Externalization of aminophospholipids in platelet liposome bilayers by supplementation with sphingomyelin

Negatively charged phospholipids are mainly located on the inner leaflet of platelet liposomes. Using a specific reagent for amino groups, trinitrobenzenesulfanilic acid, we have shown that in large artificial vesicles prepared with total lipids from sheep platelets supplemented with increased amounts of exogenous sphingomyelin, an alteration in the amino-phospholipid topology occurs, with a progressive appearance of these lipid species -in particular phosphatidylserine- in the outer membrane bilayer.     

In vitro propagation of mature trees of Alnus incana (L.) Moench.

Mature trees of European grey alder (Alnus incana) were micropropagated on a modified MS medium containing 2.5 M BA, 6.2 mM (500 mg l^-1) NH₄NO₃ and 1.5% glucose. Prior to in vitro culture, mature scions were multiplied through grafting and cutting techniques. Shoot tips from cuttings were established in vitro. After six months of culture, shoots were rooted either in vitro or in vivo and plantlets were transferred to greenhouse conditions.     

ent-Kaurene Synthesis and Endogenous Levels of Gibberellins in a Shoot Forming Tobacco Crown Gall Tissue

The in vitro ent-Mcaurene synthesizing capacity, as well asthe endogenous GA content of shoot-forming tobacco crown gallsinduced by a nopaline-type Ti plasmid, was studied. For determinationof the ent-kaurene synthesizing capacity, an HPLC procedurepreceded by sample clean-up was used and the GA content wasexamined by GC-SIM. Kaurene synthesis reached a maximum at thebeginning of the logarithmic phase of growth. There was a clearcorrelation between the ent-kaurene synthesizing capacity andthe content of C₂₀-GAs. It seems that gibberellin synthesisis related to growth and development of the tissue. The natureof the GAs identified suggests, that the GA metabolism mightbe an unusual one. Purification and partial characterization of multiple bromoperoxidases from Streptomyces griseus

The presence of multiple bromoperoxidases in extracts of Streptomyces griseus Tü 6 was detected. The enzyme pattern varied with the age of the culture. A haem-type bromoperoxidase (BPO 2) was always present. Additionally three nonhaem-type bromoperoxidases (BPO 1a, 1b and 3) were detected and purified to homogeneity. The Mr of non-denatured BPO 1a was 70,000 +/- 10,000 and those of BPO 1b and 3 were 90,000 +/- 5000. BPO 1a and 1b were dimers with subunit Mr values of 34,000 and 43,000, respectively. BPO 3 was a trimer with a subunit Mr of 31,000. The enzymes differed in their isoelectric points, heat stability, and Km values. In immunodiffusion experiments BPO 1a and 3 showed partial identity with the nonhaem-type bromoperoxidase from Streptomyces aureofaciens. The nonhaem-type BPO 1a, 1b and 3 had neither peroxidase nor catalase activity.

Between June 1984 and December 1986, 35 patients with acute myocardial infarction received streptokinase intravenously within 3 hours after the beginning of chest pain and underwent percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) either immediately (in 2 cases) or 1 to 19 (mean 4.4) days later (in 33). The rate of successful PTCA was 89%. Reocclusion occurred in one patient. The mean percentage of stenosis decreased from 86% to 11%. The mean trans-stenotic gradient was reduced from 41 to 11 mm Hg. The results suggest that in patients whose condition is stable, PTCA performed a few days after thrombolysis is a valuable alternative to more aggressive treatment with immediate PTCA.     

QALYs, age and fairness

... We can therefore conclude that either we should go for equality; and in that case QALYs are unfair because they haven't got enough of an ageist bias. Or we should accept consequentialism; and in that case QALYs have just the right sort of ageist bias. No plausible case can, however, be made for the claim that QALYs have an unfair bias against old people. Other things being equal we ought when distributing resources essential for survival favour the young. This ethical claim can be supported both by reference to equality (the life-time-view) and by reference to consequentialism (and the premises that resources generally will be more useful when given to young people).     

Age and growth of tarpon,Megalops atlanticus,larvae in the eastern Gulf of Mexico,with notes on relative abundance and probable spawning areas

Synopsis Leptocephali were collected in June 1981 and July 1989 over the continental shelf and slope of the Florida west coast. Tarpon larvae ranged 5.5–24.4 mm standard length (SL) and were the second most abundant leptocephalus species. Sagittae examined with compound microscopes and scanning electron microscopy had increments that were presumed to be formed daily. Increment counts made using the two microscopic techniques were not significantly different. Estimated ages ranged 2–25 days with a growth rate (± standard error) of 0.92 ± 0.04 mm d^–1 The least squares linear regression equation SL = 2.78 + 0.92 (age in days) best described the relationship between estimated age and length. Adult tarpon appear to undergo a substantial spawning migration from inshore areas frequented during spring and summer to offshore spawning grounds. Spawning occurs during May, June, and July, although the spawning season may be of greater duration.     

Identification and characterization of a luteinizing hormone/chorionic gonadotropin (LH/CG) receptor precursor in a human kidney cell line stably transfected with the rat luteal LH/CG receptor complementary DNA.

It is well established that the LH/CG receptor expressed in gonadal cells is an 85- to 92-kilodalton (kDa) glycoprotein. Additionally, however, a number of reports have noted the existence of other putative receptor species, but few attempts have been made to characterize these variant receptor species. A cell line [293L(wt1)] had previously been isolated which expresses large numbers of high affinity cell surface LH/CG receptors. Visualization of the LH/CG receptor species expressed in these cells and in rat luteal cells using ligand blots revealed 85- and 90-kDa LH/CG receptors, respectively, while immunoblots revealed another 68-kDa glycoprotein receptor in both cell types. The presence of both the 85- and 68-kDa receptor species was confirmed using immunoprecipitation and affinity purification of metabolically labeled 293L(wt1) cells. Enzymatic deglycosylations established that the 85-kDa receptor is a sialoprotein, while the 68-kDa species contains exposed high mannose residues. Protease digestion before LH/CG receptor immunoprecipitations localized the 85-kDa receptor on the plasma membrane, while the 68-kDa receptor was shown to be located intracellularly. Pulse-chase experiments were then used to positively establish that the 68-kDa receptor protein is actually a precursor of the 85-kDa LH/CG receptor species.
