The annual reproductive cycle of the male little brown bat, in contrast to seasonal reproductive patterns of other mammals, is differentiated by an asynchronous recrudescence of the testis and the accessory reproductive glands. Spermatogenesis occurs during the summer, whereas fully stimulated accessory organs, stored epididymal spermatozoa, and sexual behavior are expressed later during a mating period that extends, albeit interrupted by hibernation, from late summer until early spring. To investigate whether changes in high affinity androgen-binding activity in the circulation are related to the delayed renewal of the accessory organs, plasma sex steroid-binding protein (SBP) and total testosterone (T) levels were measured throughout the year. From these data and determinations of association constants for T binding to SBP and albumin at both hibernating (4 degrees C) and active (40 degrees C) temperatures, estimates of the unbound ("free") and albumin-bound T fractions were made and correlated with changes in the accessory reproductive organs. Plasma SBP concentrations (mean +/- SEM) exhibited wide seasonal fluctuations: they were baseline in May (10 +/- 2 nM) following spring arousal, increased dramatically in June (184 +/- 24 nM), and reached peak levels in early July (262 +/- 29 nM), where they remained until August. In late August they began to fall (104 +/- 23 nM) and then returned to baseline during the hibernation period (October-April). Although total T levels were also elevated in June, it appeared that the unbound ("free") and the unbound plus albumin-bound T fractions did not increase until late July. Since the accessory gland weights did not begin to increase until late July as well, it was concluded that increases in the unbound and albumin-bound T fractions may be an important factor in the recrudescence of the accessories and that increased SBP activity in early summer may play a role in the regression and delayed renewal of these organs. However, what factor(s) maintain the accessory glands, epididymal spermatozoa, and sexual behavior during the breeding and hibernation periods when all T fractions were low are, as yet, undetermined.  相似文献

Immature male little brown bats were aroused prematurely from their first hibernation and fed ad libitum (Group AL) or given a restricted diet (Group FR). All animals were weighed daily and the food intake of Group FR males was restricted to maintain their body weights at or near initial post-arousal values (5.3-6.8 g). The average body weights of Group AL males increased during the first week after arousal and then stabilized at a level which was 20% higher than those of Group FR males. The post-arousal induction of plasma SBP was similar in Groups FR and AL: plasma SBP activity was significantly increased 1 week after arousal and by 3 weeks had reached levels which were more than 10-fold higher than those of immature hibernating males which served as controls. Although food restriction had no effect on plasma SBP levels, it did inhibit reproductive development. Arousal-induced increases in testicular and epididymal (head/body) weights in Group FR males were less than 50% of those in Group AL males. However, histological examination of the testes revealed similar degrees of spermatogenic activation in both groups. Plasma testosterone concentrations were increased markedly in Groups FR and AL; values were generally lower in Group FR but wide individual variations were observed. Despite these elevated peripheral testosterone values, the accessory sex glands in both groups remained unstimulated.  相似文献

We measured the amount of N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, B, Mn, Na, Sr, Cu and Zn in above- and belowground parts of cattails (Typha latifolia L.) every 2 weeks during the growing season (April–October) in plants growing in a marsh on the shore of Lake Mendota, Wisconsin. Elements differed considerably in their distribution between above- and belowground parts and the amount of apparent exchange between parts. The ratio of the amount of an element in aboveground plant parts to that belowground (A:B) was between 1:1 and 2:1 for most elements, as compared with the 2.2:1 ratio of biomass. The maximum amounts of Fe and Zn belowground exceeded their aboveground maxima, while K, Ca and Mn had A:B ratios greater than 2:1. N, P and K in belowground plant parts decreased considerably during the spring, and belowground decreases were large enough to be potentially important sources of these elements for shoot growth. Belowground stores of Ca, Mg, Mn, Na and Sr decreased little in the spring and do not function as reserves.  相似文献

