AbstractThe Iberian Peninsula hosts six native pine species, which are distributed according to an altitudinal gradient from coastal to mountain areas, close to 1000 m a.s.l. Root hydraulic responses are the key factors of spatial segregation of trees in response to environmental factors such as temperature and water availability, and they will be a determinant of future population and species spatial dynamics in a changing climate scenario. Root hydraulic responses to soil water temperatures ranging from 30°C to 0°C were compared for young plants of these six aforementioned species. Hydraulic resistance (Rh) increased for all species in response to temperature decrease. Mountain pines showed higher Rh values than coastal pines at all temperatures, and showed a more prompt and marked hydraulic response when temperatures dropped down. Data point out that mountain pines display a clear mechanism to avoid cold embolism and secondary water stress, while coastal species have a limited responsiveness to temperature changes due to scarce hydraulic regulation. These differences in hydraulic behaviour support the spatial segregation between mountain and coastal pines in the Iberian Peninsula, and will be one of the factors at the basis of the future shifts of species and populations that will be associated to climate change. 相似文献

Cocaine dependence is a neuropsychiatric disorder in which both environmental and genetic factors are involved. Several processes, that include reward and neuroadaptations, mediate the transition from use to dependence. In this regard, dopamine and serotonin neurotransmission systems are clearly involved in reward and other cocaine‐related effects, whereas neurotrophic factors may be responsible for neuroadaptations associated with cocaine dependence. We examined the contribution to cocaine dependence of 37 genes related to the dopaminergic and serotoninergic systems, neurotrophic factors and their receptors through a case–control association study with 319 single nucleotide polymorphisms selected according to genetic coverage criteria in 432 cocaine‐dependent patients and 482 sex‐matched unrelated controls. Single marker analyses provided evidence for association of the serotonin receptor HTR2A with cocaine dependence [rs6561333; nominal P‐value adjusted for age = 1.9e?04, odds ratio = 1.72 (1.29–2.30)]. When patients were subdivided according to the presence or absence of psychotic symptoms, we confirmed the association between cocaine dependence and HTR2A in both subgroups of patients. Under natural conditions, plants are subjected to continuous changes of irradiance that drive variations of stomatal conductance to water vapour (gs). We propose a dynamic model to predict the temporal response of gs at the leaf level using an asymmetric sigmoid function with a unique parameter describing time constants for increasing and decreasing gs. The model parameters were adjusted to observed data using Approximate Bayesian Computation. We tested the model performance for (1) instant changes of irradiance; or (2) continuous and controlled variations of irradiance simulating diurnal time courses. Compared with the two mostly used steady‐state models, our dynamic model described daily time courses of gs with a higher accuracy. In particular, it was able to describe the hysteresis of gs responses to increasing/decreasing irradiance and the resulting rapid variations of intrinsic water‐use efficiency. Compared to the mechanistic model of temporal responses of gs by Kirschbaum, Gross & Pearcy, for which time constants were estimated with a large variance, our model estimated time constants with a higher precision. It is expected to improve predictions of water loss and water‐use efficiency in higher scale models by using a small number of parameters. 相似文献

Forest cover change directly affects biodiversity, the global carbon budget, and ecosystem function. Within Latin American and the Caribbean region (LAC), many studies have documented extensive deforestation, but there are also many local studies reporting forest recovery. These contrasting dynamics have been largely attributed to demographic and socio‐economic change. For example, local population change due to migration can stimulate forest recovery, while the increasing global demand for food can drive agriculture expansion. However, as no analysis has simultaneously evaluated deforestation and reforestation from the municipal to continental scale, we lack a comprehensive assessment of the spatial distribution of these processes. We overcame this limitation by producing wall‐to‐wall, annual maps of change in woody vegetation and other land‐cover classes between 2001 and 2010 for each of the 16,050 municipalities in LAC, and we used nonparametric Random Forest regression analyses to determine which environmental or population variables best explained the variation in woody vegetation change. Woody vegetation change was dominated by deforestation (?541,835 km2), particularly in the moist forest, dry forest, and savannas/shrublands biomes in South America. Extensive areas also recovered woody vegetation (+362,430 km2), particularly in regions too dry or too steep for modern agriculture. Deforestation in moist forests tended to occur in lowland areas with low population density, but woody cover change was not related to municipality‐scale population change. These results emphasize the importance of quantitating deforestation and reforestation at multiple spatial scales and linking these changes with global drivers such as the global demand for food. 相似文献

Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) is an obstetric complication characterised by placental insufficiency and secondary cardiovascular remodelling that can lead to cardiomyopathy in adulthood. Despite its aetiology and potential therapeutics are poorly understood, bioenergetic deficits have been demonstrated in adverse foetal and cardiac development. We aimed to evaluate the role of mitochondria in human pregnancies with IUGR. In a single‐site, cross‐sectional and observational study, we included placenta and maternal peripheral and neonatal cord blood mononuclear cells (PBMC and CBMC) from 14 IUGR and 22 control pregnancies. The following mitochondrial measurements were assessed: enzymatic activities of mitochondrial respiratory chain (MRC) complexes I, II, IV, I + III and II + III, oxygen consumption (cell and complex I‐stimulated respiration), mitochondrial content (citrate synthase [CS] activity and mitochondrial DNA copy number), total ATP levels and lipid peroxidation. Sirtuin3 expression was evaluated as a potential regulator of bioenergetic imbalance. Intrauterine growth restriction placental tissue showed a significant decrease of MRC CI enzymatic activity (P < 0.05) and CI‐stimulated oxygen consumption (P < 0.05) accompanied by a significant increase of Sirtuin3/β‐actin protein levels (P < 0.05). Maternal PBMC and neonatal CBMC from IUGR patients presented a not significant decrease in oxygen consumption (cell and CI‐stimulated respiration) and MRC enzymatic activities (CII and CIV). Moreover, CS activity was significantly reduced in IUGR new‐borns (P < 0.05). Total ATP levels and lipid peroxidation were preserved in all the studied tissues. Altered mitochondrial function of IUGR is especially present at placental and neonatal level, conveying potential targets to modulate obstetric outcome through dietary interventions aimed to regulate Sirtuin3 function. 相似文献

A strain of Micrococcus which was found to be proteolytic was evaluated for the effects of environmental conditions on its proteolytic activity against pork myofibrillar proteins using response surface methodology. Three strains of micrococci were also tested for the ability to produce free amino acids from pork myofibrils. Analysis of the effects of environmental conditions showed that proteolytic activity would be minimal under conditions normally found in fermented sausages, thereby suggesting that proteolysis in these products is largely due to endogenous meat enzymes. The three strains of micrococci were shown to produce free amino acids from pork myofibrils, thereby demonstrating the presence of peptidase activity in these strains. 相似文献

Three different software packages for the probe-level analysis of high-density oligonucleotide microarray data were compared using an experiment-derived data set that was validated using real-time PCR. The efficiency with which these three programs could identify true positives in this data set was assessed. In addition, estimates of false-positive and false-negative rates were determined. The performance of the programs using very small data sets was also compared, and recommendations for use are suggested. 相似文献
