We studied the interaction of ambient light and plumage colour in four sympatric neotropical manakin species which differ in signal colours and vertical lek placement. We estimated bird conspicuousness by modelling chromatic and achromatic background contrast of signal colours in tetrachromatic colour space. Spectral composition of ambient light varies gradually from the understory to the canopy and may affect where manakins lek. Under the given spatial requirements for their horizontal display flights, manakins place their leks at that position along the vertical gradient where ambient light increases chromatic and/or achromatic contrast of their colour signals against the background and/or within their coloration patterns. This suggests that physical factors can be important for placement of display sites, since they may critically influence the effectiveness and efficiency of conspecific communication. © 2003 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2003, 80 , 647–658.  相似文献

An undescribed organ in Collembola consisting of three eversible sacks in the last abdominal segment was first discovered in Hypogastrura socialis . Immediately prior to jumping the anal sacks become everted and appear as finger-like appendages projecting out of the hind gut. The organ was found in all Hypogastura species available for investigation and in some other primitive genera of the families Hypogastruridae, Brachystomellidae and Neanuridae. In most species, however, the anal sacks were much smaller than those of H. socialis and probably not eversible. The function of the anal sacks is in some way associated with the jumping activity of the animals; possibly as a mechanism to increase jumping efficiency or, more likely, for release of pheromones. Further research is needed to uncover the function of the organ. It is suggested that Abd. VI has been formed by the fusion of the three lobes now constituting the Abd. VI segment and that this fusion resulted in the formation of three post-rectal pockets from which the anal sacks have evolved.  相似文献

In many damselfly species mature females exhibit colour polymorphism: one female morph resembles the conspecific male (androchrome) while the others do not (gynochromes). Hypotheses for the maintenance of such polymorphisms differ mainly as to whether they are based on density- and/or frequency-dependent selection and on the nature of the frequency dependence. We collected lifetime fitness data (individual lifespan, number of copulations and number of ovipositions) for female morphs of the damselfly Ischnura elegans from 15 insectaries differing in population parameters (density, sex ratio and ratio of andro- to gynochromes). Both density and frequency affected a specific set of the studied fitness components. While morph frequency influenced lifespan, sex ratio influenced the number of copulations, and density affected lifespan and the number of ovipositions. Clearly, discrepancies among studies may be generated if the studied fitness components differ. Our final fitness estimate, the number of ovipositions, was only influenced by density, thereby not supporting frequency-based hypotheses. Contrary to expectation under the current density-based hypothesis, androchromes compared to gynochromes had a lower number of ovipositions at high density. SYNOPSIS. Electron microscope observations of a strain of Labyrinthula indicate that the spindle cells glide within a collapsible slime tube rather than on top of it. Three main independent phylogenetic groups within Ginkgoales , consisting of different families, are suggested. It is considered impossible to deduce the genus Ginkgo from any other genus by means of fossil evidence known at present.
The oldest finds of Ginkgo date from the Lower Jurassic. During the Cretaceous, increasing polymorphy in foliar remains indicates the rise of new species. During the Lower Cretaceous there also appears a type of leaf known both as G. adiantoides and as G. paradiantoides. This leaf is from the gross morphological and the anatomical point of view almost identical with the Tertiary and Recent Ginkgo populations, thus making a direct ancestry between the present-day Ginkgo and those of the Lower Cretaceous likely. By Lower Tertiary times a considerable reduction has taken place leaving only one gross morphological type of leaf, that of G. adiantoides. This is suggested to be identical with G. biloba. Although there is no positive evidence, it can be assumed that the final reduction of the genus, to its present-day East Asiatic home, has taken place during the Pleistocene period.  相似文献

