Sex differences in reserve capacity of the pituitary-adrenal system in rats

Female rats exposed to complex emotional stress for 1 hour (restriction in the penal, vibration, loud dissonance music, interrupt light) simultaneously showed more considerable increases in plasma and adrenal corticosterone values than did male animals. Female rat corticosterone levels returned to basal values within 20-120 minutes of stressor-off. As for males the processes of restoration were delayed and accompanied by a 6-fold decrease in the plasma corticosterone levels compared with basal values. The response to additional acute stress (immobilization for 10 minutes) in various times after termination of complex emotional stress (0, 40, 120, 180, 240 minutes) was facilitated in females and remained unchanged in males. Plasma corticosterone levels under stressful conditions were 2-4-fold higher in females than in males. It is concluded that reserve capacity of adaptation system is significantly higher in female rats than in male ones.     

The Mectizan® Donation Program – highlights from 2005

Through the Mectizan^® Donation Program, Merck & Co., Inc. has donated Mectizan (ivermectin, MSD) for the treatment of onchocerciasis worldwide since 1987. Mectizan has also been donated for the elimination of lymphatic filariasis (LF) since 1998 in African countries and in Yemen where onchocerciasis and LF are co-endemic; for LF elimination programs, Mectizan is co-administered with albendazole, which is donated by GlaxoSmithKline. The Mectizan Donation Program works in collaboration with the Mectizan Expert Committee/Albendazole Coordination, its scientific advisory committee. In 2005, a total of 62,201,310 treatments of Mectizan for onchocerciasis were approved for delivery via mass treatment programs in Africa, Latin America, and Yemen. Seventy-seven percent and 20% of these treatments for onchocerciasis were for countries included in the African Programme for Onchocerciasis Control (APOC) and the former-Onchocerciasis Control Programme in West Africa (OCP), respectively. The remaining 3% of treatments approved were for the six onchocerciasis endemic countries in Latin America, where mass treatment is carried out twice-yearly with the goal of completely eliminating morbidity and eventually transmission of infection, and for Yemen. All 33 onchocerciasis endemic countries where mass treatment with Mectizan is indicated have ongoing mass treatment programs. In 2005, 42,052,583 treatments of co-administered albendazole and Mectizan were approved for national Programs to Eliminate LF (PELFs) in Africa and Yemen. There are ongoing PELFs using albendazole and Mectizan in nine African countries and Yemen; these represent 35% of the total number of countries expected to require the co-administration of these two chemotherapeutic agents for LF elimination. In Africa, the expansion of existing PELFs and the initiation of new ones have been hampered by lack of resources, technical difficulties with the mapping of LF endemicity, and the co-endemicity of LF and loiasis. Included in this review are recommendations recently put forward for the co-administration of albendazole and Mectizan in areas endemic for LF, loiasis, and onchocerciasis.     

Enhancement phenomenon in mice with a heterotopic heart transplant]

A possibility of enhancement induction with the aid of a preparation of lymphocyte membranes of the spleen of donor specificity in its combination with antimouse horse globulin was studied on mice with heterotopic graft of the heart. As shown, in recipients with prolongation of the graft electrical activity lymphocytes retained their reaction to donor antigens, whereas the blood serum produced an enhancement effect in its administration to syngeneic recipients.     

Mechanism of inhibiting the cytochrome P-450-dependent monooxygenase system in liver with fluorocarbons]

The inducer of the liver monooxygenase system perfluorodecalin added to microsomes as a submicron emulsion forms an enzyme-substrate complex with cytochrome P-450. The K(app) values for the perfluorodecalin binding to cytochrome P-450 in microsomes isolated from the livers of control and phenobarbital-treated rats are 5 x 10(-5) M and 2.3 x 10(-6) M, respectively. Perfluorodecalin competitively inhibits the binding of substrates to cytochrome P-450 and decreases the rates of monooxygenase reactions. Perfluorodecalin extrusion from the active center of cytochrome P-450 occurs when an excess of perfluorocarbons non-interacting with cytochrome P-450 is added to microsomes. There is a significant vagueness in the rates of various monooxygenase reactions because of simultaneous induction and inhibition of monooxygenase enzymes after perfluorodecalin administration to rats. The data obtained are consistent with the hypothesis that constitutive forms of cytochrome P-450 are primary receptors for xenobiotic-inducers of phenobarbital-type cytochrome P-450 isoforms.     

Molecular-biological characteristics of rubella virus strains isolated in St. Petersburg

In the surveillance of the incidence of rubella in the northwestern region of Russia, an analysis was conducted of swabs from the noses and pharynxes of 37 patients with rubella treated in Solovev District Military Clinical Hospital No. 442. To isolate the virus, the RK-13 cell line was used, in total 22 strains were allocated. The strains of the Rubella virus isolated in St. Petersburg during the 2007 outbreak belong to the 1E genotype. In the culture of RK-13 cells, changes of cellular morphogenesis and the formation of replicative complexes, as well as the shells of virions of rubella viruses, were detected.     

Ultrastructural characteristics of autorosette formation in vivo

The interaction of extravascular erythrocytes with lymphocytes, macrophages, polymorphonuclear leucocytes and fibroblast like cells in human gastric ulcer and in post-ulcer scar was studied by means of electron microscopy and cytochemical methods. It was shown that such interaction results in autologous rosette formation. There were also autorosette in the capillaries where autorosette forming cells were endothelial cells and lymphocytes. Many kinds of autorosette forming cells were connected with some peculiarities of ulcer process in the stomach.
