Summary Late Arenigian biohermal reef mounds and biostromes within the shallow-marine platform facies of the upper San Juan Formation of the Precordillera (Western Argentina) represent a new Early Ordovician reef type. The meter-sized reefs are dominated byZondarella communis n.g. n. sp. The new taxon is characterized by domical, bulbous and laminar morphotypes exhibiting growth layers and thin horizontal and vertical as well as intermingled skeletal elements included within different sets. The fossil maybe compared with stromatolites and stromatoporoids but an interpretation as primitive stromatoporoids is favoured.  相似文献

Summary The microproblematicumPycnoporidium ? eomesozoicum Flügel, 1972, from Upper Triassic reefs of the Alpine-Mediterranean region, Turkey Oman and Iran (originally interpreted as possible alga) represents the type species of a new strophomenid brachiopod genus (Gosaukammerella n.g.). The genus is characterized by a very small, millimeter-sized plano-convex shell, whose ventral valve is attached to the substratum (mainly sponges) by symmetrically arranged outgrowths developing from a pseudopunctate, lamellose foliated shell wall and composed of densely spaced subparallel ‘tubes’ comparable with productide spines secreted by papillose extensions of the mantle.Gosaukammerella seems to be the only reliable candidate for the existence of post-Paleozoic strophomenid (productid ?) brachiopods. Gosaukammerella eomesozoica is restricted to possibly cryptic, shaded reef environments inhabited predominantly by sponges serving as substrates for micromorphic brachiopods.  相似文献

In a captive group of long-tailed macaques, tool-using behavior by a single competent individual had a significant effect on the synchronous manipulative behavior of naïve animals. Group members engaged in manipulations on the same object class more frequently during times when the model was working than when it was not. The form of their behavior, however, in no way resembled the technique used by the model. All three animals that later became successful tool users were among the few subjects that exhibited a significant increase in manipulations on the same object class while the model was working. Possible causal relationships between this stimulus enhancement and the transmission of the new behavior to other group members are analyzed and discussed.  相似文献

