Aims To test a key prevision of the dynamic equilibrium theory of island biogeography, namely that changes in species numbers on islands over time (hereafter, species trajectories) are equilibrial, and to characterize aspects of the dynamical properties of species change over time using a model‐independent test. Methods We tested for regulatory equilibrium and non‐random structure in species numbers through time by comparing observed correlation coefficients at lag‐k for species trajectories from four true islands and two habitat islands. First, we estimated the shape of the autocorrelation function for each observed species trajectory by calculating correlation coefficients of the observed data between pairs of values Nt?k and Nt separated by lag‐k (k = 1, 2, …, N ? 1). Second, we tested the observed correlation coefficients at each lag against a distribution of correlation coefficients generated by randomly ordering observed numbers in the species trajectories. Results The patterns of autocorrelation functions for all but one of the observed species trajectories did not exhibit evidence of regulatory equilibrium, and, in fact, closely matched what would be expected from a non‐stationary or ‘random walk’ process. The majority of the correlation coefficients generated from the observed species trajectories did not deviate significantly from correlation coefficients produced by the randomized trajectories. However, there was strong evidence of unusual positive autocorrelation at small time lags for birds on islands measured annually (2‐ to 4‐year lags) and for arthropods on islands measured weekly (7‐ to 8‐week lags), suggesting some degree of structure in change in species richness over time. Main conclusions The autocorrelation function patterns for all but one of the observed species trajectories showed various forms of non‐stationarity. These types of patterns suggest that the numbers of species through time gradually wandered away from their initial sizes. Our model‐independent test of individual correlation coefficients revealed significant structure in the observed species trajectories. These trajectories appear to be non‐random at relatively short lag intervals, indicating a process with short memory.  相似文献

Traditional metapopulation theory classifies a metapopulation as a spatially homogeneous population that persists on neighboring habitat patches. The fate of each population on a habitat patch is a function of a balance between births and deaths via establishment of new populations through migration to neighboring patches. In this study, we expand upon traditional metapopulation models by incorporating spatial heterogeneity into a previously studied two-patch nonlinear ordinary differential equation metapopulation model, in which the growth of a general prey species is logistic and growth of a general predator species displays a Holling type II functional response. The model described in this work assumes that migration by generalist predator and prey populations between habitat patches occurs via a migratory corridor. Thus, persistence of species is a function of local population dynamics and migration between spatially heterogeneous habitat patches. Numerical results generated by our model demonstrate that population densities exhibit periodic plane-wave phenomena, which appear to be functions of differences in migration rates between generalist predator and prey populations. We compare results generated from our model to results generated by similar, but less ecologically realistic work, and to observed population dynamics in natural metapopulations.  相似文献

Phytoremediation and its efficiency--influenced by several factors-is prime concern in reduction of environment contamination with heavy metals. The aim of the study was to estimate in controlled conditions--in relation to the natural Ca/Mg ratio 4:1--the influence of different Ca/Mg ratios (1:1/4, 20:1, 1:10) on selected heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn) accumulation efficiency shown by three morphological parts of Salix viminalis 'Cinamomea' (cane bark, shoots and roots). Accumulation of heavy metals in experimental conditions was significantly Ca/Mg ratio dependent, and occurred in the following order: 1:10 > 4:1 > 20:1 > 1:1/4. The highest accumulation under 0.5 mM solutions (as compared to 0.1 mM) was noted for copper and zinc, and the lowest for cadmium. Biometric parameters of Salix viminalis cuttings revealed the highest biomass productivity under 20:1 and 4:1 Ca/Mg ratios. In the case of shoot length increase, both metal concentration and kind of metal present in the solution were important. The results indicate that higher calcium ion concentration in solution (Ca/Mg 20:1) stimulates Salix viminalis growth by 3 fold when compared to other Ca/Mg ratio. It can be an important factor in remediation of the environment with this plant.  相似文献

