Introduction
Recently an association between a genetic variation in TRAF1/C5 and mortality from sepsis or cancer was found in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The most prevalent cause of death, cardiovascular disease, may have been missed in that study, since patients were enrolled at an advanced disease stage. Therefore, we used an inception cohort of RA patients to investigate the association between TRAF1/C5 and cardiovascular mortality, and replicate the findings on all-cause mortality. In the southern Iberian Peninsula, Rhododendron ponticum occurs in restricted and vulnerable populations as a Tertiary relict. Population structure and the main phases of the reproductive process were examined in order to shed light on recruitment patterns and limitations. Rhododendron ponticum flowers are self-compatible and attract a diverse array of insects, which are responsible for a considerable number of seeds set in the populations. Nevertheless, only adults form populations, whilst seedlings are scarce and saplings virtually absent (only two juveniles out of 2489 adults sampled). Non-specialized vegetative multiplication by layering was observed. Recruitment failure seems to depend on the scarcity of safe microsites, which are free from drought, for seedling establishment. The observations contrast with R. ponticum 's reputation as an aggressive invader in temperate Atlantic areas. It is proposed that the species shows a variable balance between sexual reproduction and vegetative multiplication depending on environmental conditions. At present, only the latter seems to be prevailing in relict populations in the Iberian Peninsula. Before approaching anther culture as a tool to trigger an androgenic response in a new species, it is advisable to characterize
and correlate flower and male gametophyte development to enable reproducible identification of the appropriate starting material.
Buds and flowers of Opuntia ficus-indica cv. Gialla were classified in eight stages according to their total length at the earlier stages and the length of the corolla
in flowers with emerging sepals. Due to the low condensation of chromatin in the microspore nucleus as well as in the vegetative
nucleus of the bi- and tricellular pollen along with the high autofluorescence of the intricate exine, DAPI staining turned
out not to be feasible in this species. Therefore an approach based on light-microscopy observation of semithin sections was
used. These sections were stained with toluidine blue for general structure recognition and I2KI to study starch deposition. Correlations were made between the sequential floral and male gametophyte development. Using
this approach we determined the timing of pollen formation and observed that pollen development is impaired in plants producing
seedless fruits. Furthermore, anther culture was carried out with anthers collected from flower buds at stages 2 and 3. Most

Summary The ability of active specific immunotherapy to enhance immune responses to autologous tumor-associated antigens (TAA) and to prolong the disease-free interval was evaluated in patients with Dukes B2 and C colorectal carcinoma who had undergone potentially curative resections. Patients were sensitized in the early postoperative period with irradiated autologous adenocarcinoma cells mixed with bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) to yield either a low-dose vaccine (3×106 tumor cells) or a high-dose vaccine (1×107 tumor cells). Six of seven patients who received the low-dose vaccine developed delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) responses to autologous tumor cells upon completion of the vaccination, whereas all four patients receiving high-dose vaccine displayed a positive DTH response. However, DTH responses to autologous TAA waned within 3 months in all patients receiving the low-dose vaccine; DTH responses persisted for 3 months in three of the four high-dose vaccine patients. In vitro lymphoproliferative responses to TAA correlated with DTH responses to autologous tumor cells. Active specific immunotherapy appeared to induce specific immune responses either in vitro or in vivo to autologous TAA because it did not induce responses to autologous mucosa cells. There were no complications caused by BCG or tumor cells. Survival typically contributes most to population trends in long‐lived birds and its accurate estimation is therefore vital for population management and conservation. We evaluated the effects of age, territoriality and reproduction on survival in Bonelli’s Eagle Aquila fasciata through multistate capture‐mark‐recapture analyses on a long‐term dataset. Monitoring was carried out in southeast France (1990–2008) and involved the surveying of territorial Eagles, the marking of fledged chicks, and the recording of resightings and recoveries of marked non‐territorial and territorial birds. Survival improved with age, but territoriality was not retained in the best model; yearly survival was estimated at 0.479 for fledglings (to 1 year of age), 0.570 for 1‐ and 2‐year‐olds, and 0.870 for 3‐year‐old and older individuals. The second best model supported a further increase in survival from 3‐year‐olds (0.821) to older individuals (0.880). In the third best supported model, territoriality enhanced survival, but only in 2‐year‐olds (0.632 vs. 0.562 for non‐territorial). We found no correlation between the previous breeding stage and future survival, consistent with the long lifespan of the study species. Nevertheless, 4‐year‐old and older successful breeders were more likely to breed the following year than failed adult breeders (0.869 vs. 0.582), suggesting that the cost of reproduction is small in comparison with the variation in quality among individuals or their territories. 相似文献

The species related to Vriesea paraibica (Bromeliaceae, Tillandsioideae) have controversial taxonomic limits. For several decades, this group has been identified in herbarium collections as V. × morreniana, an artificial hybrid that does not grow in natural habitats. The aim of this study was to assess the morphological variation in the V. paraibica complex through morphometric analyses of natural populations. Two sets of analyses were performed: the first involved six natural populations (G1) and the second was carried out on taxa that emerged from the first analysis, but using material from herbarium collections (G2). Univariate ANOVA was used, as well as discriminant analysis of 16 morphometric variables in G1 and 18 in G2. The results of the analyses of the two groups were similar and led to the selection of diagnostic traits of four species. Lengths of the lower and median floral bracts were significant for the separation of red and yellow floral bracts. Vriesea paraibica and V. interrogatoria have red bracts; these two species are differentiated by the widths of the lower and median portions of the inflorescence and by scape length. These structures are larger in the former and smaller in the latter.