Hydraulic and osmotic properties were measured along developing maize (Zea mays L.) roots at distances between 15 and 465 mm from the root tip to quantify the effects of changes in root structure on the radial and longitudinal movement of water and solutes (ions). Root development generated regions of different hydraulic and osmotic properties. Close to the root tip, passive solute permeability (root permeability coefficient, Psr) was high and selectivity (root reflection coefficient, sr) low, indicative of an imperfect semipermeable root structure. Within the apical 100–150 mm, Psr decreased by an order of magnitude and sr increased significantly. Root hydraulic conductivity (Lpr) depended on the nature of the force (hydrostatic and osmotic). Osmotic Lpr was smaller by an order of magnitude than hydrostatic Lpr and decreased with increasing distance from the root tip. Throughout the root, responses in turgor of cortical cells and late metaxylem to step changes in xylem pressure applied to the base of excised roots were measured at high spatial resolution. The resulting profiles of radial and longitudinal propagation of pressure showed that the endodermis had become the major hydraulic barrier in older parts of the root, i.e. at distances from the apex ä 150 mm. Other than at the endodermis, no significant radial hydraulic resistance could be detected. Leaves of Kalanchoë daigremontiana Hamet et Perr. at a photon flux density (PFD) above 220 mol·m–2s–1 (400–700 nm) or at leaf temperatures above 27.0 °C showed a rapid loss of rhythmicity, and a more or less pronounced damping-out of the endogenous circadian rhythm of CO2 exchange under continuous illumination. This rhythm was reinitiated after reduction of the PFD by 90–120 mol·m–2·s–1 or reduction of leaf temperature by 3.5–11.0 °C under otherwise unchanged external conditions. The reduction in the magnitude of the external control parameter of the Crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) rhythm (i.e. PFD or leaf temperature) set the phase of the new rhythm. The maxima of CO2 uptake occurred about 5, 28, 51, 75 h after the reduction. Simulations with a CAM model under comparable conditions showed a similar behaviour. The influence of temperature on the endogenous CAM rhythm observed in K. daigremontiana in vivo could be simulated by incorporating into the model temperature-dependent switch modes for passive efflux of malate from the vacuole to the cytoplasm. The effect of chilling on enzymes, substrates and products of sulfate reduction, gultathione synthesis and metabolism was studied in shoots and roots of maize (Zea mays L.) genotypes with different chilling sensitivity. At full expansion of the second leaf, chilling at 12 °C inhibited dry weight increase in shoots and roots compared to controls at 25 °C and induced an increase in adenosine 5-phosphosulfate sulfotransferase and -glutamylcysteine synthetase (EC 6.3.2.2) activity in the second leaf of all genotypes tested. Glutathione synthetase (EC 6.3.2.3) activity was about one order of magnitude higher than -glutamylcysteine synthetase activity, but remained unchanged during chilling except for one genotype. During chilling, cysteine and glutathione content of second leaves increased to significantly higher levels in the two most chilling-tolerant genotypes. Comparing the most tolerant and most sensitive genotype showed that chilling induced a greater incorporation of35S from [35S]sulfate into cysteine and glutathione in the chilling-tolerant than in the sensitive genotype. Chilling decreased the amount of35S-label incorporated into proteins in shoots of both genotypes, but had no effect on this incorporation in the roots. Glutathione reductase (EC 1.6.4.2) and nitrate reductase (EC 1.6.6.1) activity were constitutively higher in the chilling-tolerant genotypes, but showed no changes in most examined genotypes during 3 d at 12 °C. The production of antimicrobial phytoalexins is one of the best-known inducible defence responses following microbial infection of plants or treatment with elicitors. In the legume soybean (Glycine max L.), 1,3-1,6--glucans derived from the fungal pathogen Phytophthora sojae have been identified as potent elicitors of the synthesis of the phytoalexin, glyceollin. Recently it has been reported that during symbiotic interaction between soybean and the nitrogen-fixing bacterium Bradyrhizobium japonicum USDA 110 the bacteria synthesize cyclic 1,3-1,6--glucans. Here we demonstrate that both the fungal and the bacterial -glucans are ligands of -glucan-binding sites which are putative receptors for the elicitor signal compounds in soybean roots. Whereas the fungal -glucans stimulate phytoalexin synthesis at low concentrations, the bacterial cyclic 1,3-1,6--glucans appear to be inactive even at relatively high concentrations. Competition studies indicate that increasing concentrations of the bacterial 1,3-1,6--glucans progressively inhibit stimulation of phytoalexin synthesis in a bioassay induced by the fungal 1,3-1,6--glucans. Another type of cyclic -glucan, a 1,2--glucan from Rhizobium meliloti, that does not nodulate on soybean, seems to be inactive as elicitor and as ligand of the -glucan-binding sites. Efficient methods of chromosome doubling are critical for the production of microspore-derived, doubled-haploid (=DH) plants, especially if, as in maize anther culture, spontaneous chromosome doubling occurs infrequently. In the present study, colchicine (5–1000 mg/l) was added to the induction medium and maize anthers were incubated in the colchicine-containing medium for different durations (1–7 days). In order to improve overall anther culture response, the culture temperature was adjusted to 14°C during the first 7 days. Colchicine applied at low concentration, i.e. 5 mg/l (7 days), or for short duration, i.e. 1–3 days (250 mg/l), showed beneficial effects on the formation of embryolike structures (=ES) and thus led to increased plant production, but was comparatively ineffective regarding chromosome doubling. Optimal doubling effects were observed when anthers had been exposed to culture medium containing 250 and 1000 mg/l of colchicine (7 days); in these treatments the doubling index (=DI), defined as the quotient of the number of DH plants and the number of totally regenerated plants in a specific treatment, rose to 0.56 and 0.53, respectively, compared to 0.20 in the untreated control. However, colchicine administered at concentrations higher than 250 mg/l seemed to be detrimental to general plant production; thus, in spite of a high DI, the overall DH plant production was even lower than in the control treatment. Maximum DH plant production for three different genotypes was accomplished with culture medium containing 250 mg/l of colchicine (7 days). With the best-responding genotype (ETH-M 36) a DH plant production of 9.9 DH plants/100 anthers was accomplished, i.e. a 7-fold increase compared to the non-treated anthers. This is the first report on efficient chromosome doubling in anther culture by subjecting anthers to colchicinecontaining induction medium during a post-plating cold treatment. Chromosome doubling as described here becomes an integral part of the maize anther culture protocol and thus represents a rapid and economical way to produce DH plants.  相似文献
