Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) products were characterized for a repeated
sequence family (designated "O-150") of the human filarial parasite
Onchocerca volvulus. In phylogenetic inferences, the O-150 sequences
clustered into closely related groups, suggesting that concerted evolution
maintains sequence homology in this family. Using a novel mathematical
model based on a nested application of an analysis of variance, we
demonstrated that African rainforest and savannah strain parasite
populations are significantly different. In contrast, parasites collected
in the New World are indistinguishable from African savannah strains of O.
volvulus. This finding supports the hypothesis that onchocerciasis was
recently introduced into the New World, possibly as a result of the slave
trade.

Various approaches can minimize biomass accumulation in biotricking filters (BTF), which can be classified as: (1) physical, (2) chemical and (3) biological. Other approaches include (4) improvement of the bioreactor design and (5) modification of the mode and operational parameters. All of these methods involve either reduction in biomass growth or removal of excess biomass and each method has unique advantages and disadvantages as far as biomass reduction capability, sustainability and ease of integration to the system are concerned, which are compared and contrasted in this review. A careful comparison and analysis of these methods is a requisite to an optimum operation of a BTF system. 相似文献

Mice of the TO Swiss strain received diets containing different amounts of saturated or unsaturated fat throughout life. These diets produced characteristic changes in cardiac phospholipid fatty acid composition, but produced no significant differences in fatty acid composition of phospholipids from a crude membrane fraction of brain. When littermates of these animals were exposed to ethanol vapour in an inhalation chamber it was observed that mice which had received a diet high in saturated fat lost the righting reflex at an estimated concentration of ethanol in blood higher than that required for mice receiving a control diet, or a diet rich in polyunsaturated fat. Analysis of the brain membrane fraction from those animals which had received ethanol revealed that mice receiving the highly saturated fat diet now had a significantly greater proportion of saturated fatty acids in brain membrane phospholipids. These results are discussed in relation to the hypothesis that brain membrane lipid composition may influence the behavioural response to ethanol. 相似文献

The microalga Haematococcus lacustris is a source of astaxanthin used widely in aquaculture, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries. A new strain of Haematococcus (LCR‐26C‐1f) isolated from the New Zealand alpine zone was evaluated in this study. The influence of vitamins, micronutrients, various carbon and nitrogen sources were investigated to maximize biomass production in batch cultures using shake flasks. Supplementation of vitamins consisting of thiamine, biotin, and cyanocobalamin improved the cell density by 40% over the vitamin‐free medium. Out of the individual vitamins tested, thiamine was shown to be necessary to maintain high cell densities. The best nitrogen source tested was nitrate in the form of sodium nitrate, at a 40 mM concentration. Heterotrophic growth yielded much lower cell densities compared to autotrophic growth. The micronutrients iron and manganese were essential for growth. However, the best growth was obtained using a micronutrient mix that included iron, copper, cobalt, zinc, manganese and molybdenum. 相似文献

Microbial fuel cell (MFC) is an emerging technology for sustainable energy generation and waste treatment. This paper reviews the potential of a gaseous substrate when it is combined with a mediator in an MFC to generate electricity and to treat toxic gaseous pollutants. Most MFCs for waste water treatment often cannot use mediator to enhance the electron transfer from the microbe to the anode because of the difficulty in recovering the expensive and potentially toxic compound. Combining gas feeds with mediators is possible since the soluble mediator would remain in the anode chamber as the gas passes through the reactor. In addition, this type of MFC is possible to be integrated into an anaerobic biofiltration system (BF-MFC), where the biofilter removes the gaseous contaminant and produces the reduced mediator and the MFC produces the electricity and recycles the reoxidised mediator. This paper also talks about the past research on gaseous feed MFCs, and reviews the mechanism and strategies of electron transfer in MFC using redox mediator. The advantages, process parameters and challenges of BF-MFC are discussed. This knowledge is very much required in the design and scale up of BF-MFC. This paper will be useful for those who work in the area of gaseous pollutant treatment and electricity generation. 相似文献

To analyze continuously a stream from a bioreactor for the concentration of ammonium ion, the broth is adjusted to high pH
and conveyed to a small mixing chamber containing an ammonia electrode. The system has a delay of only 1 minute and a time
constant for response of approximately 1 minute. Fouling and leaching of the electrode membrane are prevented by a small,
sealed air gap between the electrode and the sample stream; membrane life is at least five days. 相似文献
