Introduction
Body mass index is known to be positively associated with an increased risk of adenocarcinomas of the esophagus, yet there is there limited evidence on whether physical activity or sedentary behavior affects risk of histology- and site-specific upper gastrointestinal cancers. We used the NIH-AARP Diet and Health Study to assess these exposures in relation to esophageal adenocarcinoma (EA), esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), gastric cardia adenocarcinoma (GCA), and gastric non-cardia adenocarcinoma (GNCA).Methods
Self-administered questionnaires were used to elicit physical activity and sedentary behavior exposures at various age periods. Cohort members were followed via linkage to the US Postal Service National Change of Address database, the Social Security Administration Death Master File, and the National Death Index. Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to estimate hazard ratios (HR) and 95 percent confidence intervals (95%CI)Results
During 4.8 million person years, there were a total of 215 incident ESCCs, 631 EAs, 453 GCAs, and 501 GNCAs for analysis. Strenuous physical activity in the last 12 months (HR>5 times/week vs. never=0.58, 95%CI: 0.39, 0.88) and typical physical activity and sports during ages 15–18 years (p for trend=0.01) were each inversely associated with GNCA risk. Increased sedentary behavior was inversely associated with EA (HR5–6 hrs/day vs. <1 hr=0.57, 95%CI: 0.36, 0.92). There was no evidence that BMI was a confounder or effect modifier of any relationship. After adjustment for multiple testing, none of these results were deemed to be statistically significant at p<0.05.Conclusions
We find evidence for an inverse association between physical activity and GNCA risk. Associations between body mass index and adenocarcinomas of the esophagus do not appear to be related to physical activity and sedentary behavior. 相似文献3.
The biocontrol properties of Trichoderma species are well documented, but their effectiveness in antagonism of the problematic Sclerotium cepivorum, the causal agent of white rot in Allium species, appears limited with reports of significant control only relating to deliberately-mutated strains of Trichoderma. Our previous studies have indicated the possibility of using selected naturally-occurring strains of the antagonist in the suppression of other diseases; now in vitro and controlled environment in vivo studies have indicated that a degree of control of Onion White Rot is possible, and that the selected antagonist strains can be used in integrated treatments with Iprodione to good effect. The possible value of such treatments is considered in light of other approaches to the suppression of this continuing problem. 相似文献

Utility of the white gene in estimating phylogenetic relationships among mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The utility of a nuclear protein-coding gene for reconstructing
phylogenetic relationships within the family Culicidae was explored.
Relationships among 13 species representing three subfamilies and nine
genera of Culicidae were analyzed using a 762-bp fragment of coding
sequence from the eye color gene, white. Outgroups for the study were two
species from the sister group Chaoboridae. Sequences were determined from
clone PCR products amplified from genomic DNA, and aligned following
conceptual intron splicing and amino acid translation. Third codon
positions were characterized by high levels of divergence and biased
nucleotide composition, the intensity and direction of which varied among
taxa. Equal weighting of all characters resulted in parsimony and
neighboring-joining trees at odds with the generally accepted phylogenetic
hypothesis based on morphology and rDNA sequences. The application of
differential weighting schemes recovered the traditional hypothesis, in
which the subfamily Anophelinae formed the basal clade. The subfamily
Toxorhynchitinae occupied an intermediate position, and was a sister group
to the subfamily Culicinae. Within Culicinae, the genera Sabethes and
Tripteroides formed an ancestral clade, while the Culex-Deinocerites and
Aedes- Haemagogus clades occupied increasingly derived positions in the
molecular phylogeny. An intron present in the Culicinae- Toxorhynchitinae
lineage and one outgroup taxon was absent in the basal Anophelinae lineage
and the second outgroup taxon, suggesting that intron insertions or
deletions may not always be reliable systematic characters.

The knee meniscus, a fibrocartilaginous tissue located in the knee joint, is characterized by heterogeneity in extracellular matrix and biomechanical properties. To recreate these properties using a tissue engineering approach, co‐cultures of meniscus cells (MCs) and articular chondrocytes (ACs) were seeded in varying ratios (100:0, 75:25, 50:50, 25:75, and 0:100) on poly‐L ‐lactic acid (PLLA) scaffolds and cultured in serum‐free medium for 4 weeks. Histological, biochemical, and biomechanical tests were used to assess constructs at the end time point. Strong staining for collagen and glycosaminoglycan (GAG) was observed in all groups. Constructs with 100% MCs were positive for collagen I and constructs cultured with 100% ACs were positive for collagen II, while a mixture of collagen I and II was observed in other co‐culture groups. Total collagen and GAG per construct increased as the percentage of ACs increased (27 ± 8 µg, 0% AC to 45 ± 8 µg, 100% ACs for collagen and 12 ± 4 µg, 0% ACs to 40 ± 5 µg, 100% ACs for GAG). Compressive modulus (instantaneous and relaxation modulus) of the constructs was significantly higher in the 100% ACs group (63 ± 12 and 22 ± 9 kPa, respectively) when compared to groups with higher percentage of MCs. No differences in tensile properties were noted among groups. Specific co‐culture ratios were identified mimicking the GAG/DW of the inner (0:100, 25:75, and 50:50) and outer regions (100:0) of the meniscus. Overall, it was demonstrated that co‐culturing MCs and ACs on PLLA scaffolds results in functional tissue engineered meniscus constructs with a spectrum of biochemical and biomechanical properties.