Previous research established a relationship between circulating sulfoconjugated norepinephrine (NE-SO4) and oxygen consumption at various exercise intensities. In this study, the stability of the NE-SO4 response was examined during sustained exercise at a constant relative intensity. Seven trained men bicycled at 78 +/- 3% of their maximal O2 consumption for 28 min and then rested on the ergometer for a comparable duration. After a 30-min rest, plasma samples were collected through an indwelling catheter at 7-min intervals during the exercise and recovery periods. Free NE and epinephrine increased sixfold during exercise. These changes were accompanied by increases in sulfoconjugated catecholamines, but only NE-SO4 achieved statistical significance (rest, 712 +/- 602; exercise, 1,329 +/- 1,163 pg/ml). This occurred at three collection periods (14, 21, and 28 min). Approximately 35, 52, and 95% of NE, epinephrine, and dopamine, respectively, existed as sulfoconjugated during exercise. Subject variation was present in the sulfoconjugated catecholamine response that could not be attributed to corresponding differences in circulating free catecholamine release. These findings implicate blood flow as a factor in the sulfoconjugation of NE, but not epinephrine or dopamine.  相似文献

Seven day old wheat and maize seedlings were exposed to 1300 or 2000 microeinsteins per square meter per second photosynthetically active radiation in CO2-free air for 3 hours with either 1% O2 in N2 or N2-only and then returned to normal air of 340 microliters per liter CO2, 21% O2 in N2. Activity of the ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase and amount of the substrate, ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate, were measured during and following the CO2-free treatments as was photosynthetic CO2 fixation. Photoinhibition of photosynthesis was observed only with wheat seedlings following the N2 only treatment. During the CO2-free treatments, the levels of RuBP rose during all experiments except when wheat was photoinhibited. The activity of the ribulose bisphophate carboxylase, measured directly upon grinding the leaves, declined during the CO2-free conditions. The carboxylase total activity increased in minutes in the leaf during and following the CO2-free treatments. The specific activities of the wheat carboxylase went from 0.16 to 1.06 micromoles CO2 fixed per milligram protein per minute while the maize carboxylase varied from 0.05 to 0.36 micromole CO2 fixed per millogram protein per minute. This suggests that in these seedlings considerable inactive carboxylase must be stored in a form not activatable in extracts by CO2 and Mg2+. Possible mechanisms of regulation of photosynthesis by the ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase must consider not only the amount of active enzyme, but the amount of enzyme which the plant can make activatable upon demand.  相似文献

Plasma steroid binding was examined in samples obtained from seven species of bats representing four different families. A specific sex steroid-binding protein (SBP) was identified by steady-state polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis in representatives of two families, the phyllostomids and the vespertilionids. In these species, as in primates, SBP not only exhibited high affinity for the androgens testosterone and dihydrotestosterone (DHT), but also for estradiol. A specific SBP was not identified in the tropical American vampire bat or in the two species of pteropodids examined. In all species examined, except for the vampire bat, a specific corticosteroid-binding globulin (CBG) was also identified. In addition to binding glucocorticoids, CBG in these species appeared to bind androgens as well.  相似文献

Pulmonary rapidly-adapting-receptors (RARs) are sensory nerve endings whose afferent fibers can be recorded in the vagus nerve. RARs may play a role in reflex bronchoconstriction as seen in anaphylaxis. They can be stimulated by chemical mediators of anaphylaxis, such as prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α). PGF2α aerosol was administered to saline and bovine serum albumin (BSA)-treated guinea pigs while recording the activity of RARs. PGF2α (250 μg/ml) given for 7–13 minutes increased both tracheal pressure and nerve activity over that produced by saline exposure in untreated guinea pigs. PGF2α administered for three minutes (5–100 μg/ml) increased RAR nerve activity in a dose-related manner in the first five minutes of the experiment only in the BSA treated guinea pigs. Since changes in tracheal pressure did not show a significant dose-response relationship, the RARs responding to PGF2α seemed to be stimulated by a direct mechanism. No correlation was shown between tracheal pressure and RAR nerve activity during PGF2α treatment. Whereas, a significant correlation was found between tracheal pressure and RAR nerve activity during histamine aerosol treatment (r=0.985). Histamine aerosol (1 to 1000 μg/ml, 3 min.) increased intratracheal pressure for 3 out of 4 doses. RAR nerve activity increased significantly only at the highest dose. Therefore, a possible direct effect of PGF2α upon RARs exists while the effect of histamine seems dependent upon changes in airway pressure in the guinea pig.  相似文献
