Previous research has identified a relationship between the rate of dissipation of turbulent kinetic energy, , and the mass-transfer-limited rate of uptake by a surface, herein called the 1/4 law, and suggests this law may be applicable to nutrient uptake on coral reefs. To test this suggestion, nitrate uptake rate and gravitational potential energy loss have been measured for a section of Warraber Island reef flat, Torres Strait, northern Australia. The reef flat section is 3 km long, with a 3 m tidal range, and on the days measured, subject to 6 m s–1 tradewinds. The measured nitrate uptake coefficient, S , on two consecutive days during the rising tide was 1.23±0.28 and 1.42±0.52×10–4 m s–1. The measured loss of gravitational potential energy across the reef flat, GPE , on the same rising tides over a 178 m section was 208±24 and 161±20 kg m–1 s–2. Assuming the GPE is dissipated as turbulent kinetic energy in the water column, and using the 1/4 law, the mass-transfer-limited nitrate uptake coefficient, SMTL , on the two days was 1.57±0.03 and 1.45±0.04×10–4 m s–1. Nitrate uptake on Warraber Island reef flat is close to the mass-transfer limit, and is determined by oceanographic nitrate concentrations and energy climate.Communicated by B.C. Hatcher  相似文献

A new technique called the reef resource inventory (RRI) was developed to map the distribution and abundance of benthos and substratum on reefs. The rapid field sampling technique uses divers to visually estimate the percentage cover of categories of benthos and substratum along 2×20 m plotless strip-transects positioned randomly over the tops, and systematically along the edge of reefs. The purpose of this study was to compare the relative sampling accuracy of the RRI against the line intercept transect technique (LIT), an international standard for sampling reef benthos and substratum. Analysis of paired sampling with LIT and RRI at 51 sites indicated sampling accuracy was not different (P>0.05) for 8 of the 12 benthos and substratum categories used in the study. Significant differences were attributed to small-scale patchiness and cryptic coloration of some benthos; effects associated with sampling a sparsely distributed animal along a line versus an area; difficulties in discriminating some of the benthos and substratum categories; and differences due to visual acuity since LIT measurements were taken by divers close to the seabed whereas RRI measurements were taken by divers higher in the water column. The relative cost efficiency of the RRI technique was at least three times that of LIT for all benthos and substratum categories and as much as 10 times higher for two categories. These results suggest that the RRI can be used to obtain reliable and accurate estimates of relative abundance of broad categories of reef benthos and substratum.

Ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF) is a neuroprotective cytokine initially identified in chick embryo. It has been evaluated for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. CNTF also acts on non-neuronal cells such as oligodendrocytes, astrocytes, adipocytes and skeletal muscles cells. CNTF has regulatory effects on body weight and is currently in clinical trial for the treatment of diabetes and obesity. CNTF mediates its function by activating a tripartite receptor comprising the CNTF receptor alpha chain (CNTFRalpha), the leukemia inhibitory factor receptor beta chain (LIFRbeta) and gp130. Human, rat and chicken CNTF have been expressed as recombinant proteins, and most preclinical studies in murine models have been performed using rat recombinant protein. Rat and human CNTF differ in their fine specificities: in addition to CNTFR, rat CNTF has been shown to activate the LIFR (a heterodimer of LIFRbeta and gp130), whereas human CNTF can bind and activate a tripartite receptor comprising the IL-6 receptor alpha chain (IL-6Ralpha) and LIFR. To generate tools designed for mouse models of human diseases; we cloned and expressed in E. coli both mouse CNTF and the CNTFRalpha chain. Recombinant mouse CNTF was active and showed a high level of specificity for mouse CNTFR. It shares the arginine residue with rat CNTF which prevents binding to IL-6Ralpha. It did not activate the LIFR at all concentrations tested. Recombinant mouse CNTF is therefore specific for CNTFR and as such represents a useful tool with which to study CNTF in mouse models. It appears well suited for the comparative evaluation of CNTF and the two additional recently discovered CNTFR ligands, cardiotrophin-like cytokine\cytokine-like factor-1 and neuropoietin.  相似文献

Pulmonary artery catheterization is a frequent procedure for hemodynamic monitoring in critically ill patients or high-risk surgical patients. Mechanical and infectious complications are recognized, though catheter dysfunction and malposition are more frequent and often require clinical intervention. We present the case of a Swan-Ganz catheter with the appearance of a mechanical fracture at the distal end, which required clinical and radiographic investigation to determine the nature of the aberrancy. The evaluation of a malfunctioning pulmonary artery catheter (PAC) is a frequent occurrence in the intensive care unit and requires careful clinical consideration and radiographic examination.  相似文献
