary climate change is expected to affect the distributions of most species, but the nature, tempo, and mechanics of contemporary range shifts are still largely speculative. Here, we use fine‐scale distributional records developed over the past Century, combined with spatially comprehensive microclimatic data, to demonstrate a dramatic shift in the range of a climate‐sensitive mammal and to infer the increasingly important role of climate in local extinctions of this species across a 38.2 million‐ha area. Changes in the distribution of the American pika (Ochotona princeps) throughout the Great Basin ecoregion were characterized using records from 1898–2008, revealing a nearly five‐fold increase in the rate of local extinction and an 11‐fold increase in the rate of upslope range retraction during the last ten years, compared with during the 20th Century. Four of ten local pika extinctions have occurred since 1999, and across this ecoregion the low‐elevation range boundary for this species is now moving upslope at an average rate of about 145 m per decade. The rapid, ecoregional range shift of this small, talus‐dwelling species stands in remarkable contrast with the dynamics and determinants of endangerment previously observed for most terrestrial species, and to earlier extinction determinants for O. princeps in this region. Further investigation of widely distributed species will clarify rates at which biotic response to environmental change is occurring, and how factors driving that change are evolving in different portions of the earth.  相似文献

Sex allocation by simultaneous hermaphrodites is theoretically influenced by selfing rate, which is in turn influenced by the benefits of enhanced genomic transmission and reproductive assurance relative to the cost of inbreeding depression. The experimental investigation of these influences in seed plants has a rich pedigree, yet although such an approach is equally relevant to colonial invertebrates, which globally dominate subtidal communities on firm substrata, such studies have been scarce. We reared self‐compatible genets of the marine bryozoan Celleporella hyalina s.l. in the presence and absence of allosperm, and used molecular genetic markers for paternity analysis of progeny to test theoretical predictions that: (1) genets from focal populations with high selfing rates show less inbreeding depression than from focal populations with low selfing rates; (2) genets whose selfed progeny show inbreeding depression prefer outcross sperm (allosperm); and (3) genets bias sex allocation toward female function when reared in reproductive isolation. Offspring survivorship and paternity analysis were used to estimate levels of inbreeding depression and preference for outcrossing or selfing. Sex allocation was assessed by counting male and female zooids. As predicted, inbreeding depression was severe in selfed progeny of genets derived from the populations with low self‐compatibility rates, but, with one exception, was not detected in selfed progeny of genets derived from the populations with higher self‐compatibility rates. Also, as predicted, genets whose selfed progeny showed inbreeding depression preferred outcrossing, and a genet whose selfed progeny did not show inbreeding depression preferred selfing. Contrary to prediction, sex allocation in the majority of genets was not influenced by reproductive isolation. Lack of economy of male function may reflect the over‐riding influence of allosperm‐competition in typically dense breeding populations offering good opportunity for outcrossing. We suggest that hermaphroditism may be a plesiomorphic character of the crown group Bryozoa, prevented by phylogenetic constraint from being replaced by gonochorism and therefore not necessarily adaptive in all extant clades. © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2009, 98 , 519–531.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Eclosion in Lucilia cuprina (Wiedemann) occurs near dawn. The rhythm of eclosion persists in both darkness and constant light of high intensity (490μW cm-2) with a period close to 24h. The sensitivity to light of the circadian clock controlling eclosion varies greatly according to the stage of the life cycle. During larval life the free running rhythm in darkness can be phase shifted by light pulses of 100μW cm-2 intensity, with the transition from a Type 1 phase response curve to a Type 0, occurring with pulses of between 1 and 8h. Extending the last light period of LD to 24 h followed by constant darkness resets the phase of the rhythm by 12h, a transition from constant light to constant darkness initiates rhythmicity in flies made arrhythmic by being reared from eggs collected from adults maintained in constant light. After pupariation, the rhythm is relatively insensitive to light. Rhythmicity is sometimes induced by a transition from constant light to constant darkness, but the phase of the rhythm is not shifted by extending the last light period of LD before entering constant darkness. Repeated LD cycles applied after pupariation initiate and entrain the rhythm.  相似文献

We investigated secondary dispersal of propagules of Erodiophyllum elderi (Asteraceae), a short‐lived perennial plant growing in small patches in the arid lands of southern Australia. In spite of its importance for population dynamics, secondary dispersal is a little understood process. We monitored the dispersal of 2280 large woody capitula (seed heads) released in six E. elderi patches for 9 months. Colour‐coded seed heads were located at night using UV light and their distance and direction from the release point were measured. Over the 9‐month period, more seed heads moved, and those that did, moved further in areas with high herbivore activity. Overall dispersal distance across the ground was limited to less than 30 m. Dispersal patterns were related to the topographical slope at the release site: seed heads moved further, and more dispersed on steeper slopes unless the steep slopes had sandy soil in which case seed heads were buried, caught or there was reduced sheet water flow limiting their dispersal potential. After several months, seed head dispersal virtually ceased as seed heads became stuck in the debris and soil after heavy rains or further dispersal became unlikely when seed heads reached locally low‐lying areas. Secondary dispersal patterns suggest two distinctly different influences associated with the presence of herbivores: the direct movement of seed heads by trampling from sheep (an introduced herbivore) and the indirect effect of a reduced standing biomass from grazing. Reduced vegetation cover allows seed head redistribution via sheet water flow during large rainfall events.  相似文献

The thylakoid membranes of isolated Euglena chloroplasts wereseparated into two fractions by aqueous two-phase-partitioning(mixture of dextran 500 and poly(ethylene glycol) 4000) followingpress disruption. These two fractions differ in many respectsduring most of the cell cycle of this alga in comparison withthe thylakoid characteristics of higher plants or green algae. The amount of thylakoid membranes with separation characteristicscomparable with inside-out-vesicles of higher plant chloroplastschanges depending on the cell cycle stage of Euglena gracilis.Photosystems II and I are not restricted to one fraction. Boththylakoid membrane fractions evolve oxygen photosynthetically. When chloroplast differentiation in Euglena gracilis is complete(i.e. at the end of the light-time) the composition and thephotosynthetic efficiency of the two thylakoid fractions aregenerally equal. Photosystem I-related LHCI is present in bothfractions. Photosystem II-related CP29, however, was only detectedin unfractionated thylakoid membranes. The implications forthylakoid organization in Euglena chloroplasts are discussed. Key words: Euglena gracilis, photosystem I, photosystem II, stacking, thylakoids  相似文献
