A mathematical model for the perturbation of a biological oscillator by single and periodic impulses is analyzed. In response to a single stimulus the phase of the oscillator is changed. If the new phase following a stimulus is plotted against the old phase the resulting curve is called the phase transition curve or PTC (Pavlidis, 1973). There are two qualitatively different types of phase resetting. Using the terminology of Winfree (1977, 1980), large perturbations give a type 0 PTC (average slope of the PTC equals zero), whereas small perturbations give a type 1 PTC. The effects of periodic inputs can be analyzed by using the PTC to construct the Poincaré or phase advance map. Over a limited range of stimulation frequency and amplitude, the Poincaré map can be reduced to an interval map possessing a single maximum. Over this range there are period doubling bifurcations as well as chaotic dynamics. Numerical and analytical studies of the Poincaré map show that both phase locked and non-phase locked dynamics occur. We propose that cardiac dysrhythmias may arise from desynchronization of two or more spontaneously oscillating regions of the heart. This hypothesis serves to account for the various forms of atrioventricular (AV) block clinically observed. In particular 22 and 42 AV block can arise by period doubling bifurcations, and intermittent or variable AV block may be due to the complex irregular behavior associated with chaotic dynamics. 相似文献

- Bats in the family Phyllostomidae exhibit great diversity in skull size and morphology that reflects the degree of resource division and ecological overlap in the group. In particular, the subfamily Stenodermatinae has high morphological diversification associated with cranial and mandibular traits that are associated with the ability to consume the full range of available fruits (soft and hard).
- We analyzed craniodental traits and their relationship to the bite force in 343 specimens distributed in seven species of stenodermatine bats with two foraging strategies: nomadic and sedentary frugivory. We evaluated 19 traits related to feeding and bite force in live animals by correcting bite force with body size.
- We used a generalized linear model (GLM) and post hoc tests to determine possible relationships and differences between cranial traits, species, and sex. We also used Blomberg''s K to measure the phylogenetic signal and phylogenetic generalized least‐squares (PGLS) to ensure the phylogenetic independence of the traits.
- We found that smaller nomadic species, A. anderseni and A. phaeotis , have a similar bite force to the large species A. planirostris and A. lituratus; furthermore, P. helleri registered a bite force similar to that of the sedentary bat, S. giannae. Our study determined that all the features of the mandible and most of the traits of the skull have a low phylogenetic signal. Through the PGLS, we found that the diet and several cranial features (mandibular toothrow length, dentary length, braincase breadth, mastoid breadth, greatest length of skull, condylo‐incisive length, and condylo‐canine length) determined bite force performance among Stenodermatiane.
- Our results reinforce that skull size is a determining factor in the bite force, but also emphasize the importance of its relationships with morphology, ecology, and phylogeny of the species, which gives us a better understanding of the evolutionary adaptions of this highly diverse Neotropical bat group.

The effect of population density of Tetranychus urticae Koch on CO2 assimilation, transpiration and stomatal behaviour in rose leaves and on the diameter and length of stems and flower buds was investigated under greenhouse conditions. The investigation was performed in order to gain more insight into integrated control systems in rose crops grown under greenhouse conditions. Physiological processes, such as photosynthesis and transpiration, as well as stomatal behaviour and chlorophyll content, were studied as they form part of the plant's nutrition mechanism and therefore affect the quantity and quality of the flowers. Information related to the effect of spider mite population density on bloom quality, diameter and length of stems and flower buds was also collected. The data indicate that increased mite density coincides with a decrease in the net photosynthetic rate, transpiration and chlorophyll content. Higher mite densities on leaves cause stomata to remain open for longer periods, which allows a greater loss of water. Spider mite densities of 10 and 50 mites per leaf cause a reduction in flower stem length of 17 and 26%, respectively, as compared to plants with no mites present. 相似文献

Apoptosis is one of the key regulatory mechanisms in tissue modeling and development. In the thymus, 95-98% of all thymocytes die by apoptosis because they failed to express a TCR with an optimal affinity for the selecting intrathymic peptide-MHC complexes. We studied the possible role of two prominent nerve growth factor (NGF-TNF) family member systems, Fas ligand (FasL)-Fas receptor (FasR) and TNF-alpha-TNFR, in apoptosis of murine CD8+4+ double-positive (DP) thymocytes induced via TCR-CD3- and cAMP-mediated signaling. TCR-CD3epsilon-mediated apoptosis of DP thymocytes was found not to be dependent on either of the two systems. The FasL-FasR system was also found to be dispensable for the cAMP-mediated apoptosis. By contrast, cAMP agonists (dibutyryl-cAMP and forskolin) induced apoptosis via TNF-alpha, as evidenced by 1) the ability of anti-TNF-alpha mAbs to abrogate cAMP analogue-induced DP apoptosis in a dose-dependent manner; and 2) increased resistance of DP thymocytes from TNF-alpha-/- and TNFR I-/-II-/- animals to cAMP agonist-mediated apoptosis. cAMP agonists induced DP thymocyte death by a combination of two mechanisms: first, they induced selective up-regulation of TNF-alpha production, and, second, they sensitized DP thymocytes to TNF-alpha. The latter effect may be due to the down-regulation of TNFR-associated factor 2 protein. These results identify TNF-alpha as the critical mediator of cAMP-induced apoptosis in thymocytes and provide a molecular explanation for how the cAMP stimulators, including the sex steroids, may modulate T cell production output, as observed under physiological and pharmacological conditions. 相似文献

