Dihydroisocoumarins and phthalide from wood samples infested by fungi

Wood samples, infested by fungi during storage, were shown to contain, besides the known 5-methyl-mellein, additional (3R)-8-hydroxy-3-methyl-3,4-dihydroisocoumarins substituted by 7-methyl, 5-formyl, 5-carboxy, 5-hydroxy, 5-methoxy, 6-methoxy-5-methyl and 6,7-dimethoxy-5-methyl groups, as well as 6-formyl-7-hydroxy-5-methoxy-4-methylphthalide. Several 2-methylchromanones were synthesized in order to show that this class of compounds can be distinguished from 3-methyl-3,4-dihydroisocoumarins by MS.     

Neoflavonoids and the cinnamylphenol kuhlmannistyrene from Machaerium kuhlmannii and M. Nictitans

The trunkwood of Machaerium kuhlmannii contains methyl palmitate, 3-O-acetyloleanolic acid and sitosterol; the benzene derivatives 2,3-dimethoxyphenol, 2,6-dimethoxyphenol, 2-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenol, 2,3-dimethoxybenzaldehyde and methyl 3-(2-hydroxy-4-methoxyphenyl)-propionate; the isoflavonoids formononetin and (6aS,11aS)-medicarpin; the neoflavonoids (R)-3,4-dimethoxydalbergione, (R)-3,4-dimethoxydalbergiquinol, kuhlmanniquinol [(R)-3-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-3-(5-hydroxy-2,3,4-trimethoxyphenyl)-propene], dalbergin, kuhlmannin (6-hydroxy-7,8-dimethoxy-4-phenylcoumarin) and kuhlmannene (6-hydroxy-7,8-dimethoxy-4-phenylchrom-3-ene), as well as the cinnamylphenol kuhlmannistyrene [Z-1-(5-hydroxy-2,3,4-trimethoxybenzyl)-2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-ethylene]. Five of these compounds, in addition to (R)-4′-hydroxy-3,4-dimethoxydalbergione, were also isolated from a trunkwood extract of M. nictitans. Structural assignments were confirmed by chemical interconversion and by the synthesis of (±)-kuhlmanniquinol.     

The planktonic rotifers of the estuarine lagunar complex of Suape (Pernambuco,Brazil)

We studied spatial and temporal distribution, abundance, diversity, equitability and species associations of the rotifers of the estuarine area of Suape (Pernambuco-Brazil), based on plankton samples collected according to the tidal regime at 11 fixed stations in Suape Bay and the estuaries of Massangana, Tatuoca and Ipojuca Rivers, during February (dry season) and July (rainy season) of 1978. Concurrent hydrological and climatological data were taken. Eight species groups were established. In general, rotifers dominated in the Ipojuca River estuary and stations subject to its influence. Greatest community similarities were observed among nearby stations, during the same tide and season. Hydrological factors influenced the occurrence and distribution of some species, and a close correlation between phytoplankton and rotifers was observed. Pollution in Ipojuca River contributed to diversity.     

Dyes as fungal inhibitors: effect on colony diameter.

The effects of a wide range of concentrations of 13 dyes on the colony diameters of nine fungal strains (including members of the Deuteromycetes and Zygomycetes) were evaluated. Auramine at a concentration of 50 ppm (50 micrograms/ml), methylene blue at a concentration of 500 ppm, gentian violet at a concentration of 5 ppm, and phenol red at a concentration of 50 ppm performed as well as the commonly used dyes dichloran at a concentration of 2 ppm and rose bengal at a concentration of 50 ppm in that they allowed adequate colony development of the Deuteromycetes strains tested and controlled rapidly spreading fungi.     

The effect of silicon on the manganese nutrition of soybeans (Glycine max (L.) Merrill)

Summary Silicon during the early vegetative stage did not affect the oven dry weight of any of the various tissues of the soybean plant. Silicon did, however, decrease the Mn concentration in the youngest fully mature leaf at intermediate levels of Mn. This effect did not occur at the lowest or highest Mn levels. Deficiency and toxicity symptoms were moderated to a slight degree by Si except at the highest level of Mn.     

Spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia, chondroitin sulfate type: a possible defect of PAPS--chondroitin sulfate sulfotransferase in humans

Four patients with an unusual form of spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia excreted in the urine undersulfated chondroitin 6-sulfate (Biochem. Med. $\text{7}$, 415–423, 1973). The sera of these patients show a low activity of PAPS — chondroitin sulfate sulfotransferase, while the undersulfated chondroitin sulfate present in their urine is a much better acceptor of ${}^{35}\text{SO}{}_4$ than standard chondroitin sulfate when they are incubated with [${}^{35}\text{S}$]PAPS and normal sulfotransferases. These results suggest that in these patients the skeletal lesions are secondary to a defect in the synthesis of chondroitin sulfate involving specifically the sulfotransferase activity.     

