The selection of suitable field sites for integrated control of Anopheles mosquitoes using the sterile insect technique (SIT) requires consideration of the full gamut of factors facing most proposed control strategies, but four criteria identify an ideal site: 1) a single malaria vector, 2) an unstructured, relatively low density target population, 3) isolation of the target population and 4) actual or potential malaria incidence. Such a site can exist in a diverse range of situations or can be created. Two contrasting SIT field sites are examined here: the desert-flanked Dongola Reach of the Nile River in Northern State, Sudan, where malaria is endemic, and the island of La Reunion, where autochthonous malaria is rare but risk is persistent. The single malaria-transmitting vector at both sites is Anopheles arabiensis. In Sudan, the target area is a narrow 500 km corridor stretching from the rocky terrain at the Fourth Cataract - just above the new Merowe Dam, to the northernmost edge of the species range, close to Egypt. Vector distribution and temporal changes in density depend on the Nile level, ambient temperature and human activities. On La Reunion, the An. arabiensis population is coastal, limited and divided into three areas by altitude and exposure to the trade winds on the east coast. Mosquito vectors for other diseases are an issue at both sites, but of primary importance on La Reunion due to the recent chikungunya epidemic. The similarities and differences between these two sites in terms of suitability are discussed in the context of area-wide integrated vector management incorporating the SIT.  相似文献

The global malaria situation, especially in Africa, and the problems frequently encountered in chemical control of vectors such as insecticide resistance, emphasize the urgency of research, development and implementation of new vector control technologies that are applicable at regional and local levels. The successful application of the sterile insect technique (SIT) for the control of the New World screwworm Cochliomyia hominivorax and several species of fruit flies has given impetus to the use of this method for suppression or elimination of malaria vectors in some areas of Africa including Northern State of Sudan. The research and development phase of the Northern State feasibility study has been started. Sudanese stakeholders are working side-by-side with the International Atomic Energy Agency in the activities of this important phase. Several ethical, legal and social issues associated with this approach arose during this phase of the project. They need to be seriously considered and handled with care. In this paper, these issues are described, and the current and proposed activities to overcome potential hurdles to ensure success of the project are listed.  相似文献

The community structure of caprellids inhabiting two species of seagrass (Cymodocea nodosa and Zostera marina) was investigated on the Andalusian coast, southern Spain, using uni and multivariate analyses. Three meadows were selected (Almería, AL; Málaga, MA; Cádiz, CA), and changes in seagrass cover and biomass were measured from 2004 to 2005. Four caprellid species were found; the density of Caprella acanthifera, Phtisica marina and Pseudoprotella phasma was correlated to seagrass biomass. No such correlation was found for Pariambus typicus, probably because this species inhabits sediments and does not cling to the seagrass leaves. We recorded a significant decrease in seagrass cover and biomass in MA due to illegal bottom trawling fisheries. Phtisica marina and P. typicus were favoured by this perturbation and increased their densities after the trawling activities. A survey of reports on caprellids in seagrass meadows around the world showed no clear latitudinal patterns in caprellid densities (ranging from 6 to 1,000 ind/m2 per meadow) and species diversity. While caprellid abundances in seagrass meadows are often very high, the number of species per meadow is low (range 1–5).  相似文献

Background  

Many studies have suggested that variability in the attractiveness of humans to host-seeking mosquitoes is caused by differences in the make-up of body emanations, and olfactory signals in particular. Most investigations have either been laboratory-based, utilising odour obtained from sections of the body, or have been done in the field with sampling methods that do not discriminate between visual, physical and chemical cues of the host. Accordingly, evidence for differential attractiveness based on body emanations remains sparse in spite of the far-reaching epidemiological implications of this phenomenon.  相似文献

