Effects of adaptation to exposure to short-term stress on indices of resistance of energy metabolism and contractile function of the myocardium to acute hypoxic hypoxia and reoxygenation

Effect of preliminary adaptation to immobilization stress with progressive duration from 15 min. to 1 h (every second day, 8 sessions) on the resistance of indices of myocardial energy metabolism and contractile function to acute hypoxic hypoxia and subsequent reoxygenation was studied. It was shown, that adaptation to short-term stress exposure by some way provided the retention of activities of important enzymes like creatine-phosphokinase and phosphorylase under the harmful action of acute hypoxia and subsequent reoxygenation. At the same time, the ATP restoration and the CP super-restoration were observed during reoxygenation. This effect, in its turn, was accompanied by a more pronounced super-restoration of the heart contractile function than in control.     

The effect of chondroitin sulfate preparations on wound healing and the strength of the surgical scar

An experimental investigation of the ability of the chondroitinsulphate preparation produced from cattle tracheas, of rumalon and chonsuride to stimulate the regeneration of cutaneous coverings in case of their injury was carried out. A strength of the surgical cicatrix and its elongation at rupture in two weeks' injections of chondroitinsulphate increased in comparison with control. A stimulating effect of chondroitinsulphate to regeneration of flesh wound in case of local single action didn't differ essentially from the effect of chonsuride. In case of application of the preparations, an area of wound for the rats received chondroitinsulphate was already on the eighth day twice as less in comparison with the animals treated with chonsuride. Thus, a stimulating effect of chondroitinsulphate preparation to the regeneration of damaged cutaneous coverings by both parenteral and local administration was shown.     

Outcomes after Chemotherapy with WHO Category II Regimen in a Population with High Prevalence of Drug Resistant Tuberculosis

Standard short course chemotherapy is recommended by the World Health Organization to control tuberculosis worldwide. However, in settings with high drug resistance, first line standard regimens are linked with high treatment failure. We evaluated treatment outcomes after standardized chemotherapy with the WHO recommended category II retreatment regimen in a prison with a high prevalence of drug resistant tuberculosis (TB). A cohort of 233 culture positive TB patients was followed through smear microscopy, culture, drug susceptibility testing and DNA fingerprinting at baseline, after 3 months and at the end of treatment. Overall 172 patients (74%) became culture negative, while 43 (18%) remained positive at the end of treatment. Among those 43 cases, 58% of failures were determined to be due to treatment with an inadequate drug regimen and 42% to either an initial mixed infection or re-infection while under treatment. Overall, drug resistance amplification during treatment occurred in 3.4% of the patient cohort. This study demonstrates that treatment failure is linked to initial drug resistance, that amplification of drug resistance occurs, and that mixed infection and re-infection during standard treatment contribute to treatment failure in confined settings with high prevalence of drug resistance.     

Synthesis of 14ß-cyanomethyl derivatives of estradiol and the estimation of their antineoplastic activity in vitro

14ß-Cyanomethyl derivatives of estrone and estradiol have been synthesized starting from 3-benzoyloxyestra-1,3,5(10),14,16-pentaen-17-yl acetate. A comparative study of their cytotoxicity in breast carcinoma ZR-75-1, cervix uteri carcinoma M-HeLa, uterus leiomyosarcoma SK-UT-1B, breast adenocarcinoma MCF-7, ovary teratocarcinoma PA-1, acute myelogenous leukemia KG-1, and Burkitt’s lymphoma Raji cells has been performed.     

Thrombosis prophylaxis using plasmin and its combination with alpha-adrenoreceptor antagonists]

Using two models of experimental thrombosis (arterio-venous shunt and Wessler's model) the effect of plasmin and its combination with alpha-adrenoreceptor antagonists on the formation of thrombus was studied on white rats. It was established that the efficacy of prophylactic of thrombosis by plasmin only was low: middle ball of thrombosis was 2.5-3.0. The combination of plasmin with alpha-adrenoblockers dihydroergotoxine or prazosin under these conditions is most efficient against the formation of thrombus (middle ball of thrombus in this case was 0.8-1.1). Prazosin under certain conditions have some advantages.     

Effect of Coriolus hirsutus laccase on atrazine adsorption and desorption by different types of soil

Study of adsorption-desorption behavior of herbicide atrazine in soils of different geographical zones in the presence of Coriolus hirsutus laccase was performed. Laccase was shown to significantly increase adsorption coefficient and to facilitate irreversible adsorption of atrazine to soil. Supposably, laccase catalyzes oxidative binding of atrazine to soil.     

The biological function of a fragment of the neurotrophic factor from pigment epithelium: Structural and functional homology with the differentiation factor of the HL-60 cell line

It was shown that the full-size neurotrophic factor from pigment epithelium (PEDF) induces the cell differentiation of the human promyelocyte leukemia cell line HL-60. A structural analysis of PEDF revealed in itsC-terminal region a six-membered peptide fragment PEDF-(352-357) (PEDF-6) whose sequence is highly homologous to the 41–46 fragment of the active site of the human leukocyte differentiation factor HLDF (HLDF-6). The biological effect of PEDF and synthetic peptides PEDF-6 and HLDF-6 on the HL-60 cells and the early gastrula ectoderm ofXenopus laevis embryos was studied. On the basis of the structural and functional homologies of HLDF, PEDF, and their homologous peptides and the computer models of the spatial structures of the full-size PEDF and the PEDF with theC-terminal fragment split off tby the cleavage of the Leu³⁸⁰-Thr³⁸¹ bond in the serpin loop, a hypothesis on the functional role of the serpin loop in PEDF was put forward.     

Calorimetric study of the order-disorder conformational transition in succinoglycan

Thermally induced order-disorder conformational transition in succinoglycan was studied using the method of high-sensitivity differential scanning microcalorimetry within the range of polysaccharide concentrations from 0.1 to 3.5 mg mL⁻¹ at NaCl concentrations 0, 0.01, and 0.1M. The positions and shapes of the excess heat capacity curves depended substantially on both the NaCl and polysaccharide concentrations. At low polysaccharide concentrations in salt-free solution the experimental curves were closely approximated by the two-state model suggesting the transition mechanism to be of the single helix-coil type. With increasing polysaccharide and/or NaCl concentration, the experimental curves changed significantly in symmetry, which indicated a changing transition mechanism. At high polysaccharide concentrations or in the presence of the salt, the order-disorder transition of succinoglycan was shown to include two stages: the cooperative dissociation of the helix dimer and subsequent two-state melting of the helix monomer. The dependence of thermodynamic parameters for the dissociation and melting of helix structures in succinoglycan on NaCl and polysaccharide concentrations was obtained by fitting the experimental excess heat capacity curves. The cooperativity parameter σ for the single helix-coil transition as well as the average length of the helix segment of succinoglycan were calculated. Some features of succinoglycan ordering in solution are discussed. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
