Validation of the ageing of deep-water fish is difficult and there are only a few instances where the rings on the otoliths have been shown to be laid down annually. Roundnose grenadier have been fished commercially in the North Atlantic since the 1960s and the adult fish have frequently been aged by counting the rings in otoliths or scales. All the ageing was done on the assumption that the rings in the otoliths or scales were annual. Between 1975 and 1992, the Scottish Association for Marine Science carried out seasonal trawling surveys in the Rockall Trough using a fine-meshed trawl, and collected otoliths from a wide size range of roundnose grenadier. An examination of the growing edge of otoliths from juvenile fish from these collections suggests that the rings in the otoliths are laid down annually. The broader, opaque zones which represent the growth phase were dominant between September and March. The thinner, hyaline zones were dominant between April and July. The apparent delay in the growth phase compared with most shallow-water species is discussed in relation to the availability of mesopelagic prey. 相似文献

The effects of glutamate, aspartate, glycine, proline, alanine, taurine, glycerol, glucose and lactate injections on the haemolymph levels of the crustancean hyperglycemic hormone and/or glucose and lactate in the shore crab, Carcinus maenas, were investigated. Only glucose and lactate caused significant changes of hyperglycaemic hormone levels. Glucose injections resulted in a drop of both hormone and lactate, while lactate had an opposite effect, i.e. it raised both crustacean hormone and glucose levels. The results suggest that during increases in glycolytic flux, lactate may cause a release of hormone by a positive feedback mechanism. The hormone would then stimulate glycogenolysis, thus increasing glucose availability. If more glucose is released than is metabolized, excess glucose may leak from the cells and suppress crustancean hyperglycemic hormone release from the X-organ/sinus gland complex by negative feedback.Abbreviations ABTS

We investigated the Nco I restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) of the tumor necrosis factor beta (TNFB) gene in 173 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), 192 unrelated healthy controls, and eleven panel families, all of German origin. The phenotype frequency of the TNFB*1 allele was significantly increased in patients compared to controls (63.6% vs 47.1%, RR = 1.96, p <0.002). The results of a two-point haplotype statistical analysis between TNFB and HLA alleles show that there is linkage disequilibrium between TNFB*1 and HLA-A1, Cw7, B8, DR3, DQ2, and C4A DE. The frequency of TNFB*1 was compared in SLE patients and controls in the presence or absence of each of these alleles. TNFB*1 is increased in patients over controls only in the presence of the mentioned alleles. Therefore, the whole haplotype A1, Cw7, B8, TNFB*1, C4A DE, DR3, DQ2 is increased in patients and it cannot be determined which of the genes carried by this haplotype is responsible for the susceptibility to SLE. In addition, two-locus associations were analyzed in 192 unrelated healthy controls for TNFB and class I alleles typed by serology, and for TNFB and class II alleles typed by polymerase chain reaction/oligonucleotide probes. We found positive linkage disequilibrium between TNFB*1 and the following alleles: HLA-A24, HLA-B8, DRB1*0301, DRB1*1104, DRB1*1302, DQA1*0501, DQB1*0201, DQB1*0604, and DPB1*0101. Analysis of polymerase chain reaction amplified products from the sixth intron of the human interleukin-1 gene reveals a high polymorphism (polymorphism information content = 0.51) in a Caucasian population. Altogether, seven alleles have been defined ranging from 620 to 1220bp. 1. We investigated whether Daphnia galeata × hyalina hybrids of Lake Constance and Lake Greifensee show the same pattern of life history parameters as previously reported for D. galeata × cucullata hybrids and whether such a pattern is consistent between Daphnia populations from those two lakes. 2. Hybrids in Lake Constance were intermediate in size compared with the parental species. Hybrids in Lake Greifensee were smaller than D. galeata. The intrinsic growth rate (r) of hybrids from Lake Constance was not significantly different from the faster growing parental taxon D. galeata. However, r of hybrids from Lake Greifensee was significantly lower than that of D. galeata. 3. The observed juvenile body length differences between the taxa varied with the clutch number. The first clutch juvenile lengths of the three taxa did not differ for Lake Constance. First clutch juveniles of Lake Greifensee D. galeata were smaller than hybrid first clutch juveniles. The third clutch juvenile length did not differ between taxa from Lake Greifensee, but D. galeata juveniles from Lake Constance were bigger than those of D. hyalina. 4. The life history pattern found in Lake Constance corresponds to previous findings from other studies. The hybrids in this lake combine the faster population growth of one parental species with a relatively small size. In the case of Lake Greifensee hybrids, the relatively large size of first clutch juveniles and the small size of the adults could be interpreted as dual adaptations to invertebrate and fish predation. The role of colony-stimulating factors (CSFs) in regulating the synthesis of thrombospondin 1 (TSP1) by cultured human macrophages is investigated. Macrophage (M)-CSF is shown rapidly and transiently to induce two predominant species of TSP1 mRNA. One of these species was 3.2 kb in size and appeared to be specific to M-CSF-stimulated macrophages. Adherent M-CSF-treated macrophages are also shown to express abundant surface cell-associated TSP rapidly when examined by indirect immunofluorescence staining. Granulocyte-macrophage (GM)-CSF induced TSP1 mRNA at a later time point, and this was attributable to the effects of endogenous M-CSF induced by the GM-CSF; the GM-CSF-treated cells did not display surface-associated TSP after 3 hr of treatment. Analysis of the TSP1 protein synthesised by the M-CSF-treated macrophages revealed the expected trimeric form of the molecule. In addition, an unidentified 95-kDa protein was found to be covalently associated with immunoreactive TSP1, and this appeared to be specific to the macrophages as it was not found in TSP1 precipitated from other cell types. Complex mutational events, including de novo inversion with deletion and duplication of sequence, have been observed but are difficult to model. We propose that nascent leading-strand misalignment upon the lagging-strand template during DNA replication can result in the inversion of sequence. The positioning of this misalignment and of the realignment of the leading strand back onto the leading-strand template will determine if the inversion is accompanied by deletion and duplication of sequence. We suggest that such strand misalignment-realignment events may occur at the replication fork during concurrent DNA replication. 相似文献
