Newcomers acclimatizing to high altitude and adult male Tibetan high altitude natives have increased ventilation relative to sea level natives at sea level. However, Andean and Rocky Mountain high altitude natives have an intermediate level of ventilation lower than that of newcomers and Tibetan high altitude natives although generally higher than that of sea level natives at sea level. Because the reason for the relative hypoventilation of some high altitude native populations was unknown, a study was designed to describe ventilation from adolescence through old age in samples of Tibetan and Andean high altitude natives and to estimate the relative genetic and environmental influences. This paper compares resting ventilation and hypoxic ventilatory response (HVR) of 320 Tibetans 9–82 years of age and 542 Bolivian Aymara 13–94 years of age, native residents at 3,800–4,065 m. Tibetan resting ventilation was roughly 1.5 times higher and Tibetan HVR was roughly double that of Aymara. Greater duration of hypoxia (older age) was not an important source of variation in resting ventilation or HVR in either sample. That is, contrary to previous studies, neither sample acquired hypoventilation in the age ranges under study. Within populations, greater severity of hypoxia (lower percent of oxygen saturation of arterial hemoglobin) was associated with slightly higher resting ventilation among Tibetans and lower resting ventilation and HVR among Aymara women, although the associations accounted for just 2–7% of the variation. Between populations, the Tibetan sample was more hypoxic and had higher resting ventilation and HVR. Other systematic environmental contrasts did not appear to elevate Tibetan or depress Aymara ventilation. There was more intrapopulation genetic variation in these traits in the Tibetan than the Aymara sample. Thirty-five percent of the Tibetan, but none of the Aymara, resting ventilation variance was due to genetic differences among individuals. Thirty-one percent of the Tibetan HVR, but just 21% of the Aymara, HVR variance was due to genetic differences among individuals. Thus there is greater potential for evolutionary change in these traits in the Tibetans. Presently, there are two different ventilation phenotypes among high altitude natives as compared with sea level populations at sea level: lifelong sustained high resting ventilation and a moderate HVR among Tibetans in contrast with a slightly elevated resting ventilation and a low HVR among Aymara. Black-footed ferrets (Mustela nigripes) are both habitat and prey specialists that depend on prairie dogs (Cynomys spp.) for food and utilize prairie dog burrows for refuge. In this study we investigated the effects of captive diet during early development on adult black-footed ferret food preferences. To test the hypothesis that early diet affects the food preferences of adult black-footed ferrets, we exposed 22 kits (divided into three experimental groups) to different quantities of prairie dog in the diet: no prairie dog, prairie dog three times per week, and prairie dog daily during the assumed sensitive period for olfactory imprinting, i.e., between 60–90 postnatal days. At age 5 months, kits were individually tested in a food choice cafeteria trial. Results indicated that higher amounts of prairie dog in the ferrets' early diet led to a higher preference for this food item when ferrets reached adulthood. These results have important implications for black-footed ferret recovery and have been considered in the reintroduction protocol. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Rabies transmitted by wildlife is now the main source of human rabies in the Americas. The common marmoset, Callithrix jacchus, is considered a reservoir of rabies causing sporadic and unpredictable human deaths in Brazil, but the extent of the spillover risk to humans remains unknown. In this study, we described the spatiotemporal dynamics of rabies affecting C. jacchus reported to Brazil’s Ministry of Health passive surveillance system between 2008 and 2020, and combined ecological niche modelling with C. jacchus occurrence data to predict its suitable habitat. Our results show that 67 outbreaks (91 cases) of rabies affecting C. jacchus were reported by 41 municipalities between January 2008 and October 2020, with a mean of 5 outbreaks/year [range: 1–14]. The maximum number of outbreaks and municipalities reporting cases occurred in 2018, coinciding with higher surveillance of primate deaths due to Yellow Fever. A mean of 3 [1–9] new municipalities reported outbreaks yearly, suggesting potential spatial expansions of the C. jacchus variant in northeastern Brazil and emerging rabies spillover from vampire bat Desmodus rotundus to C. jacchus in the north and south. Outbreaks were concentrated in the states of Ceará (72%) and Pernambuco (16%) up to 2012, but are now reported in Piauí since 2013, in Bahia since 2017 (D. rotundus’ antigenic variant, AgV3) and in Rio de Janeiro since 2019 (AgV3). Besides confirming suitable habitat for this primate in the northeast and the east coast of Brazil, our Maximum Entropy model also predicted suitable habitat on the north and the west states of the country but predicted low habitat suitability among inland municipalities of the Caatinga biome reporting rabies. Our findings revealed new areas reporting rabies infecting C. jacchus, highlighting the need to implement strategies limiting spillover to humans and to better understand the drivers of C. jacchus rabies dynamics.  相似文献

Edges resulting from forest clear-cutting and treefall gaps can affect plant populations and consequently the distribution of species across landscapes. These two types of disturbance might interact to exacerbate or ameliorate “edge effects”, a rarely tested possibility. We focused on the effects of distance from forest edge (0–10, 30–40, 60–70, and 190–200 m) and habitat within forest fragments (treefall gaps and intact forest) on the early stages of development of Palicourea gibbosa and Faramea affinis, two common shrubs of montane forests in southwest Colombia. Seed germination and seedling growth did not change with distance from forest edge. Within forest fragments, however, seed germination and seedling growth were higher in treefall gaps than in intact forest understory for both species. In contrast, seed predation was influenced by distance from forest edge and in P gibbosa it depended on habitat. Seed predation was highest in the forest interior (190–200 m from forest edge) and in P. gibbosa this was true only in treefall gap habitats. These results suggest that animal mediated processes such as post-dispersal seed predation are more likely than physiological processes to be affected by anthropogenic edges. Our results provide some evidence that treefall gaps may interact with “edge effects”, however, they are inconclusive as to whether they exacerbate or ameliorate them.