The mouse b locus controls black/brown coat coloration. Its product, the b-protein or TRP-1, has significant homology to tyrosinase, and this has led to suggestions that the b-protein is itself a melanogenic enzyme. In order to investigate its function, we have used lines of mouse fibroblasts stably expressing the b-protein. We were unable to con-firm previous reports that the b-protein has tyrosinase or catalase activity, but detected stereospecific dopachrome tautomerase activity in b-protein-expressing fibroblasts. This dopachrome tautomerase binds to Concanavalin A-Sepharose, and the major product of its action on L-dopachrome is 5,6-dihydroxyindole-2-carboxylic acid, as expected for the mammalian enzyme. Since this activity is not present in untransfected fibroblasts we conclude that the b-protein has dopachrome tautomerase activity. Further supporting evidence comes from the analysis of melanin metabolites produced by fibroblasts expressing tyrosinase alone, or in combination with the b-protein. Culture medium from the line expressing both proteins contains significant amounts of methylated carboxylated indoles, such as 6-hydroxy-5-methoxyindole-2-carboxylic acid, which would be expected in cells with an active dopachrome tautomerase. The levels of these compounds in medium from cells expressing tyrosinase alone are approximately 20-fold lower, and not significantly above background. Hence, it appears that the b-protein acts as a dopachrome tautomerase in vivo as well as in vitro.  相似文献

A single male specimen of a new species (†Kinzelbachilla ellenbergeri gen. et sp.n. ) of a new family of the endoparasitic Strepsiptera (†Kinzelbachillidae fam.n.) from Burmese amber is described and evaluated with respect to its systematic placement. Its features come very close to the presumptive groundplan of the order suggested in recent studies. Preserved plesiomorphic features are the following: fully sclerotized head with long coronal suture, small ommatidia not separated by chitinous bridges, absence of microtrichia between ommatidia, eight antennomeres, robust mandibles with dicondylic articulation, galea distinctly developed, free pro‐ and mesotrochanters, slender five‐segmented tarsi without adhesive soles, and equally sclerotized abdominal tergites and sternites. An important character that is not recognizable due to damage is the shape of the metapostnotum. This structure is transverse in the groundplan of Strepsiptera and in †Protoxenos, but elongated and shield‐like in all other known strepsipterans. In a cladistic analyses of 82 characters of adult males and additional characters for females and immatures (scored as unknown for all included fossils) †Kinzelbachilla is placed as sister group of all remaining strepsipterans except for †Protoxenos, followed by †Cretostylops and †Mengea as the third and fourth branches in the stem group, respectively. The position of †Protoxenos as first branch is suggested by three unambiguous apomorphic features of all remaining Strepsiptera, the reduced size of less than 6 mm, mandibles distinctly narrowing distad the basalmost part, and fan‐shaped hindwings which are broader than they are long. The hitherto known fossil stem group strepsipterans do not distinctly narrow the large morphological gap separating this order from its sister group, the Coleoptera. 1. Insects locate mobile resources like prey items or mates using either sit‐and‐wait (‘perching’) or active (‘patrolling’) searching strategies. The sit‐and‐wait strategy can be accompanied by defending and monopolising a site through territorial behaviour. 2. The present study focuses on the territorial perching behaviour in males of the speckled wood butterfly (Pararge aegeria L.). Recent studies suggested that the selection of territories (i.e. sunlit patches on the forest floor) is driven by structural characteristics of the site that affect male visual detection. However, given that adult butterflies are heliothermic organisms and that forests provide a diverse array of light environments, it seems likely that thermal aspects may also be used for territory selection. 3. We tested whether used and unused sunlit patches differed in thermal profile under field conditions in a Belgian woodland. We also used dummy butterflies to quantify variation in operative thoracic temperature and to calculate heating rates within (i.e. different vegetation structures) and between patches. 4. Sunlit patches occupied by a territorial male were larger, and were more frequently characterised by low vegetation structures compared with empty sunlit patches. It took longer to reach optimal thorax temperature (starting from a fixed suboptimal body temperature) in small patches compared with large patches. 5. We suggest that aspects of visual detection need to be combined with thermal aspects to fully understand territory selection in the speckled wood butterfly, as synergetic and/or trade‐off effects of ambient temperature, solar radiation, and canopy/vegetation structure may be involved.  相似文献
