Background  

Sweat gland adenocarcinoma is a rare malignancy with high metastatic potential seen more commonly in later years of life. Scalp is the most common site of occurrence and it usually spreads to lymph nodes. Liver, lung and bones are the distant sites of metastasis with fatal results. The differentiation between apocrine and eccrine metastatic sweat gland carcinoma is often difficult. The criteria's are inadequate to be of any practical utility.  相似文献

3'-C-Trifloromethyl-beta-D-ribonucleoside derivatives bearing the five naturally occurring nucleic acid bases have been synthesized. All these derivatives were prepared by glycosylation reactions of purine and pyrimidine bases with a suitable peracylated 3-C-trifluoromethyl ribofuranose precursor. After deprotection, the resulting title nucleoside analogues were tested for their inhibitory properties against the replication of HIV, HBV and several RNA viruses. The synthesis and the study of two phosphorothiolate derivatives of 3'-azido-2',3'-dideoxythymidine (AZT) bearing a S-pivaloyl-2-thioethyl (tBuSATE) group and glucosyl residues associated to the phosphorus atom by a 2-oxyethyl link, are reported. 3'-fluoro-2',3'-dideoxy- (3) and 3'-azido-2',3'-dideoxy- (4) beta-L-ribofuranonucleoside derivatives of guanine have been synthesized and their antiviral properties examined. All these derivatives were regioselectively and stereospecifically prepared by glycosylation of 2-N-acetyl-6-O-(diphenylcarbamoyl)guanine 5 with a suitable peracylated L-xylo-furanose sugar 6, followed by appropriate chemical modifications. The yeastCandida albicans coaggregates with a variety of streptococcal species, an interaction that may promote oral colonization by yeast cells.C. albicans andCandida tropicalis are the yeasts most frequently isolated from the human oral cavity and our data demonstrate that both these species bind toStreptococcus gordonii NCTC 7869 while two otherCandida species (Candida krusei andCandida kefyr) do not. Adherence ofC. albicans was greatest when the yeast had been grown at 30° C to mid-exponential growth phase. For 21 strains ofC. albicans there was a positive correlation between the ability to adhere toS. gordonii and adherence to experimental salivary pellicle. Whole saliva either stimulated or slightly inhibited adherence ofC. albicans toS. gordonii depending on the streptococcal growth conditions. The results suggest that the major salivary adhesins and coaggregation adhesins ofC. albicans are co-expressed.  相似文献

The professional antigen presenting cell (APC) plays an essential role in the initiation and propagation of the acquired immune response. Thus, much work has been done in designing strategies that target vaccine antigen (Ag) to APC. Utilizing recombinant DNA technology, we have created a unique two-component system that delivers biotinylated Ag to the Fc gamma receptor type I (FcgammaRI) on APC. Our studies demonstrate that we can successfully engineer FcgammaRI-specific targeting element proteins that simultaneously bind both biotin and recognize FcgammaRI. Additionally, we are able to engineer biotinylated Ag, which form functional elements when adsorbed onto latex microspheres. Furthermore, the targeting and functional element components bind to each other and successfully form two-component immunogens. T-cell activation in response to targeted Ag-laden microspheres is 10- to 100-fold greater than the response to the non-targeted Ag-laden microspheres. This enhancement is 100- to 1000-fold greater than the responses generated to soluble Ag. Thus, our results suggest that specific targeting of Ag-laden microspheres to FcgammaRI may significantly enhance the adjuvant properties of microparticulate delivery systems. Further development of this system may help to elucidate the mechanisms involved in generating enhanced responses to APC-targeted vaccines and significantly advance vaccine technology.  相似文献

