Evolutionary shifts in species-typical group size ('sociality') probably reflect natural selection on motivational processes such as social arousal, approach-avoidance, reward, stress/anxiety and dominance. Using four songbird species that differ selectively in sociality (one territorial, one modestly gregarious, and two highly gregarious species), we here examined immediate early gene (IEG) responses of relevant brain regions following exposure to a same-sex conspecific. The paradigm limited behavioural performance, thus species differences should reflect divergence in motivational and/or perceptual processes. Within the extended medial amygdala (which is involved in appetitive approach, social arousal and avoidance), we observed species differences in IEG response that are negatively graded in relation to sociality. In addition, brain areas that are involved in social stress and dominance-related behaviour (ventrolateral septum, anterior hypothalamus and lateral subdivision of the ventromedial hypothalamus) exhibited IEG responses that dichotomously distinguish the territorial species from the three gregarious species. The IEG responses of areas involved in reward (nucleus accumbens and ventral pallidum) and general stress processes (e.g. paraventricular hypothalamus, lateral bed nucleus of the stria terminalis and most areas of the lateral septum) do not correlate with sociality, indicating that social evolution has been accompanied by selection on a relatively discrete suite of motivational systems.  相似文献

Conditions are described under which monomeric [14C]methyl avidin binds to SDS-denatured biotin enzymes and remains bound through polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The location of radioactive proteins on the dried gel was determined by fluorography and their identity was established by subunit molecular weight. The relative quantity of bound radioactive avidin, stoichiometrically equivalent to the molar quantity of biotin protein, can be determined by scanning the fluorograph with a soft laser densitometer. To determine the absolute quantity of biotin protein, the radioactive areas of the dried gel were cut out, resolubilized, and assayed for radioactivity. Since the specific radioactivity of the [14C]methyl avidin was known, the quantity of avidin bound and therefore the quantity of biotin enzyme could be calculated. The method is illustrated by the analysis of purified acetyl CoA carboxylase and is applied to the analysis of biotin enzymes in isolated rat liver mitochondria.  相似文献

A sample of 594 Easter Islander palms was analyzed according to the topological method. Some suggestions for clarification of the topological approach were made, including clearer definition of the palmar triradii and substitution of the term "profile" for "formula." The frequency of Easter Islander profiles was compared against British and Australian Aborigine samples (Loesch, 1974; 1983a,b) and found to be significantly different for two of the ten most common combinations. The individual pattern elements, pattern intensities, a-b count, A-line exit, and atd angle were described, with population comparisons made when they were available.  相似文献

Monomeric [14C] methyl avidin was shown to bind to sodium dodecyl sulfate-denatured biotinyl proteins and remain bound through polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis which allowed their detection by fluorography. This method was used to show that purified rat liver acetyl CoA carboxylase contained two high molecular weight forms of the enzyme (MR = 241,000 and 252,000) while rapidly prepared, crude rat liver cytoplasm contained two larger molecular weight (MR = 257,000 and 270,000) forms. Thus, the enzyme had undergone substantial proteolysis during purification. The crude enzyme preparation also contained a smaller biotinyl protein (MR = 141,000) which is likely a proteolytic product of the larger forms of acetyl CoA carboxylase.  相似文献

Success of the shrimp aquaculture industry requires technological advances that increase production and environmental sustainability. Indoor, superintensive, aquaculture systems are being developed that permit year-round production of farmed shrimp at high densities. These systems are intended to overcome problems of disease susceptibility and of water quality issues from waste products, by operating as essentially closed systems that promote beneficial microbial communities (biofloc). The resulting biofloc can assimilate and detoxify wastes, may provide nutrition for the farmed organisms resulting in improved growth, and may aid in reducing disease initiated from external sources. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)-based metabolomic techniques were used to assess shrimp health during a full growout cycle from the nursery phase through harvest in a minimal-exchange, superintensive, biofloc system. Aberrant shrimp metabolomes were detected from a spike in total ammonia nitrogen in the nursery, from a reduced feeding period that was a consequence of surface scum build-up in the raceway, and from the stocking transition from the nursery to the growout raceway. The biochemical changes in the shrimp that were induced by the stressors were essential for survival and included nitrogen detoxification and energy conservation mechanisms. Inosine and trehalose may be general biomarkers of stress in Litopenaeus vannamei. This study demonstrates one aspect of the practicality of using NMR-based metabolomics to enhance the aquaculture industry by providing physiological insight into common environmental stresses that may limit growth or better explain reduced survival and production.  相似文献