In control programs for vectorial transmission of Chagas' disease, conventional microscopic procedures are generally performed to determine baseline levels of infectivity of vectors. Reported here are data using Polymerase Chain Reaction in the detection of Trypanosoma cruzi in Triatoma dimidiata, one of the principal vectors of Chagas' disease in Ecuador. The microscopy and PCR techniques showed a high percentage of vector infection in Pedro Carbo, province of Guayas (Ecuador), with 44.16% and 46.13% positive insects, respectively. This contrasted with the very low Chagas seropositivity recorded (0.5%). Since T. dimidiata was the only vector of the Chagas' disease found in Pedro Carbo and looking at the vector behavior, our data suggest that despite the high T. dimidiata infection, the low Chagas seropositivity detected is closely associated with the epidemiological and ecological context of T. dimidiata in Pedro Carbo. 相似文献

Previous studies analyzed the importance of old leaves conservancy for wintergreen species plant growth only after early spring
old leaves elimination. However, carbon and nutrient resources for growth could have already been translocated from old leaves
to shoots during autumn. In this work, the effect of old leaves absence on the leaf mass per area (LMA, g m−2) and nutrient concentration of new spring leaves, shoot growth, and flowering was studied in Aristotelia chilensis, an Andean Patagonic woody wintergreen species of Argentina. Plants were studied after autumn defoliation (AD) or late winter
defoliation (WD) and results were compared to those of undamaged control plants (CO). The new leaves LMA and mineral nutrient
(N, P, K, and Mg) concentration values did not decrease in AD or WD compared to CO plants. Conversely, CO plants showed higher
flowering intensity and shoot lengthening compared to AD or WD plants. There were not remarkable differences regarding the
defoliation time, though non-flowering shoots grew in a lesser degree than the flowering shoots in WD plants. It was concluded
that A. chilensis old leaves cohort is an important source to shoot growth and flowering but their absence does not affect the new leaves structure
or nutritional status from early spring in either AD or in WD plants. New leaves formation probably is guaranteed by resources
(carbon and nutrients) previously stored in stems or even in the buds containing the preformed leaves since March, by the
end of summer. Provided the availability of complete resources for the new leaf flush independently of the old leaves A. chilensis would restore the carbon balance as soon as possible to resume the growth of heterotrophic tissues at normal rates. Endogenous
response to counterbalance the old leaves absence on non-flowering shoots was more effective when there was greater lag time
between defoliation and shoot growth resume. Flowering and non-flowering shoots compete for the available resources when A. chilensis have not yet expanded leaves and shoots supporting reproductive structures were stronger sinks compared to non-flowering
shoots in WD plants. 相似文献

Evolution of endogenous hormone concentration in embryogenic cultures of carrot during early expression of somatic embryogenesis 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Embryogenic callus and suspension cultures of carrot (Daucus carota L., cv. Nantaise), growing on/in medium including 1 mg/l 2,4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid (2,4-D), were transferred to medium with or without this plant growth regulator, to impair or induce, respectively, further development of somatic embryos. The endogenous hormone levels of the cultures were determined over 7 days by means of radio-immunoassay, to characterize their evolution in the initial stages of embryo development. In general, levels of indoleacetic acid (IAA) and abscisic acid (ABA) showed only short-lived differences among treatments during this time in both types of tissue analyzed (i.e., a peak of IAA in callus cultures in the absence of 2,4-D, 48 h after medium change, and higher ABA contents 144 h after subculture of suspension cultures in the presence of 2,4-D). Gibberellins (1, 3 and 20) were detected only in suspension cultures devoid of 2,4-D, starting 24 h after subculture. Concerning the evaluated cytokinins—zeatin/zeatin riboside and N6(2-isopentenyl) adenine/N6(2-isopentenyl) adenosine—the most remarkable observation is that high levels of the former generally coincided with low concentrations of the latter, indicating a shift from precursor to the active form, and vice versa. 相似文献

A protease was isolated from potato ( Solanum tuberosum L. cv. Pampeana) leaves 48 h after detaching, when aspartic protease (AP) activity is markedly increased. Purification was performed by ammonium sulfate precipitation, ion exchange chromatography and affinity chromatography. A size of 40 kDa was estimated by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis; it is monomeric and its properties are consistent with those of aspartic proteinases (EC 3.4.23): it has a pH optimum of 3 and it is inhibited by pepstatin. Like other plant APs, leaf AP appears to be glycosylated with a complex-type N-glycan. The enzyme has properties different from those of a tuber AP previously described, indicating that they may have different physiological roles. 相似文献

In this work we identified in adult and juvenile freshwater prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergii, three major type of circulating hemocytes: fusiform; rounded; and large ovoid hemocytes. Rounded and large hemocytes represent the first defense line, since this type of cells exerts phagocytic activity as well as lectin synthesis. Considering that glycosylation plays important roles in cell communication and as a target for pathogenic microorganisms, in this report was also described the main glycosidic modifications that occur in the large and rounded hemocytes from the freshwater prawn during maturation as determined with lectins. Neu5Acalpha2,6Gal, was identified homogeneously distributed in the membrane in 90% of hemocytes from juvenile organisms. Maturation of the freshwater prawn induced a decrease or complete loss of Neu5Acalpha2,6Gal residues that were replaced with Neu5Acalpha2,3 molecules in practically all hemocytes from adult organisms. This change was paralleled by a diminution in 9-O-acetyl-neuraminic acid (Neu5,9Ac(2)) expression. T and Tn antigens (Galbetal,3 GalNAcalpha1-0-Ser/Thr or GalNAcalpha1-0-Ser/Thr, respectively), as well as N-glycosidically linked glycans, seem to be highly conserved throughout maturation. Our results show that sialylation of freshwater prawn hemocytes is modulated throughout the maturation process. 相似文献
