This study tested the hypothesis that small birds at their nest sites avoid areas around dens of the red fox (Vulpes vulpes, Linneaus 1758) in an intensively used farmland. Birds were counted at 18 points (radius 100m) located near dens, as well as at 18 control points that were located at least 600m away from the nearest den. These two types of points did not differ with respect to the number of recorded bird species. However, a negative effect of the proximity of fox dens on the total density of the bird community was observed. This effect was also recorded for the most abundant bird species, the skylark (Alauda arvensis, Linneaus 1758). In agreement with our expectations, these results indicate a negative impact of fox presence on a breeding bird community in an open farmland.  相似文献

Five annonaceous acetogenins, rolliniastatin-1 [structure: see text], rolliniastatin-2 [structure: see text], laherradurin [structure: see text], squamocin [structure: see text], annonacin [structure: see text], and rotenone as a reference, differing in their NADH oxidase inhibition activity, have been evaluated for antifeedant, insecticidal, trypanocidal and cytotoxic effects on insect, mammalian and tumor cells. All the test compounds were toxic to Leptinotarsa decemlineata, demonstrated selective cytotoxicity to insect Sf9 cells and a panel of tumor cell lines with the multidrug-resistant SW480 (P-glycoprotein+, Pgp+) being the most sensitive one. Compounds [structure: see text] and rotenone had post-ingestive effects against Spodoptera littoralis larvae while [structure: see text] and rotenone were active against Trypanosoma cruzi. Based on their biochemical properties (inhibition of the mitochondrial NADH oxidase activity), the in vivo effects of these compounds on S. littoralis and their cytotoxic effects on Sf9 and tumor cells were more predictable than their effect on T. cruzi and mammalian cells.  相似文献

The aerial parts of Centaurea deusta Ten. afforded in addition to several known compounds, mainly sesquiterpene lactones, one new eudesmanolide and one new elemane derivative. Structures of the new compounds were elucidated by spectroscopic methods. The in vitro antifungal and antibacterial activities of the isolated compounds was tested, using the microdilution method. The probable antipyretic, antiinflammatory, analgesic and antioxidant properties of Kageneckia oblonga, Rosaceae, were investigated and the major compounds of its active extracts were isolated. The study comprised the acute toxicity of the extracts of global methanol, hexane, dichloromethane and methanol. The cytotoxicity of global methanol extract was studied in three tumoral cell lines. All the extracts exhibited the pharmacological activities under study. Methanol and dichloromethane were the most toxic extracts. From the global methanol extract, isolations were performed of prunasin, 23,24- dihydro-cucurbitacin F, and a new cucurbitacin, 3beta-(beta-D-glucosyloxy)-16alpha,23alpha-epoxycucurbita-5,24-diene-11-one. The cytotoxicity of both cucurbitacins on human neutrophils at the assayed concentrations was not statistically significant. In-vitro assays showed that both cucurbitacins can be partly responsible for the analgesic, antipyretic, and anti-inflammatory activities. Evaluation was done of the cytotoxicity of global methanol extract, 23, 24-dihydrocucurbitacin F, aqueous extracts and prunasin against P-388 murine leukaemia, A-549 human lung carcinoma and HT-29 colon carcinoma. Since global methanol extract presented a strong cytotoxicity against P-388 murine leukaemia, A-549 human lung carcinoma, and HT-29 cell lines, it is highly probable that this extract contain one or more cytotoxic compounds that could be investigated for their potential use as an agent against cancer.  相似文献

Deletion of the spermidine synthase gene in the fungus Aspergillus nidulans results in a strain, deltaspdA, which requires spermidine for growth and accumulates putrescine as the sole polyamine. Vegetative growth but not sporulation or sterigmatocystin production is observed when deltaspdA is grown on media supplemented with 0.05-0.10 mM exogenous spermidine. Supplementation of deltaspdA with >/= 0.10 mM spermidine restores sterigmatocystin production and >/= 0.50 mM spermidine produces a phenotype with denser asexual spore production and decreased radial hyphal growth compared with the wild type. DeltaspdA spores germinate in unsupplemented media but germ tube growth ceases after 8 h upon which time the spores swell to approximately three times their normal diameter. Hyphal growth is resumed upon addition of 1.0 mM spermidine. Suppression of a G protein signalling pathway could not force asexual sporulation and sterigmatocystin production in deltaspdA strains grown in media lacking spermidine but could force both processes in deltaspdA strains supplemented with 0.05 mM spermidine. These results show that increasing levels of spermidine are required for the transitions from (i) germ tube to hyphal growth and (ii) hyphal growth to tissue differentiation and secondary metabolism. Suppression of G protein signalling can over-ride the spermidine requirement for the latter but not the former transition.  相似文献

This study investigated the effectiveness of vegetated buffer strips for removing contaminants in runoff from grassed plots (slope 15%) after application of cattle slurry. Plots (8 x 8 m2 or 8 x 3 m2) received slurry or inorganic fertilizer, and then simulated rainfall (1, 7 and 21 days after slurry/fertilizer application); after each event, runoff and percolates were sampled at various distances downslope (2, 4, 6, and 8 m), and analysed for Cl-, Na+, K+ and faecal bacteria contents. Contaminant concentrations were markedly higher in runoff from the slurry-amended plots than in runoff from the fertiliser-amended plots. After the first rainfall event, some contaminant concentrations in runoff from the slurry-amended plots declined with distance downslope (i.e. with buffer strip width), supporting the relative efficacy of the strip for retaining pollutants. After the second and third rainfall events, by contrast, our results suggest remobilisation of contaminants retained during the first event. Faecal bacteria levels (especially streptococcus levels) remained high throughout the study, even in percolates and runoff collected 8 m downslope after the third rainfall event, and indeed even downslope of the adjacent fertilizer-amended plots (indicating lateral movement): this suggests that bacterial contamination may be the most significant risk arising from slurry application.  相似文献
