Larval nematodes (Ascarops sp., Spirurida, Spirocercidae) in liver granulomata of the western fence lizard, Sceloporus occidentalis (Iguanidae)

Prevalence of larval nematodes (Ascarops sp., Spirurida, Spirocercidae) and associated granulomata are reported from livers of wild populations of the western fence lizard, Sceloporus occidentalis. Granulomata were circumscribed by layers of fibrocytes. The encysted nematode was surrounded by masses of histiocytes, cellular debris and cells with pyknotic nuclei.     

Thermodynamics of isomerization reactions involving sugar phosphates

Thermodynamics of isomerization reactions involving sugar phosphates have been studied using heat-conduction microcalorimetry. For the process glucose 6-phosphate2-(aqueous) = fructose 6-phosphate2- (aqueous), K = 0.285 +/- 0.004, delta Go = 3.11 +/- 0.04 kJ.mol-1, delta Ho = 11.7 +/- 0.2 kJ.mol-1, and delta Cop = 44 +/- 11 J.mol-1.K-1 at 298.15 K. For the process mannose 6-phosphate2- (aqueous) = fructose 6-phosphate2- (aqueous), K = 0.99 +/- 0.05, delta Go = 0.025 +/- 0.13 kJ.mol-1, delta Ho = 8.46 +/- 0.2 kJ.mol-1, and delta Cop = 38 +/- 25 J.mol-1.K-1 at 298.15 K. The standard state is the hypothetical ideal solution of unit molality. An approximate result (-14 +/- 5 kJ.mol-1) was obtained for the enthalpy of isomerization of ribulose 5-phosphate (aqueous) to ribose 5-phosphate (aqueous). The data from the literature on isomerization reactions involving sugar phosphates have been summarized, adjusted to a common reference state, and examined for trends and relationships to each other and to other thermodynamic measurements. Estimates are made for thermochemical parameters to predict the state of equilibrium of the several isomerizations considered herein.     

Does a monospecific hybridoma always secrete homogeneous immunoglobulins?

The fusion of splenocytes (from mice immunized with the beta 2 subunit of E. coli tryptophan synthase) with myeloma cells which do not produce immunoglobulins gave rise to a clone secreting immunoglobulins with two distinct isotypes : gamma 1 and gamma 2b (Djavadi-Ohaniance et al. (1984) Biochemistry, 23, 97-104). Analysis of the immunoglobulins secreted by this clone indicates that these two isotypes are carried by two distinct heavy chains which are able to randomly associate to form hybrid molecules. In addition, two classes of light chains are able to randomly and to form heterologous associations with both the gamma 1 and gamma 2b heavy chains. Only the association between the gamma 2b heavy chains with one of the two classes of light chains leads to a combining site specific for the binding of the antigen beta 2.     

A role of oxidative DNA sugar damage in mutagenesis by neocarzinostatin and bleomycin

The anti-tumor antibiotics neocarzinostatin and bleomycin specifically oxidize deoxyribose in DNA at the C-5' and C-4' positions, respectively. The resulting DNA lesions include strand breaks and apyrimidinic sites. Both agents are broad specificity mutagens, inducing, in various systems, base substitutions, frameshifts and deletions. Sequencing studies in bacterial systems have suggested that the base substitutions may result primarily from replicative bypass of the oxidized apyrimidinic sites.
