Water in the Avian Egg Overall Budget of Incubation   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The loss of mass in eggs during incubation was examined andevidence is presented to show that this is essentially due toloss of water. The mean fraction of water lost by diffusionthroughout incubation is 0.150 ± 0.025 S D per gram ofegg and 0.162 ± 0.026 S D per gram of egg content for81 species. The water fraction of fresh eggs and of hatchingeggs was examined in 32 species divided according to maturityat hatching, and found to be very similar within each category(83% in altricial 83% in semi-altricial 78% in semi-precocial72% in precocial eggs). The 11% difference between the altricialand precocial categories is statistically significant. Duringincubation, dry matter is metabolized increasing the water fractionwhich is further increased by metabolic water production. Hence,water loss during incubation is mandatory if the relative watercontent of an egg at the end of incubation is to remain essentiallythe same as at the beginning. Equations are developed whichallow one to estimate the difference between diffusive waterloss and the total water loss in altricial and piecocial eggscaused by additional water loss during pipping and hatching.  相似文献

Data are presented for oxygen consumption water loss duringincubation water vapor conductance of the shell and pore numberof avian eggs and the way in which these values relate not onlyto egg mass but also to incubation time. It is proposed thatall these functions are proportional to the product of egg massand rate of development where the latter is defined as the inverseof incubation time. Glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchored proteins coat the surface of extracellular Plasmodium falciparum merozoites, of which several are highly validated candidates for inclusion in a blood-stage malaria vaccine. Here we determined the proteome of gradient-purified detergent-resistant membranes of mature blood-stage parasites and found that these membranes are greatly enriched in GPI-anchored proteins and their putative interacting partners. Also prominent in detergent-resistant membranes are apical organelle (rhoptry), multimembrane-spanning, and proteins destined for export into the host erythrocyte cytosol. Four new GPI-anchored proteins were identified, and a number of other novel proteins that are predicted to localize to the merozoite surface and/or apical organelles were detected. Three of the putative surface proteins possessed six-cysteine (Cys6) motifs, a distinct fold found in adhesive surface proteins expressed in other life stages. All three Cys6 proteins, termed Pf12, Pf38, and Pf41, were validated as merozoite surface antigens recognized strongly by antibodies present in naturally infected individuals. In addition to the merozoite surface, Pf38 was particularly prominent in the secretory apical organelles. A different cysteine-rich putative GPI-anchored protein, Pf92, was also localized to the merozoite surface. This insight into merozoite surfaces provides new opportunities for understanding both erythrocyte invasion and anti-parasite immunity.  相似文献

1. A method is described for the determination of the oxidized and reduced forms of the nicotinamide nucleotides by measuring the rate of the oxygen uptake with an oxygen electrode in a system in which the nucleotide acts as the rate-limiting carrier in a cyclic system. 2. The method permits the measurement of quantities as low as 0·02μg. of NAD+ or NADH or 0·01μg. of NADP+ or NADPH. 3. The method permits the measurement of the nucleotides in extracts that contain non-specific reducing substances, coloured compounds or fluorescent materials, e.g. green leaves. 4. The oxidoreduction state and concentration of both NAD and NADP as well as the maximum potential activities of NMN adenylyltransferase and NAD(+) kinase have been measured in the livers of rats treated for 14-28 days with 4-dimethylamino-3'-methylazobenzene, 4-dimethylamino-4'-fluoroazobenzene, alpha-naphthyl isothiocyanate or ethionine and in primary hepatomas induced by 4-dimethylamino-3'-methylazobenzene. 2. The total NAD and total NADP both decreased in the livers of rats treated with either azo-dyes or alpha-naphthyl isothiocyanate but not in those treated with ethionine. The activities of NMN adenylyltransferase and NAD(+) kinase did not alter appreciably after such treatments. 3. In the primary hepatomas the concentrations of both NAD and NADP fell drastically and the activities of NMN adenylyltransferase and NAD(+) kinase fell to about 50% of the control activities. 4. No correlation could be established between the concentrations of the nucleotides and the activities of the enzymes synthesizing them. It appears, however, that a relationship exists between the NAD content of the tissue and the amount of NADP present. 5. The results are discussed with respect to the control of NAD and NADP synthesis by ATP. At the concentrations of NAD normally present in the cell it is suggested that NAD may be a rate-limiting substrate in NADP synthesis.  相似文献
