The mean annual litterfall at two dry woodland sites in central Queensland was 1129 kg ha–1 for an open E. populnea F. Muell. woodland (n = 2 years), and 2318 kg ha–1 for a woodland dominated by E. cambageana Maiden (n = 1 year). Leaves formed the largest component of total litterfall, which varied seasonally with a spring–summer maximum. Annual litterfall at these sites conformed with a pattern of decreasing litter production with declining annual rainfall, consistent with a range of eucalypt-dominated communities.  相似文献

An acinus is the principal secretion unit of an exocrine gland. This paper sets up a mathematical model of an acinus and examines the effect on the output of varying the operating parameters, both of the secretion mechanism and the fluid properties. Particular reference is made to acini of the pancreas. The question of whether the effects of cystic fibrosis on the pancreas can be attributed to the increased viscosity of the exudate is also considered. The work identifies key parameters, and their quantitative ranges, which would need to be examined experimentally in order to resolve this question.  相似文献

Summary It has been suggested that C. porosus select nest sites which provide a source of freshwater for hatchlings during the dry season. From a mark-recapture study, we conclude that hatchling C. porosus can survive and grow in hyperosmotic saltwater without drinking freshwater. Hence, the siting of nests is unlikely to be the consequence of a requirement by hatchlings for freshwater. Considered along with other information, our observations imply that hatchling C. porosus have functional salt glands.  相似文献

Routine fecal examination revealed novel coccidian oocysts in asymptomatic California sea lions (Zalophus californianus) in a rehabilitation facility. Coccidian oocysts were observed in fecal samples collected from 15 of 410 California sea lions admitted to The Marine Mammal Center between April 2007 and October 2009. Phylogenetic analysis using the full ITS-1 region, partial small subunit 18S rDNA sequence, and the Apicomplexa rpoB region identified 2 distinct sequence clades, referred to as Coccidia A and Coccidia B, and placed them in the Sarcocystidae, grouped with the tissue-cyst-forming coccidia. Both sequence clades resolved as individual taxa at ITS-1 and rpoB and were most closely related to Neospora caninum. Coccidia A was identified in 11 and Coccidia B in 4 of 12 sea lion oocyst samples successfully sequenced (3 of those sea lions were co-infected with both parasites). Shedding of Coccidia A oocysts was not associated with age class, sex, or stranding location, but yearlings represented the majority of shedders (8/15). This is the first study to use molecular phylogenetics to identify and describe coccidian parasites shed by a marine mammal.  相似文献

Iron is an absolute requirement for nearly all organisms, but most bacterial pathogens are faced with extreme iron-restriction within their host environments. To overcome iron limitation pathogens have evolved precise mechanisms to steal iron from host supplies. Staphylococcus aureus employs the iron-responsive surface determinant (Isd) system as its primary heme-iron uptake pathway. Hemoglobin or hemoglobin-haptoglobin complexes are bound by Near iron-Transport (NEAT) domains within cell surface anchored proteins IsdB or IsdH. Heme is stripped from the host proteins and transferred between NEAT domains through IsdA and IsdC to the membrane transporter IsdEF for internalization. Once internalized, heme can be degraded by IsdG or IsdI, thereby liberating iron for the organism. Most components of the Isd system have been structurally characterized to provide insight into the mechanisms of heme binding and transport. This review summarizes recent research on the Isd system with a focus on the structural biology of heme recognition.  相似文献

The level of tissue hydration is known to effect viscoelastic material properties. However, prior studies have not fully investigated the effect of hydration on dynamic behavior nor compared the results of transient and dynamic behavior. The material properties of medial collateral rat knee ligaments were studied in relation to hydration, using (sequentially) 0.3 osmolar artificial interstitial fluid (AIF), solutions of AIF plus sucrose with osmolarity 1.05, 1.80 or 2.55, and then AIF. In each solution, the complex compliance was determined as a function of frequency, and the creep response was measured. Complex compliance was determined from a constitutive model created by applying a 0.4+/-0.2 MPa pseudo Gaussian (PGN) stress stimulus to the ligament. Dehydration caused a reduction in cross-sectional area that was linearly related to the osmolarity of the solution. Reductions of up to 52% were observed and were reversible upon rehydration. Dehydration caused a reduction in the creep rate that was not immediately recovered upon rehydration. The storage compliance was reduced by up to 50% with dehydration; these changes were reversed upon rehydration. The loss compliance and phase angle were not affected by dehydration. Transient and dynamic experiments examine different viscoelastic characteristics and both types of tests appear to be necessary to fully characterize the effects of hydration.  相似文献

Sea otters in California are commonly infected with Toxoplasma gondii. A unique Type X strain is responsible for 72% of otter infections, but its prevalence in terrestrial animals and marine invertebrates inhabiting the same area was unknown. Between 2000 and 2005, 45 terrestrial carnivores (lions, bobcats, domestic cats and foxes) and 1396 invertebrates (mussels, clams and worms) were screened for T. gondii using PCR and DNA sequencing to determine the phylogeographic distribution of T. gondii archetypal I, II, III and Type X genotypes. Marine bivalves have been shown to concentrate T. gondii oocysts in the laboratory, but a comprehensive survey of wild invertebrates has not been reported. A California mussel from an estuary draining into Monterey Bay was confirmed positive for Type X T. gondii by multilocus PCR and DNA sequencing at the B1 and SAG1 loci. This mussel was collected from nearshore marine waters just after the first significant rainfall event in the fall of 2002. Of 45 carnivores tested at the B1, SAG1, and GRA6 typing loci, 15 had PCR-confirmed T. gondii infection; 11 possessed alleles consistent with infection by archetypal Type I, II or III strains and 4 possessed alleles consistent with Type X T. gondii infection. No non-canonical alleles were identified. The four T. gondii strains with Type X alleles were identified from two mountain lions, a bobcat and a fox residing in coastal watersheds adjacent to sea otter habitat near Monterey Bay and Estero Bay. Confirmation of Type X T. gondii in coastal-dwelling felids, canids, a marine bivalve and nearshore-dwelling sea otters supports the hypotheses that feline faecal contamination is flowing from land to sea through surface runoff, and that otters can be infected with T. gondii via consumption of filter-feeding marine invertebrates.  相似文献
