The structure of the anal organ of Herpestes auropunctatus is described. The scent is analysed and is shown to contain a series of saturated carboxylic acids. The acids are shown to be the product of bacterial metabolism, the species involved are isolated and identified.  相似文献

This paper describes the structure of the otter anal scent sacs. The deposited secretion contains apocrine gland protein and polymucosaccharide and sebaceous gland lipid. Chemical analyses by gas-liquid chromatography and acrylamide gel electrophoresis revealed individual differences in the composition of secretion. The individual differences in protein bands as revealed by electrophoresis were stable with time and may be useful in following the movements of wild otters in the field.
A captive pair of otters produced deposits of secretion with a periodicity similar to that of the female oestrous cycle, with both sexes producing deposits around oestrus.  相似文献

The dry matter content of 18 samples of fish silage prepared from fish species or prawn offal varied from 190 to 274 g/kg (mean 239). Chemical composition (mean and range, g/kg dry matter) was: crude protein 686 (487–882); ether extract 100 (53–211); ash 163 (105–319); and total mercury 1.05 mg/kg (0.24–4.05 mg/kg).The nutritional value of fish silage, prepared from Ocean perch and Nannygai, was investigated for grower pigs. Wheat-based diets were formulated in which fish silage partially or completely replaced soya been meal as the protein supplement. The diets were evaluated over the 20 to 45 kg growth phase. Half the pigs were slaughtered at 45 kg live weight; the remainder were fed on the wheat and soya bean meal diet to 80 kg live weight in order to observe the effect of withdrawal of fish silage at 45 kg on subsequent growth performance and mercury content in the lean tissue.The addition of fish silage improved growth rate (P < 0.05) and food conversion ratio (P < 0.01) during the 20 to 45 kg growth phase. No adverse effects on carcass quality were observed. During the 45 to 80 kg growth phase, when all pigs were fed on the wheat and soya bean meal diet, all produced similar performance. Over the 20 to 80 kg growth phase, the beneficial effects of fish silage on growth rate and feed conversion were maintained.Methyl mercury content in the semi-membraneous muscle of pigs fed on fish silage and slaughtered at 45 kg live weight was 0.085 mg/kg on a wet weight basis. This decreased to 0.018 mg/kg in pigs that had the fish silage withdrawn from the diet during the 45 to 80 kg growth phase.  相似文献

We tested the hypothesis that capillary exchange of adenosine is influenced by the ability of endothelial cells (ECs) to take up adenosine. Triple-indicator diffusion experiments were performed by injecting [14C]adenosine, [3H]9-beta-D-arabinofuranosylhypoxanthine ( [3H]araH), and radioiodinated serum albumin (RISA) into the arterial perfusate of isolated nonworking guinea pig hearts. Tracer appearance in venous effluent was observed over time. The early extraction of [14C]adenosine was much higher than that of [3H]araH. Extracted [3H]araH returned to the vascular space, but [14C]adenosine did not. Quantitative analysis of the curves by using a mathematical model indicates that approximately half of the extracted adenosine enters ECs and is metabolized. The remainder enters the interstitium and is taken up by myocytes, ECs, or other cells and is metabolized. We conclude that uptake of adenosine by ECs represents a significant influence on the capillary exchange of adenosine.  相似文献

Spore differentiation and, in particular, arthrosporogenesis in a clinical strain of T. mentagrophytes was investigated using a variety of methods and by altering environmental conditions. Results are discussed with reference to the in vivo situation. Arthrospores were obtained in the presence of increased CO2 tension but not increased N2 tension. High humidity was necessary for arthrospore formation but maturity (i.e. crops of single spores) was associated with conditions of reduced humidity. Desiccation reduced arthrospore viability. Glucose and peptone based media were suitable for arthrospore formation. Arthrospores were produced at 30 degrees C and 37 degrees C, but 30 degrees C is preferred since chlamydospores were prevalent at 37 degrees C. Conditions for production of arthrospore, microconidial and mycelial suspensions are presented.  相似文献
