Physiological and Biochemical Characteristics of Immobilized Champagne Yeasts and Their Participation in Champagnizing Processes: A Review

Methods for immobilizing champagne yeasts, physiological and biochemical characteristics of the immobilized cells, and problems of their utilization in the production of quality champagne wines are reviewed. Studies aimed at the development of efficient biocatalysts for champagnizing wines using bottle fermentation (methode champenoise) and tank processing (bulk, or Charmat process) based on the use of immobilized yeast cells are described. Data on the industrial use of such biocatalysts in countries manufacturing champagne wines are presented. Problems and prospects of further research in this field are discussed.     

A comparative study of the role of domestic cats and dogs in the epidemiology of toxoplasmosis]

A total of 2643 persons in 5 different regions were examined for toxoplasmosis by the immunofluorescence test and toxoplasmin skin test. The presence in the house of cats and dogs was taken into account. In two of the five regions under study there was revealed an increased incidence of toxoplasmosis in persons keeping cats; this confirmed the role of these animals as a source of toxoplasmosis infection. The absence of such increase in the incidence of the disease in other regions in explained by the character of buildings admitting migration of cats or the presence in the given region of other active sources of infection. Toxoplasmosis incidence in persons who kept or didn't keep dogs displayed no significant difference.     

Determination of the bactericidal strength of alveolar macrophages by using the NBT test

The NBT test on alveolar macrophages can be used for the indirect evaluation of their bactericidal potency. This test has made it possible to show that the development of the tuberculous process in the lungs is characterized by the increasing intensity of the reduction of NBT by alveolar macrophages, which indirectly indicates their considerable bactericidal potency. But 3-4 weeks after infection macrophages, though capable of considerable bactericidal action, do not react to stimulation by Mycobacterium tuberculosis.     

Genetic analysis of the Hsm3 protein domain structure in yeast <Emphasis Type="Italic">Saccharomyces cerevisiae</Emphasis>

Gene HSM3 encodes the Hsm3 protein involved in the minor branch in the system responsible for the correction of mismatched bases in DNA structure and controls replicative and reparative spontaneous mutagenesis in yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Spontaneous and UV-induced mutagenesis was studied in three mutant alleles of gene HSM3, and repair effectivity of artificial heteroduplexes was assessed in DNA molecule. The resuts of these studies allowed establishment of the protein domain structure of protein Hsm3 and functions of each domain: the N-terminal domain is responsible for binding to mispaired bases, and the C-terminal domain ensures the interaction with other proteins involved in the system of mismatched base correction.     

Time of origin of cells in the histiogenesis of the spinal cord]

In order to establish the moment of appearance of neuroblasts and ectoglia of the spinal cord the autoradiographic study with the use of H3-thymidine and C14-thmidine injected to pregnant mice with the intervals between injections 121/2 or 24 hours was undertaken. It was establised that spinal neurons were removed from the nervous tube beginning from the 10th up to 13th days of embroyogenesis. The motoneurons of the anterior horn were the first to appear (10th-12th days), the neurons of the intermideate zone were the next to appear (11th - 12th days) and the last were the neurons of posterior horn (13th day). Beginning from the 13th day of embryogenesis there appeared the ectoglia which migrated following meurblasts two days later. The saturation of the grey matter with glial cells and the saturation of the white matter with Schwann cells was brought about by means of additional multiplication at the site of the glioblasts removed from the nervous tube. The main function of the matrix layer neuroepithelium of the nervous tube as a provider of cells to the spinal cord terminated on the 15th day of embryogenesis.
