Insectivorous bats have often been touted as biological control for mosquito populations. However, mosquitoes generally represent only a small proportion of bat diet. Given the small size of mosquitoes, restrictions imposed on prey detectability by low frequency echolocation, and variable field metabolic rates (FMR), mosquitoes may not be available to or profitable for all bats. This study investigated whether consumption of mosquitoes was influenced by bat size, which is negatively correlated with echolocation frequency but positively correlated with bat FMR. To assess this, we investigated diets of five eastern Australian bat species (Vespadelus vulturnus Thomas, V. pumilus Gray, Miniopterus australis Tomes, Nyctophilus gouldi Tomes and Chalinolobus gouldii Gray) ranging in size from 4-14 g in coastal forest, using molecular analysis of fecal DNA. Abundances of potential mosquito and non-mosquito prey were concurrently measured to provide data on relative prey abundance. Aedes vigilax was locally the most abundant mosquito species, while Lepidoptera the most abundant insect order. A diverse range of prey was detected in bat feces, although members of Lepidoptera dominated, reflecting relative abundance at trap sites. Consumption of mosquitoes was restricted to V. vulturnus and V. pumilus, two smaller sized bats (4 and 4.5 g). Although mosquitoes were not commonly detected in feces of V. pumilus, they were present in feces of 55 % of V. vulturnus individuals. To meet nightly FMR requirements, Vespadelus spp. would need to consume ~600-660 mosquitoes on a mosquito-only diet, or ~160-180 similar sized moths on a moth-only diet. Lower relative profitability of mosquitoes may provide an explanation for the low level of mosquito consumption among these bats and the absence of mosquitoes in feces of larger bats. Smaller sized bats, especially V. vulturnus, are likely to be those most sensitive to reductions in mosquito abundance and should be monitored during mosquito control activities.  相似文献

We report here the ability of two freshwater living cyanobacteria, Chroococcus multicoloratus Wood and Oscillatoria trichoides Szafer, to remove lead (Pb2+) from aqueous solutions in batch system, wherein the effect of Pb2+ on the growth rate of both the cyanobacteria was evaluated. The influence of sorption time, initial pH, initial Pb2+ ion concentration, culture density and the biosorption equilibrium kinetics was examined. Biosorption capacity was found to be maximum between a pH of 5 and 5.14, on the second day of exposure and at an initial concentration of 80 and 60 mg L?1 for C. multicoloratus and O. trichoides, respectively. An initial concentration in the range of 10–120 mg L?1 significantly decreased the growth and efficiency of Pb2+ removal. The maximum sorptive capacity (q max) obtained from the Langmuir isotherm for C. multicoloratus and O. trichoides was 178.57 and 106.38 mg g?1, respectively. The pseudo-second-order model was found to correlate well with the experimental data. Metal recovery of 70–77 % was obtained with HCl as a desorbing agent. The results of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy indicated the participation of hydroxyl, carboxyl and amino groups in the biosorption process. Based on our observations, we suggest that both species appear to be potential viable biosorbents for mildly acidic water contaminated with Pb2+.  相似文献

Amyloid beta (Aβ) is a major causative agent of Alzheimer disease (AD). This neurotoxic peptide is generated as a result of the cleavage of the Amyloid-Precursor-Protein (APP) by the action of β-secretase and γ-secretase. The neurotoxicity was previously thought to be the result of aggregation. However, recent studies suggest that the interaction of Aβ with numerous cell surface receptors such as N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA), receptor for advanced glycosylation end products (RAGE), P75 neurotrophin receptor (P75NTR) as well as cell surface proteins such as the cellular prion protein (PrPc) and heparan sulfate proteoglycans (HSPG) strongly enhances Aβ induced apoptosis and thereby contributes to neurotoxicity. This review focuses on the molecular mechanism resulting in Aβ-shedding as well as Aβ-induced apoptotic processes, genetic risk factors for familial AD and interactions of Aβ with cell surface receptors and proteins, with particular emphasis on the cellular prion protein. Furthermore, comparisons are drawn between AD and prion disorders and the role of laminin, an extracellular matrix protein, glycosaminoglycans and the 37 kDa/67 kDa laminin receptor (LRP/LR) have been highlighted with regards to both neurodegenerative diseases.Key words: Alzheimer disease, amyloid β, apoptosis, 37 kDa/67 kDa laminin receptor, prion proteinsAlzheimer disease (AD), primarily defined by psychiatrist Alois Alzheimer in 1906, is a neurodegenerative disorder and currently exhibits a prevalence that “doubles approximately every five years from 0.5% at the common age of onset-65 years old.”1 This disease is the most common form of dementia afflicting the elderly and at present affects in excess of 37 million people globally2 and it is predicted that 100 million people will be living with the disease by 2050.3AD has received mounting scientific interest and has stimulated tireless research endeavours not only due to the complex mechanism by which it is caused; the multitude of contributing factors and contradictions which have arisen between hypotheses and acquired results, but also due to the rise in life expectancies4 owing to the advent of modern medicine, which has socio-economic implications particularly in terms of strain placed upon national health systems.  相似文献