A simple structured mathematical model coupled with a methodology of state and parameter estimation is developed for lipase production by Candida rugosa in batch fermentation. The model describes the system according to the following qualitative observations and hypothesis: Lipase production is induced by extracellular oleic acid present in the medium. The acid is transported into the cell where it is consumed, transformed, and stored. Lipase is excreted to the medium where it is distributed between the available oil-water interphase and aqueous phase. Cell growth is modulated by the intracellular substrate concentration. Model parameters have been determined and the whole model validated against experiments not used in their determination. The estimation problem consists in the estimation of three state variables (biomass, intra- and extracellular substrate) and two kinetic parameters by using only the on-line measurement provided by exhaust gas analysis. The presented estimation strategy divides the complex problem into three subproblems that can be solved by stable algorithms. The estimation of biomass (X) and the specific growth rate (mu), is achieved by a recursive prediction error algorithm using the on-line measurement of the carbon dioxide evolution rate. mu is then used to perform an estimation of intracellular substrate and the other kinetic parameter related to substrate transport (A) by an adaptive observer. Extracellular substrate is then evaluated by means of the estimated values of intracellular substrate and biomass through the material balance of the reactor. Simulation and experimental tests showed good performance of the developed estimator, which appears suitable to be used for process control and monitoring. (c) 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

The production of lipase by Candida rugosa in batch cultures was studied. The initial concentration of the carbon source employed, oleic acid, had an important effect on the final lipolytic activity levels. The maximum lipase/substrate yield and specific productivity obtained correspond to an initial oleic acid concentration of 2 g/l. At higher concentrations, up to 8 g/l oleic acid, specific productivity decreased. Lipase production was not observed below 1 g/l oleic acid. Lipase inactivation in culture broth due to surface forces and shear stress at the gas/liquid interface was not observed. There was no shear stress denaturation at stirring rates of 250, 500 and 750 rpm. No temperature inactivation was detected up to 50° C. Two different lipases with a similar molecular weight of 60kDa were purified from culture broth.  相似文献

During aging, there is a decrease in the activity of the 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase enzyme in rat liver. The "old" 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase enzyme is about 26% less active than the "young" enzyme. In this paper, some biochemical and chemical properties of this enzyme are studied. 2,4,6-Trinitro-benzenesulfonic acid measurements indicate that the old enzyme has 11 lysine residues less than the young enzyme. The proteolysis with trypsin produces more peptides in the young enzyme than in the old one. However, similar numbers of peptides were produced when endoproteinase Arg-C was used on both enzymes. Moreover, the treatment of the young enzyme with ascorbate for 15 min produces the loss of 8 lysine residues. These results suggest that during aging there is a modification of the lysine residue, and this could be involved in the loss of its enzymatic activity.  相似文献

Total cAMP levels were measured in the macroalgae Dictyota dichotoma, Gelidium sesquipedale and Ulva rigida under different light conditions in order to study its regulation either by phytochrome or photosynthesis. Incubation in red or far-red light did not promote a phytochrome-like response; instead, it showed a synergistic effect upon cAMP accumulation. cAMP levels seemed to depend on the amount of energy applied. The correlation between photosynthetic oxygen evolution and cAMP variations at sub-saturating white light irradiance pointed to photosynthetic electron transport as involved in the regulation of cAMP accumulation at least in G. sesquipedale and U. rigida. Inhibitors of thylakoidal and mitochondrial electron transport chains reduced cAMP levels in 70 to 99%. We conclude that cAMP accumulation could be regulated by photosynthetic activity rather than phytochrome in the macroalgae studied.  相似文献

Understanding the symbiotic interaction between Coxiella‐like endosymbionts (CLE) and their tick hosts is challenging due to lack of isolates and difficulties in tick functional assays. Here we sequenced the metagenome of a CLE population from wild Rhipicephalus sanguineus ticks (CRs) and compared it to the previously published genome of its close relative, CLE of R. turanicus (CRt). The tick hosts are closely related sympatric species, and their two endosymbiont genomes are highly similar with only minor differences in gene content. Both genomes encode numerous pseudogenes, consistent with an ongoing genome reduction process. In silico flux balance metabolic analysis (FBA) revealed the excess production of L‐proline for both genomes, indicating a possible proline transport from Coxiella to the tick. Additionally, both CR genomes encode multiple copies of the proline/betaine transporter, proP gene. Modelling additional Coxiellaceae members including other tick CLE, did not identify proline as an excreted metabolite. Although both CRs and CRt genomes encode intact B vitamin synthesis pathway genes, which are presumed to underlay the mechanism of CLE‐tick symbiosis, the FBA analysis indicated no changes for their products. Therefore, this study provides new testable hypotheses for the symbiosis mechanism and a better understanding of CLE genome evolution and diversity.  相似文献