PERFUSION FOR MYOCARDIAL REVASCULARIZATION WITHOUT AN ARTIFICIAL OXYGENATOR (New Method to Reduce Surgical Morbidity)

Thirteen patients were submitted to direct myocardial revascularization (saphenous vein graft) without the use of an artificial oxygenator. The perfusion was done by a left ventricle-to-aorta bypass and autogenous oxygenation. Most patients had three grafts implanted plus endarterectomy of the distal right coronary artery. There was one hospital death that was apparently not related to the method used. Perfusion time ranged from 45 minutes to 4 hours. Body temperature during perfusion was kept between 25 and 30 degrees C. Perfusion flow was maintained between 25 to 50 ml per kg of body weight per minute. Ischemic, hypothermic cardiac arrest was employed. We demonstrated for the first time that perfusion for this kind of heart surgery could be done with no artificial oxygenators and, apparently, is safer for the patients. There were no bleeding problems even in perfusions as long as 4 hours. There was no respiratory dysfunction, and artificial respiration was used for only 6 to 12 hours. The patients awoke at the end of surgery with no signs or symptoms of central nervous system damage, and vasopressor drugs were rarely used after surgery. Although the experience is very small, it suggests that many postoperative problems, especially those related to bleeding and respiratory dysfunction may be reduced or eliminated by this new method.     

Adenylyl cyclase deficient cr-1 (Crisp) mutant of Neurospora crassa: Cyclic AMP-dependent nutritional deficiencies

The inability to synthesize cyclic AMP drastically affects the nutritional metabolism of Neurospora crassa. The adenylyl cyclase-less mutant cr-1 (crisp) did not utilize several carbon sources, including glycerol, mannitol, arabinose, and casaminoacids. However, in glucose or acetate it grew as well as the wild type. The following evidence suggested that these nutritional deficiencies were a direct result of the cr-1 mutation: (i), in crosses to wild type they segregated together with the crisp morphological marker; (ii), cyclic AMP added to the cr-1 mutant growth medium overcame the nutritional deficiencies; (iii), the cyclic AMP effect was specific for the crisp mutant, for it was not observed with the wild type, nor with a spontaneous glycerol-utilizing cr-1 strain.     

Neolignans from an Aniba species

A benzene extract of the trunk of an Aniba species (Lauraceae) contained benzyl benzoate, benzyl salicylate, sitosterol and the neolignans (2S,3S,3aR)-3a-allyl-5-methoxy-3-methyl-2-piperonyl-2,3,3a,6-tetrahydro-6-oxobenzofuran (burchellin); (2S,3S,3aR)-3a-allyl-5-methoxy-3-methyl-2-veratryl-2,3,3a,6-tetrahydro-6-oxobenzofuran; (2S,3S,3aR)-3a-allyl-5,7-dimethoxy-3-methyl-2-veratryl-2,3,3a,6-tetrahydro-6-oxobenzofuran; (2S,3S,5S)-5-allyl-5-methoxy-3-methyl-2-veratryl-2,3,5,6-tetrahydro-6-oxo-benzofuran; (2R,3R)-7-methoxy-3-methyl-5-propenyl-2-veratryl-2,3-dihydrobenzofuran; rel-(1R,5R,6R,7R,8S)-1-allyl-8-hydroxy-3-methoxy-7-methyl-4-oxo-6-piperonylbicyclo[3,2,1]oct-2-ene (guianin); rel-(1S,5S,6S,7R,8R)-1-allyl-8-hydroxy-3,5-dimethoxy-7-methyl-4-oxo-6-piperonylbicyclo[3,2,1]oct-2-ene; rel-(1S,5S,6S,7R,8R)-8-acetoxy-1-allyl-3-hydroxy-5-methoxy-7-methyl-4-oxo-6-piperonyl-bicyclo[3,2,1]oct-2-ene; rel-1S,5S,6S,7R,8R)-8-acetoxy-3,5-dimethoxy-7-methyl-4-oxo-6-piperonylbicyclo[3,2,1]oct-2-ene; rel-(1R,5S,6R,7R)-1-allyl-3-methoxy-7-methyl-4,8-dioxo-6-piperonylbicyclo[3,2,1]oct-2-ene.