The recent molecular identification of two thiamine transporters, SLC19A2 (THTR1) and SLC19A3 (THTR2), has provided the opportunity to study thiamine transporter gene expression in human malignancies. We compared RNA levels of both THTR1 and THTR2 in a panel of human breast tumors and corresponding normal tissues. THTR2 RNA levels were down-regulated in breast cancer to 14% of the level found in corresponding normal tissues, while THTR1 levels were unchanged. Both thiamine transport genes were cloned and expressed in a breast cancer cell line to examine the impact of reconstituted thiamine transport gene expression on drug and radiation sensitivity and on resistance to apoptosis. THTR2-transfected breast cancer cells showed a 2.5-fold increase in specific THTR2 activity and a 3-fold increase in cytotoxicity against a bromoacetyl ester derivative of thiamine. Surprisingly, these cells also showed a 3-fold increase in sensitivity to doxorubicin and an increase in sensitivity to ionizing radiation, but no change in sensitivity to methotrexate or paclitaxel. TUNEL assays demonstrate an increase in apoptosis in THTR2-transfected cells exposed to doxorubicin and radiation, and Western blot analysis suggests that apoptosis associated with these cytotoxic stresses is mediated at least in part by a caspase-3-dependent pathway. Therefore, thiamine transporter THTR2 gene expression is down-regulated in breast cancer, which may contribute to resistance to apoptosis in these tumors.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to estimate occurrence of ochratoxin A (OA) in feeds and the metabolite residues in porcine blood serum in Poland. Samples were collected in the period from February to May, 1999, in the southern Wielkopolska region. Altogether 40 and 45 samples of feed and porcine blood serum, respectively, were analyzed for OA. Percentage of samples contaminated with OA, both in case of feeds and blood, collected in the winter season was considerably higher than that for the spring season. The percentages for feeds were as follows: 47.6 and 26.3 %, while for porcine serum: 66.7 and 50.0 %, respectively winter and spring. In 25 % of cases ochratoxin A was present in both types of investigated material (feed, blood), whereas in 27.5 % of samples this metabolite was detected in blood only, or in 7.5 % only in the feed. The presence of OA was found neither in the feed nor in the serum in 40 % of all cases. In subgroups (feed, blood) the concentration in the whole collective of positive samples were in the range 0.3–13.5 ng/g and 0.3–69.5 ng/ml, respectively, while median values were 2.3 ng/g and 6.0 ng/ml. Only one feed and three porcine serum samples, were found to be contaminated at concentration levels higher than 10 ng/g or 10 ng/ml.  相似文献

Beauvericin is a cyclohexadepsipeptide mycotoxin which has insecticidal properties and which can induce apoptosis in mammalian cells. Beauvericin is produced by some entomo- and phytopathogenic Fusarium species (Fusarium proliferatum, F. semitectum, and F. subglutinans) and occurs naturally on corn and corn-based foods and feeds infected by Fusarium spp. We tested 94 Fusarium isolates belonging to 25 taxa, 21 in 6 of the 12 sections of the Fusarium genus and 4 that have been described recently, for the ability to produce beauvericin. Beauvericin was produced by the following species (with the number of toxigenic strains compared with the number of tested strains given in parentheses): Fusarium acuminatum var. acuminatum (1 of 4), Fusarium acuminatum var. armeniacum (1 of 3), F. anthophilum (1 of 2), F. avenaceum (1 of 6), F. beomiforme (1 of 1), F. dlamini (2 of 2), F. equiseti (2 of 3), F. longipes (1 of 2), F. nygamai (2 of 2), F. oxysporum (4 of 7), F. poae (4 of 4), F. sambucinum (12 of 14), and F. subglutinans (3 of 3). These results indicate that beauvericin is produced by many species in the genus Fusarium and that it may be a contaminant of cereals other than maize.  相似文献

Unlike seed plants where global biogeographical patterns typically involve interspecific phylogenetic history, spore‐producing bryophyte species often have intercontinental distributions that are best understood from a population genetic perspective. We sought to understand how reproductive processes, especially dispersal, have contributed to the intercontinental ‘Pacific Rim’ distribution of Sphagnum miyabeanum. In total, 295 gametophyte plants from western North America (California, Oregon, British Columbia, Alaska), Russia, Japan, and China were genotyped at 12 microsatellite loci. Nucleotide sequences were obtained for seven anonymous nuclear loci plus two plastid regions from 21 plants of S. miyabeanum and two outgroup species. We detected weak but significant genetic differentiation among plants from China, Japan, Alaska, British Columbia, and the western USA. Alaskan plants are genetically most similar to Asian plants, and British Columbian plants are most similar to those in the western USA. There is detectable migration between regions, with especially high levels between Alaska and Asia (China and Japan). Migration appears to be recent and/or ongoing, and more or less equivalent in both directions. There is weak (but significant) isolation‐by‐distance within geographical regions, and the slope of the regression of genetic on geographical distance differs for Asian versus North American plants. A distinctive Vancouver Island morphotype is very weakly differentiated, and does not appear to be reproductively isolated from plants of the normal morphotype. The intercontinental geographical range of S. miyabeanum reflects recent and probably ongoing migration, facilitated by the production of tiny spores capable of effective long distance dispersal. The results of the present study are consistent with Pleistocene survival of S. miyabeanum in unglaciated Beringia, although we cannot eliminate the possibility that the species recolonized Alaska from Asia more recently. © 2013 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2014, 111 , 17–37.  相似文献

Salicylic acid content and benzoic acid 2-hydroxylase (BA2H) activity were investigated in tobacco Bel-W3 and Bel-B leaves after exposure to tropospheric ozone in the conditions of ambient air. Plants were exposed in accordance with a standard methodology for ozone biomonitoring, in a three-year experiment. Free salicylic acid (SA), conjugated with glucose (SAG), and as a product of the BA2H activity was quantified with HPLC. In order to evaluate ozone injuries of leaves, an open source image analysis software was employed. Plants exposure to ambient ozone resulted in enhanced BA2H activity and intensified salicylic acid biosynthesis in leaves of Bel-W3 cultivar showing visible ozone injuries. The BA2H activity significantly correlated with SAG for ozone-exposed Bel-W3 plants. Both injuries and salicylic acid biosynthesis rate depended on the growth phase of leaves and nearly linear correlation between SA content and injuries was found for particular leaves of Bel-W3.  相似文献
