Summary Effects of variation in fire season on flowering of forbs and shrubs were studied experimentally in two longleaf pine forest habitats in northern Florida, USA. Large, replicated plots were burned at different times of the year, and flowering on each plot was measured over the twelve months following fire. While fire season had little effect on the number of species flowering during the year following fire, fires during the growing season decreased average flowering duration per species and increased synchronization of peak flowering times within species relative to fires between growing seasons. Fires during the growing season also increased the dominance of fall flowering forbs and delayed peak fall flowering. Differences in flowering resulting from variation in fire season were related to seasonal changes in the morphology of clonal forbs, especially fall-flowering composites. Community level differences in flowering phenologies indicated that timing of fire relative to environmental cues that induced flowering was important in determining flowering synchrony among species within the ground cover of longleaf pine forests. Differences in fire season produced qualitatively similar effects on flowering phenologies in both habitats, indicating plant responses to variation in the timing of fires were not habitat specific. 相似文献

The juice of unripe fruit from a wild species of tomato, Lycopersicon peruvianum (L.) Mill., LA 107, contains over 50% of its soluble proteins as the sum of two proteinase inhibitors. These are the highest levels of proteinase inhibitors and highest percentage of soluble proteins as proteinase inhibitors of any plant or animal tissue found to date. Fruit of the modern tomato, L. esculentum Mill., contains only negligible quantities of the two inhibitors. The two proteinase inhibitors in the fruit of L. peruvianum are members of the Inhibitor I and II families previously found in potato tubers and in leaves of wounded potato and tomato plants. The levels of the two inhibitors in the unripe fruit decrease significantly during ripening. Unripe fruit from other wild Lycopersicon species such as L. parviflorum Rick, Kesicki, Fobes et Holle, L. hirsutum Humb. et Bonpe., L. pimpinellifolium Mill., and other lines of L. peruvianum contain moderate levels of the inhibitors that also decrease during ripening. Another wild tomato species, L. pennellii Corr., is similar to L. esculentum in not containing the two proteinase inhibitors in either unripe or ripe fruit. The transient levels of the inhibitors in fruit of wild species indicate that they are present in unripe fruit as defensive chemicals against insects, birds or small mammals and their disappearance during ripening may render them edible to facilitate seed dispersal. High levels of mRNAs coding for Inhibitors I and II in unripe fruit of L. peruvianum, LA 107, indicate that strong promoters may regulate the developmentally expressed proteinase-inhibitor genes in tomato fruit that may have a substantial potential for use in genetic-engineering experiments to enhance the production of large quantities of proteinase inhibitors or other proteins in field tomatoes.Abbreviations poly(A)+ mRNA

β-lactam antibiotics in the presence of certain metal ions damage deoxyribose and DNA with the release of thiobarbituric acid-reactive material. This damage can be substantially prevented by catalase, metal chelators and some scavengers of the hydroxyl radical. Ferric salts in the presence of certain β-lactam antibiotics were effective in degrading deoxyribose but they did not appear to damage DNA. An efficient protocol has been developed for the in vitro propagation of Mexican Weeping Bamboo through somatic embryogenesis from zygotic embryo explants. Mature seeds and excised embryos were cultured in the light or in the dark on both Murashige and Skoog's and Gamborg's B5 basal media with various supplements. Optimal somatic embryogenesis and plant regeneration were obtained by culture in the dark on Murashige and Skoog's basal medium supplemented with 3 mg/1 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid, 0.5 mg/1 6-benzylaminopurine and 2.0% sucrose. The oviposition behavior of single females of Drosophila melanogasterwas studied in population cages over 24 h. Each female shows a different behavior, but they can be arbitrarily separated into those which concentrate their egg laying in only one tube and those which spread it over more than two tubes. A comparison is made between females extracted from the Valdivian population and flies from lines selected for high and low aggregation. The Na-H antiporter of renal-brush border membranes is inhibited by cyclic AMP and stimulated by protein kinase C. The proximal tubule contains guanylate cyclase and is capable of cyclic GMP production. The effect of cGMP on renal Na-H antiporter activity was analyzed in phosphorylated brush border membranes by 22Na uptake in the presence or absence of 1 mM amiloride. 8-Bromo cyclic GMP (1 microM) increased the amiloride-sensitive 22Na uptake in control from 1.26 +/- 0.13 to 1.54 +/- 0.12 nmol/mg/protein/10 sec, P less than 0.01, without altering the amiloride-insensitive component. In the absence of exogenous ATP, cGMP also stimulated the amiloride-sensitive 22Na uptake, which can be explained by the presence of endogenous ATP in concentrations of up to 50 microM in the membranes. In ATP-depleted membrane vesicles, however, cGMP inhibited the amiloride-sensitive 22Na uptake. These data indicate that cGMP acts on the Na-H antiporter by at least two different mechanisms, one of which is ATP dependent. It is likely that cGMP-dependent protein kinase mediates the stimulatory effects seen in the presence of ATP, and the inhibition seen in ATP-depleted membranes results from cGMP direct action on the Na-H antiporter. 相似文献

To investigate the physiologic significance of enhanced renal thromboxane production in murine lupus nephritis, we measured renal hemodynamics and eicosanoid production in MRL-lpr/lpr mice from 8 to 20 weeks of age. Over this age range, MRL-lpr/lpr mice develop an autoimmune disease with nephritis similar to human systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). In these studies, glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and PAH clearance (CPAH) decreased progressively with age in MRL-lpr/lpr mice, but not in controls. This impairment of renal hemodynamics was associated with increased renal thromboxane production, as well as increased excretion of both thromboxane B2 (TxB2) and 2,3-dinor TxB2 in urine. There was an inverse correlation between renal thromboxane production in MRL-lpr/lpr mice and both GFR and CPAH. Furthermore, there were positive correlations between thromboxane production by the kidney and both the severity of renal histopathology and serum anti-DNA antibody levels measured in individual animals. Enhanced urinary excretion of TxB2 and the development of renal dysfunction also coincided temporally with the appearance of increased levels of interleukin 1 beta (IL-1 beta) mRNA in renal cortex. Acute administration of the specific thromboxane receptor antagonist GR32191 to MRL-lpr/lpr mice restored GFR to normal in early stages of the autoimmune disease. However, in animals with more advanced nephritis, the effect of acute thromboxane receptor blockade on renal hemodynamics was less marked. The CFTR Cl- channel contains two predicted nucleotide-binding domains (NBD1 and NBD2); therefore, we examined the effect of ATP on channel activity. Once phosphorylated by cAMP-dependent protein kinase (PKA), channels required cytosolic ATP to open. Activation occurred by a PKA-independent mechanism. ATP gamma S substituted for ATP in PKA phosphorylation, but it did not open the channel. Several hydrolyzable nucleotides (ATP greater than GTP greater than ITP approximately UTP greater than CTP) reversibly activated phosphorylated channels, but nonhydrolyzable analogs and Mg(2+)-free ATP did not. Studies of CFTR mutants indicated that ATP controls channel activity independent of the R domain and suggested that hydrolysis of ATP by NBD1 may be sufficient for channel opening. The finding that nucleoside triphosphates regulate CFTR begins to explain why CF-associated mutations in the NBDs block Cl- channel function. 相似文献
