The paper recently published by Mothersill and Seymour (Radiat Environ Biophys 2013, doi: 10.1007/s00411-013-0472-y) is commented upon by emphasizing on the recommendation not to confound the fields of radiation protection and radiobiological science as a source of controversy. Instead, these authors are proposing a new vision which suggests novel lines of scientific investigations to be addressed. At the moment, these include moving beyond the conceptual approach of DNA alteration through energy deposition in cells, and exploring the striking parallel currently existing between the ongoing individual/population debate in radioecology and that for cells/tissues in radiobiology. Despite the fact that mites were used at the dawn of forensic entomology to elucidate the postmortem interval, their use in current cases remains quite low for procedural reasons such as inadequate taxonomic knowledge. A special interest is focused on the phoretic stages of some mite species, because the phoront-host specificity allows us to deduce in many occasions the presence of the carrier (usually Diptera or Coleoptera) although it has not been seen in the sampling performed in situ or in the autopsy room. In this article, we describe two cases where Poecilochirus austroasiaticus Vitzthum (Acari: Parasitidae) was sampled in the autopsy room. In the first case, we could sample the host, Thanatophilus ruficornis (Küster) (Coleoptera: Silphidae), which was still carrying phoretic stages of the mite on the body. That attachment allowed, by observing starvation/feeding periods as a function of the digestive tract filling, the establishment of chronological cycles of phoretic behavior, showing maximum peaks of phoronts during arrival and departure from the corpse and the lowest values in the phase of host feeding. From the sarcosaprophagous fauna, we were able to determine in this case a minimum postmortem interval of 10 days. In the second case, we found no Silphidae at the place where the corpse was found or at the autopsy, but a postmortem interval of 13 days could be established by the high specificity of this interspecific relationship and the departure from the corpse of this family of Coleoptera. 相似文献

Two controversies exist regarding the appropriate characterization of hierarchical and adaptive evolution in natural populations. In biology, there is the Wright–Fisher controversy over the relative roles of random genetic drift, natural selection, population structure, and interdemic selection in adaptive evolution begun by Sewall Wright and Ronald Aylmer Fisher. There is also the Units of Selection debate, spanning both the biological and the philosophical literature and including the impassioned group-selection debate. Why do these two discourses exist separately, and interact relatively little? We postulate that the reason for this schism can be found in the differing focus of each controversy, a deep difference itself determined by distinct general styles of scientific research guiding each discourse. That is, the Wright–Fisher debate focuses on adaptive process, and tends to be instructed by the mathematical modeling style, while the focus of the Units of Selection controversy is adaptive product, and is typically guided by the function style. The differences between the two discourses can be usefully tracked by examining their interpretations of two contested strategies for theorizing hierarchical selection: horizontal and vertical averaging. 相似文献

Present knowledge obtained by molecular dynamics (MD) simulation studies regarding the dynamics of water, both in the vicinity of biological membranes and within the proteinaceous water channels, also known as aquaporins (AQPs), is reviewed. A brief general summary of the water models most extensively employed in MD simulations (SPC, SPC/E, TIP3P, TIP4P), indicating their most relevant pros and cons, is likewise provided. Structural considerations of water are also discussed, based on different order parameters, which can be extracted from MD simulations as well as from experiments. Secondly, the behaviour of water in the neighbourhood of membranes by means of molecular dynamics simulations is addressed. Consequently, the comparison with previous experimental evidence is pointed out. In living cells, water is transported across the plasma membrane through the lipid bilayer and the aforementioned AQPs, which motivates this review to focus mostly on MD simulation studies of water within AQPs. Relevant contributions explaining peculiar properties of these channels are discussed, such as selectivity and gating. Water models used in these studies are also summarised. Finally, based on the information presented here, further MD studies are encouraged. 相似文献