Early summer in the Arctic with extensive ice melt and break-up represents a dramatic change for sympagic–pelagic fauna below seasonal sea ice. As part of the International Polar Year-Circumpolar Flaw Lead system study (IPY-CFL), this investigation quantified zooplankton in the meltwater layer below landfast ice and remaining ice fauna below melting ice during June (2008) in Franklin Bay and Darnley Bay, Amundsen Gulf, Canada. The ice was in a state of advanced melt, with fully developed melt ponds. Intense melting resulted in a 0.3- to 0.5-m-thick meltwater layer below the ice, with a strong halocline to the Arctic water below. Zooplankton under the ice, in and below the meltwater layer, was sampled by SCUBA divers. Dense concentrations (max. 1,400 ind. m−3) of Calanus glacialis were associated with the meltwater layer, with dominant copepodid stages CIV and CV and high abundance of nauplii. Less abundant species included Pseudocalanus spp., Oithona similis and C. hyperboreus. The copepods were likely feeding on phytoplankton (0.5–2.3 mg Chl-a m−3) in the meltwater layer. Ice amphipods were present at low abundance (<10 ind. m−2) and wet biomass (<0.2 g m−2). Onisimus glacialis and Apherusa glacialis made up 64 and 51% of the total ice faunal abundance in Darnley Bay and Franklin Bay, respectively. During early summer, the autochthonous ice fauna becomes gradually replaced by allochthonous zooplankton, with an abundance boom near the meltwater layer. The ice amphipod bust occurs during late stages of melting and break-up, when their sympagic habitat is diminished then lost.  相似文献

Photographic and visual aerial surveys to determine current pup production of Northwest Atlantic harp seals were conducted off Newfoundland and in the Gulf of St. Lawrence during March 1999-Photographic surveys were conducted on all whelping concentrations between 14 and 24 March, whereas a visual survey was made of the southern Gulf concentrations on 14 March. Pup production was estimated to be 739,100 (SE = 96,300, CV = 13.0%) at the Front, 82,600 (SE = 22,500, CV = 27.2%) in the northern Gulf, and 176,200 (SE = 25,400, CV = 14.4%) in the southern Gulf (Magdalen Island) for a total of 997,900 (SE = 102,100, 10.2%). Changes in aerial survey estimates indicate that pup production has increased since 1994. A new method to correct for the temporal change in the proportion of pups present on the ice was examined by fitting the percentage of pups observed in three age-dependent stages to a Normal distribution. The results were compared to those obtained from a more complex model used previously. The Simple model produced slightly higher, and hence more conservative, estimates of the proportion of births that had occurred before the time of the survey than the Complex model. When using the Simple model fewer assumptions regarding the start date of pupping and the proportion of older pups remaining on the ice were required, the herd had to be followed for a shorter period, and a more convenient means of calculating confidence limits was available.  相似文献

Obstructive sleep apnea involves intermittent periods of airway occlusions that lead to repetitive oxygen desaturations. Exposure to chronic intermittent hypoxia (IH) in rats increases diurnal blood pressure and alters skeletal muscle physiology. The impact of IH on upper airway muscle function is unknown. We hypothesize that IH exposure increases upper airway collapsibility in rats due to alterations of the muscles surrounding the upper airway. Lean and obese rats were exposed to cyclic alterations in O(2) levels (20.6%-5%) every 90 s, 8 h/day for 6 days/wk for 12 wk. Following the exposure period, arterial pressure was recorded via the tail artery in conscious unrestrained rats. Mean arterial pressure was increased in lean IH but not in obese IH-exposed Zucker rats (P < 0.05). The pharyngeal pressure associated with airway collapse (P(crit)) was measured under anesthesia during baseline conditions and then during supramaximal stimulation of the hypoglossal nerve (cnXII). Baseline P(crit) was more positive (more collapsible) in lean but not obese rats following 12 wk of IH (P < 0.05), while supramaximal stimulation of cnXII increased airway stability (decreased P(crit)) in both lean and obese Zucker rats following IH to levels that were similar to their respective room air controls. The in vitro peak tension and the expression of the individual myosin heavy chain isoforms from the upper airway muscles were unaltered following IH. We conclude that IH leads to increases in baseline collapsibility in lean Zucker rats exposed to IH by nonmyogenic mechanisms.  相似文献
