The choice of the best species to cultivate in semi-arid and arid climates is of fundamental importance, and is determined by many factors, including temperature and rainfall, soil type, water availability for irrigation and crop purposes. Soil or water salinity represents one of the major causes of crop stress. Species of the genus Atriplex are characterized by high biomass productivity, high tolerance to drought and salinity, and high efficiency in use of solar radiation and water. Based on a search of the international literature, the authors outline an agro-climatic zoning model to determine potential production areas in Argentina for Atriplex halimus and Atriplex numularia. Using the agroclimatic limits presented in this work, this model may be applied to any part of the world. When superimposed on the saline areas map, the agroclimatic map shows the suitability of agro-ecological zoning for both species for energy purposes on land unsuitable for food production. This innovative study was based on the implementation of a geographic information system that can be updated by further incorporation of complementary information, with consequent improvement of the original database.  相似文献

The important role of the CD8+ T-cell response on HIV control is well established. Moreover, the acute phase of infection represents a proper scenario to delineate the antiviral cellular functions that best correlate with control. Here, multiple functional aspects (specificity, ex vivo viral inhibitory activity [VIA] and polyfunctionality) of the HIV-specific CD8+ T-cell subset arising early after infection, and their association with disease progression markers, were examined. Blood samples from 44 subjects recruited within 6 months from infection (primary HIV infection [PHI] group), 16 chronically infected subjects, 11 elite controllers (EC), and 10 healthy donors were obtained. Results indicated that, although Nef dominated the anti-HIV response during acute/early infection, a higher proportion of early anti-Gag T cells correlated with delayed progression. Polyfunctional HIV-specific CD8+ T cells were detected at early time points but did not associate with virus control. Conversely, higher CD4+ T-cell set points were observed in PHI subjects with higher HIV-specific CD8+ T-cell VIA at baseline. Importantly, VIA levels correlated with the magnitude of the anti-Gag cellular response. The advantage of Gag-specific cells may result from their enhanced ability to mediate lysis of infected cells (evidenced by a higher capacity to degranulate and to mediate VIA) and to simultaneously produce IFN-γ. Finally, Gag immunodominance was associated with elevated plasma levels of interleukin 2 (IL-2) and macrophage inflammatory protein 1β (MIP-1β). All together, this study underscores the importance of CD8+ T-cell specificity in the improved control of disease progression, which was related to the capacity of Gag-specific cells to mediate both lytic and nonlytic antiviral mechanisms at early time points postinfection.  相似文献

Introgressive hybridization between Micropterus dolomieu and Micropterus salmoides was assessed in their invaded South African range using nine microsatellite markers and two mtDNA gene regions. Although M. dolomieu and M. salmoides are distantly related, indicated by the large uncorrected pairwise distances observed between the two species, mitochondrial introgression and unidirectional admixture was detected.  相似文献

Tetraploid (2n = 4x = 40) races of Paspalum notatum Flüggé are important natural forage grasses for the tropical and subtropical areas of the Americas. Almost all natural accessions reproduce by obligate aposporous apomixis. Previous work on the species allowed the identification of several molecular markers completely linked to apospory, one component of apomictic reproduction. Moreover, after a fingerprinting characterization of a germplasm collection, 11 amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) markers exclusive to apomictic accessions were detected. The objectives of this work were (1) to validate the presence of molecular markers linked to apospory in tetraploid races of different geographic origins, (2) to determine if markers specific to apomictic accessions were associated with the mode of reproduction, and (3) to develop single-locus markers of apospory that can be used for marker-assisted selection. Thirteen natural apomictic accessions were analyzed. Moreover, the parental plants Q4188 (non-aposporous) and Q4117 (aposporous) and 44 F1 progenies (36 non-aposporous, 8 aposporous) derived from them were used as a validation population. Nine markers [two random amplification of polymorphic DNA (RAPD) and seven AFLP] 100% linked to apospory in Q4117 were tested. Amplification reactions with the corresponding primers showed that all markers were present in the 13 aposporous (apomictic) accessions, but were absent in the non-aposporous controls. On the other hand, linkage analysis of the 11 AFLP markers specific to the apomictic accessions showed that all of them were linked in coupling to apospory (r = 0.00, LOD 13.245). Based on one AFLP (E36M37c), two sequence characterized amplification region (SCAR) markers (SPNA1 and SPNA2) co-segregating with the trait and present in the 13 apomictic accessions were developed. The presence of markers associated with apospory was conserved among tetraploid accessions of different geographic origins. Moreover, the single-locus markers SPNA1 and SPNA2 could be used for routine marker-assisted selection in hybrid populations segregating for apospory and to facilitate the isolation of apospory-related genes.  相似文献