Growth arrest specific 1 (GAS1) is a pleiotropic protein that induces apoptosis and cell arrest in different tumors, but it is also involved in the development of the nervous system and other tissues and organs. This dual ability is likely caused by its capacity to interact both by inhibiting the intracellular signaling cascade induced by glial cell-line derived neurotrophic factor and by facilitating the activity of the sonic hedgehog pathway. The presence of GAS1 mRNA has been described in adult mouse brain, and here we corroborated this observation. We then proceeded to determine the distribution of the protein in the adult central nervous system (CNS). We detected, by western blot analysis, expression of GAS1 in olfactory bulb, caudate-putamen, cerebral cortex, hippocampus, mesencephalon, medulla oblongata, cerebellum, and cervical spinal cord. To more carefully map the expression of GAS1, we performed double-label immunohistochemistry and noticed expression of GAS1 in neurons in all brain areas examined. We also observed expression of GAS1 in astroglial cells, albeit the pattern of expression was more restricted than that seen in neurons. Reports of successful predator attacks on primates are rare. Primates from all major radiations are particularly susceptible to raptors, carnivores, and snakes. Among New World primates, reports of snake predation are limited to medium- and small-bodied species. Here, we report the first documented case of successful predation of an atelid by a snake—an adult female Purús red howler monkey, Alouatta puruensis, that was subdued by a ca. 2-m-long Boa constrictor in an arboreal setting at a height of 7.5 m above the ground. The victim belonged to a group composed of six individuals (one adult male, two adult females, two juveniles, and one infant) that inhabited a ca. 2.5-ha forest fragment in the State of Rondônia, western Brazilian Amazon. The boa applied the species’ typical hunting behavior of striking and immediately coiling around its prey and then killing it through constriction (probably in less than 5 min), but the entire restraint period lasted 38 min. The attack occurred around noon. The howler was swallowed head-first in 76 min. The only group member to respond to the distress vocalization emitted by the victim was the other adult female, which was closest to the location where the attack occurred. This female ran toward the snake, also vocalizing, and hit it with her hands several times, but the snake did not react and she moved off to a nearby tree from where she watched most of the interaction. The remaining group members stayed resting at a height approximately 15 m above the victim in a nearby tree without showing any overt signs of stress, except for a single whimper vocalization. This event indicates that even large-bodied atelids are vulnerable to predation by large snakes and suggests that B. constrictor may be a more common predator of primates. 相似文献

Although environmental modification by ecosystem engineers influences species distributions and abundances and ecological process rates, general determinants of the environmental states of engineered landscapes are not well understood. Here we develop a general, spatially implicit model of engineered landscapes that includes parameters driving engineer populations (demographics, environmental modification) and environmental decay. We show that average environmental states and heterogeneities of landscapes are the result of a balance between parameters determining engineering rates and decay rates that can be expressed as a net engineering ratio (NER). This ratio highlights the need to include environmental decay in ecosystem engineering studies. Moreover, it defines a significant engineer as one that can alter the environment despite decay and generates expectations for different kinds of effects on the engineer, other species and ecological processes depending on ratio values. Finally, it suggests that, in general, decay places limits as to what can be inferred about engineer population dynamics from environmental dynamics and vice versa. 相似文献

The main objective of this study was to optimize a culture media for low scale biomass production of Pleurotus spp. Future applications of this optimization will be implemented for “in situ” rice straw degradation, increase soil nutrients availability, and lower residue and rice culture management costs. Soil samples were taken from different points in six important rice production cities in Colombia. For carbon and nitrogen source selection a factorial 42 design was carried out. The Plackett-Burman design permitted to detect carbon, nitrogen and inducer effects on fungus growth (response variable for all designs). This optimization was carried out by a Box-Behnken design. Finally a re-optimization assay for glucose concentration was performed by means of a One Factor design. Only 4/33 (12 %) isolates showed and important laccase or manganese peroxidase activity compared to Pleurotus ostreatus (HPB/P3). We obtained an increased biomass production in Pleurotus spp. (T1.1.) with glucose, followed by rice husk. Rice straw was considered an inducing agent for lignin degradation. Glucose was a significant component with positive effects, whereas Tween 80 and pH had negative effects. On the contrary, rice husk, yeast extract and CaCl2 were not significant components for increase the biomass production. Final media composition consisted of glucose 25 g L?1, yeast extract 5 g L?1, Tween 80 0.38 % (v/v), Rice husk 10 g L?1, CaCl2 1 g L?1, and pH 4.88 ± 0.2. The Box-Behnken polynomial prediction resulted to be lower than the experimental validation of the model (6.59 vs. 6.91 Log10 CFU ml?1 respectively). 相似文献
