Throughout vertebrate evolution, asymmetries in the ability to inflict costs on others (i.e., formidability) have determined the outcomes of contests over limited resources. Therefore, natural selection would have favored mechanisms designed to efficiently and accurately estimate the formidability of conspecifics. Although previous research has provided evidence for the existence of adaptations for formidability assessment, the design features of these mechanisms have not been fully examined. In the current study, participants underwent a battery of tasks to test hypotheses regarding the speed and automaticity of formidability assessment mechanisms. Results suggest that formidability is automatically and rapidly tracked and assessed from visual cues. With a few interesting exceptions, characteristics of the raters (N = 187) and targets (N = 64) did not influence these assessments. Additionally, we present eye–tracking data to highlight the salience of upper–body musculature as a cue to physical strength. Taken together, these findings bolster and extend evidence for formidability assessment mechanisms in humans.  相似文献

Site-specific mutations in the quinone binding sites of the photosynthetic reaction center (RC) protein complexes of Rhodobacter (R.) capsulatus caused pronounced effects on sequential electron transfer. Conserved residues that break the twofold symmetry in this region of the RC – M246Ala and M247Ala in the QA binding pocket, and L212Glu and L213Asp in the QB binding pocket – were targeted. We constructed a QB-site mutant, L212Glu-L213Asp Ala-Ala, and a QA-site mutant, M246Ala–M247Ala Glu-Asp, to partially balance the differences in charge distribution normally found between the two quinone binding sites. In addition, two photocompetent revertants were isolated from the photosynthetically-incompetent M246Glu-M247Asp mutant: M246Ala–M247Asp and M246Gly–M247Asp. Sequential electron transfer was investigated by continuous light excitation and time-resolved electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and time-resolved optical techniques. Several lines of EPR evidence suggested that the forward electron transfer rate to QA, kQ, was slowed in those strains containing altered QA sites. The slower rates of secondary electron transfer were confirmed by time-resolved optical results with the M246Glu-M247Asp mutations in the QA site resulting in a dramatically lowered secondary electron transfer efficiency [kQ < (2 ns)-1] in comparison with either the native R. capsulatus RC or the QB site mutant [kQ (200 ps)-1]. Secondary electron transfer in the two revertants was intermediate between that of the native RC and the QA mutant. The P+ QA- PQA charge recombination rates were also changed in the strains that carried altered QA sites. We show that local mutations in the QA site, presumably through local electrostatic changes, significantly alter binding and electron transfer properties of QA.  相似文献

The HTLV-I integrase N-terminal domain [50-residue peptide (IN50)], and a 35-residue truncated peptide formed by residues 9-43 (IN35) have been synthesized by solid-phase peptide synthesis. Formation of the 50-residue zinc finger type structure through a HHCC motif has been proved by UV-visible absorption spectroscopy. Its stability was demonstrated by an original method using RP-HPLC. Similar experiments performed on the 35-residue peptide showed that the truncation does not prevent zinc complex formation but rather that it significantly influences its stability. As evidenced by CD spectroscopy, the 50-residue zinc finger is unordered in aqueous solution but adopts a partially helical conformation when trifluoroethanol is added. These results are in agreement with our secondary structure predictions and demonstrate that the HTLV-I integrase N-terminal domain is likely to be composed of an helical region (residues 28-42) and a beta-strand (residues 20-23), associated with a HHCC zinc-binding motif. Size-exclusion chromatography showed that the structured zinc finger dimerizes through the helical region.  相似文献

BackgroundPeriacetabular osteotomy (PAO) is a common treatment for pre-arthritic hip dysplasia in young adults. The purpose of this study was to better understand changes in muscle volume and composition after PAO visualized using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).MethodsA prospectively collected series of individuals that underwent PAO for hip dysplasia were reviewed to identify subjects with pre- and postoperative MRI. In our practice, MRI was obtained preoperatively and greater than 6 months after PAO for persistent hip pain. MRI sequences were selected to optimize visualization of the muscle volume, fatty infiltration, and hip joint cartilage. MRI images were selected at predetermined bony landmarks and analyzed using 3D Slicer (©2021, www.slicer.org) software to measure muscle diameter and calculate muscle cross-sectional area (CSA) in 17 individual muscles surrounding the hip. Muscle atrophy was graded using the Goutallier classification for fatty infiltration and acetabular cartilage condition was graded using the Outerbridge classification. We compared pre- and postoperative muscle area and composition as well as cartilage for each case.ResultsA series of six female patients met our inclusion criteria. Mean age was 26 years at time of surgery. All cases had MRI sequences adequate for muscle volume measurements. Fatty infiltration and cartilage changes were recorded in four subjects with appropriate MRI sequences. Separating muscle groups, external rotators underwent the largest volume increase. Hip flexors demonstrated mild volume decrease. CSA change among external rotators averaged +12%, hip flexors -9.3%, and hip abductors -9.2% after PAO. All muscles had either the same or increased fatty infiltration after surgery, with gluteus medius and iliacus undergoing the most average increase. Similarly, cartilage condition worsened by a small margin in this series.ConclusionOur results provide preliminary indication that PAO may have noticeable effects on muscle characteristics and cartilage in the early postoperative period. It is reported that preexercise hyperhydration caused arterial O(2) tension of horses performing submaximal exercise to decrease further by 15 Torr (Sosa-Leon L, Hodgson DR, Evans DL, Ray SP, Carlson GP, and Rose RJ. Equine Vet J Suppl 34: 425-429, 2002). Because hydration status is important to optimal athletic performance and thermoregulation during exercise, the present study examined whether preexercise induction of hypervolemia would similarly accentuate the arterial hypoxemia in Thoroughbreds performing short-term high-intensity exercise. Two sets of experiments (namely, control and hypervolemia studies) were carried out on seven healthy, exercise-trained Thoroughbred horses in random order, 7 days apart. In resting horses, an 18.0 +/- 1.8% increase in plasma volume was induced with NaCl (0.30-0.45 g/kg dissolved in 1,500 ml H(2)O) administered via a nasogastric tube, 285-290 min preexercise. Blood-gas and pH measurements as well as concentrations of plasma protein, hemoglobin, and blood lactate were determined at rest and during incremental exercise leading to maximal exertion (14 m/s on a 3.5% uphill grade) that induced pulmonary hemorrhage in all horses in both treatments. In both treatments, significant arterial hypoxemia, desaturation of hemoglobin, hypercapnia, acidosis, and hyperthermia developed during maximal exercise, but statistically significant differences between treatments were not found. Thus preexercise 18% expansion of plasma volume failed to significantly affect the development and/or severity of arterial hypoxemia in Thoroughbreds performing maximal exercise. Although blood lactate concentration and arterial pH were unaffected, hemodilution caused in this manner resulted in a significant (P < 0.01) attenuation of the exercise-induced expansion of the arterial-to-mixed venous blood O(2) content gradient.  相似文献