This study was undertaken to develop tomato plants with broad resistanceto tospoviruses which are a major limiting factor to tomato productionworldwide. A nontransgenic tomato line Stevens-Rodale (S-R), six transgenictomato lines expressing the nucleocapsid (N) protein gene of the lettuceisolate of tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV-BL), and progeny of the crosses between S-Rand three of the transgenic lines homozygous for the N gene were evaluated fortheir resistance to tospovirus infection in greenhouse inoculation tests. S-Rhas the Sw-5 gene that confers resistance to several TSWVisolates. The six transgenic lines showed high levels of resistance wheninoculated with either TSWV-BL or a tomato isolate from Hawaii (TSWV-H).However, these same plants were highly susceptible to the Brazilian isolate ofgroundnut ringspot virus (GRSV-BR). Plants with the Sw-5gene were resistant to TSWV-BL and GRSV-BR, but were susceptible to TSWV-H.When inoculated with any of the three viruses, the F1 progeny of thecrosses exhibited a susceptible, tolerant, or resistant phenotype with a higherproportion of the plants being either tolerant or resistant. When F2progeny from F1 resistant plants of each cross were inoculated withany of the three viruses, a higher proportion of tolerant and resistant plantswas observed compared to the F1 progeny. Our results show thepotential to obtain broad resistance to tospoviruses by combining transgenicand natural resistance in a single plant.  相似文献

Poly(3-(tert-butoxycarbonyl)-N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) has been synthesized and characterized by gel permeation chromatography, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, NMR spectroscopy, and thermal analysis. The polymer is a chemically amplified photoresist. Arrays of lines with 25 microm width and 25 microm spacing were successfully patterned with this polymer by photolithography. Rat fibroblast cells were seeded on these patterned surfaces as well as the smooth glass surface. Phase contrast microscopy showed that cells on the patterned surfaces were strongly aligned and elongated along the grooves as compared to randomly spreading on the smooth surface. Since controlling cell orientation is critical for the development of advanced forms of tissue repair and cell engineering therapies, for example, peripheral nerve repair, production of tendon and ligament substitutes in vitro, and control of microvascular repair, the described polymer may be useful for applications in tissue reconstruction.  相似文献

Aspergillus penicillioides is a true halophile, present in diverse econiches from the hypersaline athalassohaline Dead Sea and the thalassohaline solar salterns, to the polyhaline estuaries and mangroves of Goa-India. Thirty-nine isolates from these environments were seen to be moderate halophiles, stenohaline or euryhaline in nature, with comparable salt tolerance indices. They had an obligate need for a low water activity and were unable to grow on a regular defined medium such as Czapek Dox Agar, or on various nutrient rich agar media such as Malt Extract, Potato Dextrose and Sabouraud Agar; however, growth was obtained on all these media when amended with 10 % solar salt. In the absence of added salt, the conidia either did not germinate, or when germinated, distortions and lysis were seen in the short mycelial forms; on media with salt, the mycelia and vesicles appeared normal.  相似文献

Excess of copper ion (>2 mg/L) in water is toxic to human beings and the ecosystem. Various water treatment technologies for copper remediation have been investigated in the past. Along with industrial effluents, Bordeaux mixture is also a noteworthy copper contamination source in the agricultural ecosystem. In our study, the biosorbent efficiency of dried orange peel was investigated through an environment-friendly process for the removal of cupric ions. Effects of pH, adsorbate concentration, adsorbent dosage, and temperature for the removal of Cu (II) were studied. Slightly acidic environment (pH = 6) was found to be optimum for removal of copper. The equilibrium data were well fitted with the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. The surface morphology of the adsorbent was studied using scanning electron microscope. Crystalline nonhomogenous surface was observed after copper adsorption. Desorption study indicated that 0.1N H2SO4 is the best eluent for the removal of adsorbed copper from the powdered dried orange peel.  相似文献
