Effect of transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β) on ATP citrate lyase in isolated hepatocytes

Summary Transforming growth factor beta (TGF-) activates ATP citrate lyase in freshly isolated rat liver hepatocytes in a time dependent manner. Maximal stimulation of the enzyme occurred with less than thirty minutes of incubation of the cells with TGF-. The half maximal effect on the enzyme determined in hepatocytes incubated with TGF- for 10 min at 37°C was elicited by TGF- concentrations in the 10^–11 – 10^–12 M range. The potential role of TGF- stimulation of ATP citrate lyase activity in new membrane synthesis is discussed.     

Testosterone, and winning and losing in human competition

Testosterone and cortisol were measured in six university tennis players across six matches during their varsity season. Testosterone rose just before most matches, and players with the highest prematch testosterone had the most positive improvement in mood before their matches. After matches, mean testosterone rose for winners relative to losers, especially for winners with very positive moods after their victories and who evaluated their own performance highly. Winners with rising testosterone had higher testosterone before their next match, in contrast to losers with falling testosterone, who had lower testosterone before their next match. Cortisol was not related to winning or losing, but it was related to seed (top players having low cortisol), and cortisol generally declined as the season progressed. These results are consistent with a biosocial theory of status.     

Molecular evolution among someDrosophila species groups as indicated by two-dimensional electrophoresis

Summary The evolutionary and phylogenetic relationships of sevenDrosophila species groups (represented byD. melanogaster, D. mulleri, D. mercatorum, D. robusta, D. virilis, D. immigrans, D. funebris, andD. melanica) were investigated by the use of two-dimensional electrophoresis. The resulting phylogeny is congruent with the current views of evolution among these groups based on morphological characters and immunological distances. Previous studies indicated that the ability of one-dimensional electrophoresis to resolve relationships between distantly related taxa extended to about the Miocene [25 million years (Myr) ago], but the present study demonstrates that two-dimensional electrophoresis is a useful indicator of phylogeny even back to the Paleocene (65 Myr ago). In addition, two-dimensional electrophoresis is shown to be a useful technique for detecting slowly evolving structural proteins such as actins and tropomyosins.     

Morphology and Taxonomy of <Emphasis Type="Italic">Apristurus longicephahis</Emphasis> (Lamniformes,Seyliorhinidae)

Data on the individual variation and changes with growth in proportions and morphology are presented for the poorly known Apristurus longicephalus, and compared with those of other species. A. longicephalus is concluded to be a distinct species without synonyms, characterized by its long snout, widely separate nostrils, long caudal fin, short abdomen, very sparse teeth, and low number of monospondylous vertebrae. It is a species of small size, maturing at about 42 cm in total length.     

Scale Growth and Squamation Chronology for the Laboratory-Reared Hermaphroditic Fish <Emphasis Type="Italic">Rivulus marmoratus</Emphasis> (Cyprinodontidae)

Scale morphology, growth and the squarnation chronology are described for the hermaphroditic fish Rivulus marmoratus reared in the laboratory. The scales are round or oval shaped cycloid type, and their sizes are about 0.3–1.0 mm in diameter. The number of ridges increases more rapidly relative to the body growth of the fish in early stages, but this increase is proportionate to growth subsequently. Three loci of scale development have been identified. The scales first appeared on the center of the parietal region at 8 days after hatching. The second locus of scale formation was on the lateral line of the posterior end of the caudal peduncle. A third locus was later observed on the lower right corner of the operculum: The final squamation was completed at 6 weeks after hatching.     

Physiological and enzymatic activity of pepper seeds (Capsicum annuum) during priming

Pepper ( Capsicum annuum L. cv. Keystone Resistance Giant 3) seeds were monitored during priming to determine if seed treatments which accelerate the rate of germination could be correlated with specific physiological changes within the seeds. Pepper seeds primed with −0.90 and −1.35 MPa NaCl solutions at 23°C for 18 days did not completely equilibrate with the osmotic potential of the priming solution. Seed respiratory rates indicated that priming extends the lag phase of germination following imbibition. Soluble protein levels increased 115% in primed seeds, and the uptake and incorporation of [¹⁴C(U)] labelled amino acids into the acid insoluble fraction increased throughout the priming treatments. Alcohol dehydrogenase (EC 1.1.1.1, anaerobic metabolism), glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (EC 1.1.1.49) and 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase (EC 1.1.1.44, pentose phosphate pathway) activities remained stable throughout the priming treatment, but were higher after 6 days. than the water-imbibed controls. Aldolase (EC 4.2.1.1. glycolysis) and isocitrate lyase (EC 4.1.3.1, glyoxylate cycle) activities increased with imbibition and were 61 and 56% (respectively) higher in primed seeds as compared to the water-imbibed controls after 12 days. Treatment with the −0.90 MPa NaCl solution was more effective than the −1.35 MPa solution in improving the rate of germination, yet there were no significant differences between the protein concentrations or enzyme activities of the two priming treatments. However, the incorporation of labelled amino acids into pepper seeds was significantly higher in the −0.90 MPa priming treatment.     

Cultural characteristics and zearalenone production by strains of<Emphasis Type="Underline">Fusarium</Emphasis> from wheat

Conidia of the speciesFusarium culmorum /W.G.Sm./ Sacc. andFusarium graminearum Schwabe are characterized by variability in zearalenone production and dimensions depending on the substrate. The sporulation of isolates from some wheat eultivars have been deprived in vivo and in vitro in the first passage, but not their pathogenicity and toxic metabolites production. Nonsporulating strains produced lower quantités of zearalenone than sporulating ones. Liquid filtrates of such nonsporulating strains had a high phytotoxic effect on wheat caryopses. The crystalline toxin DAS /0,25 ug/ml/ had low phytotoxic effect on wheat caryopses.
