Abstract. GIS and remote sensing have emerged as distinct spatial data handling technologies with their own methods of data representation and analysis. Combining them as tools to support vegetation analysis and modeling thus presents a number of challenges. The paper begins by describing the major data sources, applications, and software characteristics of each technology, and then compares them within a consistent terminological framework that emphasizes the digital representation of continuously varying spatial data. Because the spatial continuum can be discretized in many different ways, and because each can only approximate the truth, both GIS and remote sensing are subject to error and uncertainty. Integration, and subsequent analysis and modeling, require that explicit attention be directed to uncertainty. The paper reviews the models of error that have been developed in recent years for spatial data and examines their use in the interface between GIS and remote sensing. The paper looks at the functional requirements of modeling, and includes discussion of error propagation. 相似文献

Abstract. 1. Aggregation of individuals, a basic behaviour in social species, plays an essential role in many aspects of animal life (reproduction, defence, and alimentation). Understanding how this phenomenon is modulated is important to comprehend the social organisation of the group.
2. In social insects, aggregation is influenced by environmental (e.g. the light level) and social (e.g. polyethism in monomorphic ants) factors. Ants display a great variation of biological characteristics (e.g. queen number, polymorphism, division of labour, etc.) that are likely to influence the level of inter-attraction and so the aggregation.
3. The present research focused on one biological characteristic: the morphological castes (minors, majors), testing the hypothesis that minors will aggregate more than majors due to their greater need to fight against the loss of heat and to increase their self-protection.
4. Aggregation experiments were conducted on two highly polymorphic species, Atta sexdens rubropilosa and Solenopsis interrupta , using the two extreme morphological castes (majors and minors).
5. All castes exhibited a low level of aggregation: 40–50% of workers assembled for both species, the biggest cluster involving 20% of the total population. The lack of difference between morphological castes in the aggregation shows the weak influence of polymorphism on the interactions between ants.
6. Seaweed flies show an increase in mortality rates when exposed to brown algae. The seaweed stimulates females to oviposit and males to mount females. Females typically respond to male mounts by performing a violent rejection response.
2. Here the contribution of sexual conflict to the increase in mortality seen in the presence of seaweed was determined. The survival of single and mixed sex pairs of flies was followed in the presence and absence of seaweed.

In the presence of seaweed, female survival was lower when paired with a male. Patients with biliary strictures often represent a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge, due to the site and complexity of biliary obstruction and wide differential diagnosis. Multidisciplinary decision making is required to reach an accurate and timely diagnosis and to plan optimal care. Developments in endoscopic ultrasound and peroral cholangioscopy have advanced the diagnostic yield of biliary endoscopy, and novel optical imaging techniques are emerging. Endoscopic approaches to biliary drainage are preferred in most scenarios, and recent advances in therapeutic endoscopic ultrasound allow drainage where the previous alternatives were only percutaneous or surgical. Here we review recent advances in endoscopic practice for the diagnosis and management of biliary strictures. Areas of skin approximately 1.5 cm in diameter on the legs of mice were made hyperthermic (30 min at 42.7 degrees C) by exposure to an ultrasound beam (780 kHz), a single dose of X irradiation (2000 rad), or a combination of these treatments. After 35 days, when the acute reaction had reached a steady state, the same tissue was given a second treatment by either hyperthermia, irradiation, or a combination of hyperthermia and irradiation. When the first treatment was irradiation and the second treatment was either irradiation or a combination of hyperthermia and irradiation, the acute skin reactions were similar to those of skin not previously irradiated, indicating a large proportion of recovery from the first irradiation. When irradiation was the first treatment, a comparison of second treatments by hyperthermia plus irradiation with irradiation alone showed a thermal enhancement of 1.45. When the first treatment was hyperthermia plus irradiation, a comparison of second treatments by hyperthermia plus irradiation with irradiation also showed an enhancement factor of 1.45 for the combined treatment. 相似文献
