Female mate choice is responsible for the evolution of male secondary sexual ornaments. If male ornamental traits reflect indirect, genetic benefits and/or direct, material benefits to females, choosy females may benefit from their choice, indirectly and/or directly. We examined a breeding population of Japanese barn swallows Hirundo rustica gutturalis to determine whether male tail streamer length reflected indirect and/or direct benefits to females. There was no significant positive relationship between male streamer length and the number of extra-pair young (EPY) sired, suggesting that male tail streamers are not a signal of indirect benefits (i.e. good genes theory). In addition, we found no evidence that males with longer streamers fed their offspring more frequently or sired more within-pair young (WPY). The result indicates that male streamer length probably does not act as a signal of direct benefits. Our finding that the length of tail streamers in Japanese barn swallows plays no role in sexual selection is not consistent with studies on European subspecies, but is consistent with studies on North American subspecies where sexual selection on tail streamer is weak. The present study supports the recent suggestion that the pattern of sexual selection on tail streamer length in barn swallows varies geographically. Instead of tail length, males in better condition sired more EPY and WPY. Males in better condition, however, did not feed their nestling more frequently. These results indicate that females gain indirect benefits but not direct benefits, in terms of feeding of young, on choosing social mates. 相似文献

Leukotriene (LT) C(4) and its metabolites, LTD(4) and LTE(4), are involved in the pathobiology of bronchial asthma. LTC(4) synthase is the nuclear membrane-embedded enzyme responsible for LTC(4) biosynthesis, catalyzing the conjugation of two substrates that have considerably different water solubility; that amphipathic LTA(4) as a derivative of arachidonic acid and a water-soluble glutathione (GSH). A previous crystal structure revealed important details of GSH binding and implied a GSH activating function for Arg-104. In addition, Arg-31 was also proposed to participate in the catalysis based on the putative LTA(4) binding model. In this study enzymatic assay with mutant enzymes demonstrates that Arg-104 is required for the binding and activation of GSH and that Arg-31 is needed for catalysis probably by activating the epoxide group of LTA(4). 相似文献

Summary Using the monotone dependence function (mdf) together with correlation coefficient it was found that the Ma-DNA content as well as total protein content are regularly, linearly, positively and strongly dependent in sister cells (proter-opisthe) ofChilodonella steini. Additionally it was shown that proter-opisthe ordering is irrelevant to Ma-DNA and protein contents.Analysis of sister cell generation times (TG) confirmed the existence of regular, linear, positive and strong codependence.The relations between Ma-DNA and total protein contents, between protein content and TG, and between Ma-DNA content and TG were also described. There is a weak, linear dependence between Ma-DNA and total protein contents. Relations of TG and Ma-DNA content or TG and total protein content are non-linear and not even monotone. Evaluating the quality of wildlife habitat is essential for understanding and predicting population dynamics in heterogeneous
environments. We used fecal nitrogen levels as an indicator of habitat quality of sika deer (Cervus nippon) and explored important landscape elements influencing nitrogen levels, taking deer density into account. We established
92 plots differing in deer density and landscape structure on the Boso Peninsula, central Japan, and collected fecal samples
along a 1-km transect at each plot. The regression models involving two independent variables, i.e., deer density and the
length of forest edge within an area of 100 or 200 m from the transect, were selected based on the Akaike’s Information Criterion
(AIC). Levels of fecal nitrogen were positively correlated with the length of the forest edge and negatively correlated with
population density of deer. The area of 100 or 200 m from the transect most likely reflected the behavioral scale of the deer.
Coverage of palatable understory vegetation increased with proximity to forest edge and decreased with deer density. Variability
in the level of fecal nitrogen could thus be explained by food availability in the landscape. These results suggest that landscape
alterations increase the carrying capacity of sika deer and thereby increase impacts upon the ecosystem. 相似文献

The aminoacid composition of protein stained bands in polyacrylamide gels, after electrophoresis of proteins from inner mitochondrial membranes, was investigated hydrolyzing directly the gel slices. The Hydrophobicity Index of 18 prominent polypeptide bands was calculated after their aminoacid analysis. Sphingomyelin hydrolysis by sphingomyelinase is essential in regulating membrane levels of ceramide, a well-known metabolic signal. Since natural sphingomyelins have a gel-to-fluid transition temperature in the range of the physiological temperatures of mammals and birds, it is important to understand the influence of the physical state of the lipid on the enzyme activity. With that aim, large unilamellar vesicles consisting of pure egg sphingomyelin (gel-to-fluid crystalline transition temperature ca. 39 degrees C) were treated with sphingomyelinase in the temperature range 10-70 degrees C. The vesicles were also examined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Shingomyelinase was active on pure sphingomyelin bilayers, leading to concomitant lipid hydrolysis, vesicle aggregation, and leakage of aqueous liposomal contents. Enzyme activity was found to be much higher when the substrate was in the fluid than when it was in the gel state. Sphingomyelinase activity was found to exhibit lag times, followed by bursts of activity. Lag times decreased markedly when the substrate went from the gel to the fluid state. When egg phosphatidylcholine, or egg phosphatidylethanolamine were included in the bilayer composition together with sphingomyelin, sphingomyelinase activity at 37 degrees C, that was negligible for the pure sphingolipid bilayers, was seen to increase with the proportion of glycerophospholipid, while the latency times became progressively shorter. A DSC study of the mixed-lipid vesicles revealed that both phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidyletanolamine decreased in a dose-dependent way the transition temperature of sphingomyelin. Thus, as those glycerophospholipids were added to the membrane composition, the proportion of sphingomyelin in the fluid state at 37 degrees C increased accordingly, in this way becoming amenable to rapid hydrolysis by the enzyme. Thus sphingomyelinase requires the substrate in bilayer form to be in the fluid state, irrespective of whether this is achieved through a thermotropic transition or by modulating bilayer composition. 相似文献

Soil contamination with heavy metals is a widespread problem, especially prominent on grounds lying in the vicinity of mines, smelters, and other industrial facilities. Many such areas are located in Southern Poland; they are polluted mainly with Pb, Zn, Cd, or Cu, and locally also with Cr. As for now, little is known about most bacterial species thriving in such soils and even less about a core bacterial community—a set of taxa common to polluted soils. Therefore, we wanted to answer the question if such a set could be found in samples differing physicochemically and phytosociologically. To answer the question, we analyzed bacterial communities in three soil samples contaminated with Pb and Zn and two contaminated with Cr and lower levels of Pb and Zn. The communities were assessed with 16S rRNA gene fragments pyrosequencing. It was found that the samples differed significantly and Zn decreased both diversity and species richness at species and family levels, while plant species richness did not correlate with bacterial diversity. In spite of the differences between the samples, they shared many operational taxonomic units (OTUs) and it was possible to delineate the core microbiome of our sample set. The core set of OTUs comprised members of such taxa as Sphingomonas, Candidatus Solibacter, or Flexibacter showing that particular genera might be shared among sites ~40 km distant. 相似文献
