During spring and autumn 1970 and 1971 the movements of terns off the coast of Ghana near Accra were studied by radar. In autumn, dense movements were recorded within 22 km of the coast both day and night from July to early December. Fluctuations in the magnitude of the movements suggest that the terns were on passage through the Gulf of Guinea. Simultaneous to these movements were roosting flights into shore roosts and both movements appeared independent.
In contrast, no spring movements along the coastline were detected either by radar or visually from the land. Although small tern flocks probably moved westwards within 22 km of the coast, but outside their detectable radar range, the results suggest that the majority of terns return through the Gulf of Guinea by a different route from that taken in autumn.
The difference between spring and autumn movements correlates well with the seasonal variation of the terns' food sources. In autumn, upwellings result in an abundant fish supply (sardines) in the surface waters close to land, whereas in spring, fish is abundant only well off shore such as at fronts (convergences) and upwellings (divergences) both of which have been located as far as 600 km from the coast. 相似文献

The breeding season of Heuglin “s Masked Weaver Ploceus heuglini at Legon began in the latter half of the major dry season in January and February; continued through the main wet season and ceased in late August and for the rest of the year. The Accra colony had a similar breeding activity but in addition was active for a short period in November which had ended by mid-December. Although the majority of males formed colonies in which the number of males ranged from two to twenty, solitary breeding occurred equally frequently. Most males within the Legon colony, and possibly this is true for all colonies, were polygynous while most solitary males were monogamous. More nests were built by each male than the number of females involved in the polygyny. A close nesting association with the Red Weaver Ant Oecophylla longinoda existed and the data suggested that the weaver sought the ant. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) irradiated with high dose gamma-radiation (1000-5000 rad) are commonly used as feeder cells during the cloning of T lymphocytes, natural killer (NK) and lymphokine activated killer (LAK) cells. We report here that such gamma-irradiated PBMC can be stimulated with interleukin 2 (IL-2) to express the ability to lyse a variety of tumor cell targets. The non-major histocompatibility complex (MHC) restricted cytotoxicity demonstrated by irradiated PBMC is, however, lower than that expressed by their non-irradiated counterparts. The numbers of viable, gamma-irradiated LAK cells are significantly increased by the addition of the mitogen, phytohemagglutinin (PHA). Purification of the gamma-irradiated cells expressing cytotoxic activity by flow cytometry determined that the effector cells were predominantly CD3- cells, although some CD3+ cells also expressed moderate LAK activity. The ability of gamma-irradiated cells to proliferate in the presence of PHA alone, or with IL-2 + PHA, was maximal at day 4-5; but proliferation, as detected by 3H-thymidine uptake, was not detectable beyond 12-15 days of in vitro culture. Because many of the LAK, T cell and NK cell cloning procedures require the presence of feeder layers, growth factors (usually IL-2) and mitogens, the presence of residual feeder cells expressing cytotoxic activity may affect the specificity of such clones. Thus, efforts should be made to ensure that such gamma-radiation-resistant cells capable of expressing cytotoxic activity are completely eliminated before the cloned cells are used for further experiments. 相似文献
