Characteristics of children presenting with chest pain to a pediatric emergency department.

Chest pain among children is a common complaint in primary care practice. However, the demographic features and treatment of such patients are controversial. We distributed a questionnaire to 336 consecutive patients with a complaint of chest pain seen during 1 year at an urban pediatric emergency department. Such visits represented 0.6% of all emergency encounters; the male:female ratio was 1.0. Physical examination was done in 325 patients. Chest-wall pain was the most common diagnosis (in 28% of cases). Other causes included pulmonary (in 19%), minor traumatic (in 15%), idiopathic (in 12%) and psychogenic (in 5%); miscellaneous causes (in 21%) most often indicated pain referred from the upper respiratory tract and the abdomen. The most common physical finding was chest tenderness (in 41% of cases). Investigations included chest radiography (in 50% of cases), electrocardiography (in 18%) and determination of the hemoglobin concentration and of the leukocyte count (in 13%); the results were rarely positive. Only eight patients (2%) required admission to hospital, and there were no cases of myocardial ischemia. The findings suggest that health care costs may be reduced by more judicious use of investigations. We conclude that chest pain is an uncommon and usually benign complaint in the pediatric emergency department. Most causes are evident on careful physical examination.     

Effects of spaceflight on rat humerus geometry, biomechanics, and biochemistry

The effects of a 12.5-day spaceflight (Cosmos 1887 biosatellite) on the geometric, biomechanical, and biochemical characteristics of humeri of male specific pathogen-free rats were examined. Humeri of age-matched basal control, synchronous control, and vivarium control rats were contrasted with the flight bones to examine the influence of growth and space environment on bone development. Lack of humerus longitudinal growth occurred during the 12.5 days in spaceflight. In addition, the normal mid-diaphysial periosteal appositional growth was affected; compared with their controls, the spaceflight humeri had less cortical cross-sectional area, smaller periosteal circumferences, smaller anterior-posterior periosteal diameters, and smaller second moments of area with respect to the bending and nonbending axes. The flexural rigidity of the flight humeri was comparable to that of the younger basal control rats and significantly less than that of the synchronous and vivarium controls; the elastic moduli of all four groups, nonetheless, were not significantly different. Generally, the matrix biochemistry of the mid-diaphysial cross sections showed no differences among groups. Thus, the spaceflight differences in humeral mechanical strength and flexural rigidity were probably a result of the differences in humeral geometry rather than material properties.     

Developmental regulation of expression of the lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) multigene family during mouse spermatogenesis

Expression of the Lactate Dehydrogenase (LDH) genes during various stages of spermatogenesis was studied by using a combination of Northern blot analyses and in situ hybridization techniques. These studies have indicated that developmentally programmed expression of all three functional LDH genes occurs during differentiation of germ cells. The LDH/C (ldh-3) gene was expressed exclusively during meiosis and spermiogenesis, beginning in leptotene/zygotene spermatocytes and continuing through to the elongated spermatids. LDH/C (ldh-3) gene expression was accompanied by transient expression of the LDH/A (ldh-1) gene in pachytene spermatocytes and round spermatids. The LDH/B (ldh-2) gene was expressed mainly in Sertoli and spermatogonial cells. By using somatic cell hybrids, the LDH/C (ldh-3) gene has been mapped to mouse chromosome 7, establishing that it is syntenic with the LDH/A (ldh-1) gene locus. Experimental observations made in this study provide new insight into the order and sequence of events involved in the regulation of gene expression of the LDH gene family during spermatogenesis.

SC9-4和棕榈油的比较分析研究

SC_9-4是以植物油为原料研制成功的一种高速冷轧工艺润滑油。经武钢高速冷轧机轧制性能鉴定,它的高速轧制性能优于棕榈油。我们使用高效液相色谱比较分析鉴定了SC_9-4和棕榈油的甘油三酯组成。分析结果:SC_9-4:的主要甘油三酯是POP(42.8％)和PPP(14.6％),而棕榈油的主要甘油三酯是POP(31.3％)、POO(20.1％)、PLP(12.2％)和PLO(11.6％)。我们初步探讨甘油三酯组成与轧制性能关系认为,SC_9-4的高速轧制性能优于棕榈油,可能是和SC_9-4含PPP、PPS和PSS的含量(18.8％)高于棕榈油(9.9％)有关。     

Expression of glutathione peroxidase I gene in selenium-deficient rats.

We have characterized a cDNA pGPX1211 encoding rat glutathione peroxidase I. The selenocysteine in the protein corresponded to a TGA codon in the coding region of the cDNA, similar to earlier findings in mouse and human genes, and a gene encoding the formate dehydrogenase from E. coli, another selenoenzyme. The rat GSH peroxidase I has a calculated subunit molecular weight of 22,155 daltons and shares 95% and 86% sequence homology with the mouse and human subunits, respectively. The 3'-noncoding sequence (greater than 930 bp) in pGPX1211 is much longer than that of the human sequences. We found that glutathione peroxidase I mRNA, but not the polypeptide, was expressed under nutritional stress of selenium deficiency where no glutathione peroxidase I activity can be detected. The failure of detecting any apoprotein for the glutathione peroxidase I under selenium deficiency and results published from other laboratories supports the proposal that selenium may be incorporated into the glutathione peroxidase I co-translationally.