Emerging diseases caused by both native and exotic pathogens represent a main threat to forest ecosystems worldwide. The two invasive soilborne pathogens Phytophthora cinnamomi and Phytophthora × cambivora are the causal agents of ink disease, which has been threatening Castanea sativa in Europe for several centuries and seems to be re-emerging in recent years. Here, we investigated the distribution, causal agents, and infection dynamics of ink disease in southern Switzerland. A total of 25 outbreaks were identified, 19 with only P. cinnamomi, 5 with only P. × cambivora, and 1 with both species. Dendrochronological analyses showed that the disease emerged in the last 20–30 years. Infected trees either died rapidly within 5–15 years post-infection or showed a prolonged state of general decline until death. Based on a generalized linear model, the local risk of occurrence of ink disease was increased by an S-SE aspect of the chestnut stand, the presence of a pure chestnut stand, management activities, the proximity of roads and buildings, and increasing annual mean temperature and precipitation. The genetic structure of the local P. cinnamomi population suggests independent introductions and local spread of the pathogen.  相似文献

Similar to other plant species, Arabidopsis has a huge repertoire of predicted helicases, including the eIF4AIII factor, a putative component of the exon junction complex related to mRNA biogenesis. In this article, we integrated evolutionary and functional approaches to have a better understanding of eIF4AIII function in plants. Phylogenetic analysis showed that the mRNA biogenesis-related helicase eIF4AIII is the ortholog of the stress-related helicases PDH45 from Pisum sativum and MH1 from Medicago sativa, suggesting evolutionary and probably functional equivalences between mRNA biogenesis and stress-related plant helicases. Molecular and genetic analyses confirmed the relevance of eIF4AIII during abiotic stress adaptation in Arabidopsis. Therefore, in addition to its function in mRNA biogenesis, eIF4AIII can play a role in abiotic stress adaptation.  相似文献

Actin remodeling has emerged as a critical process during synapse development and plasticity. Thus, understanding the regulatory mechanisms controlling actin organization at synapses is exceedingly important. Here, we used the highly plastic Drosophila neuromuscular junction (NMJ) to understand mechanisms of actin remodeling at postsynaptic sites. Previous studies have suggested that the actin‐binding proteins Spectrin and Coracle play a critical role in NMJ development and the anchoring of glutamate receptors most likely through actin regulation. Here, we show that an additional determinant of actin organization at the postsynaptic region is the PDZ protein Baz/Par‐3. Decreasing Baz levels in postsynaptic muscles has dramatic consequences for the size of F‐actin and spectrin domains at the postsynaptic region. In turn, proper localization of Baz at this site depends on both phosphorylation and dephosphorylation events. Baz phosphorylation by its binding partner, atypical protein kinase C (aPKC), is required for normal Baz targeting to the postsynaptic region. However, the retention of Baz at this site depends on its dephosphorylation mediated by the lipid and protein phosphatase PTEN. Misregulation of the phosphorylation state of Baz by genetic alterations in PTEN or aPKC activity has detrimental consequences for postsynaptic F‐actin and spectrin localization, synaptic growth, and receptor localization. Our results provide a novel mechanism of postsynaptic actin regulation through Baz, governed by the antagonistic actions of aPKC and PTEN. Given the conservation of these proteins from worms to mammals, these results are likely to provide new insight into actin organization pathways. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
